Today our members had a choice to make! Whether to join in a Creative Writing Workshop or to join members having a social afternoon working on crafts etc. Both groups had an excellent afternoon with plenty of laughter ringing out from the two separate rooms. 13 October 2017 - WI Walk
Angela was the leader on our walk from her home at Holmesfield down to Barlow for lunch and back on a delightful circular route. 11 October 2017 - WI Monthly Meeting
Baslow WI's October meeting was an extremely lively meeting. We welcomed four visitors and a new member and who should turn up unannounced - our Federation Chairman, Chrissie! The sales table had a Halloween theme, would we ever dare to eat those 'Freaky Fingers'? Mick Hanks from Derbyshire Blood Bikes was an excellent speaker talking with no notes and no props so easily about his volunteering. We asked plenty of questions, it was a huge learning curve for us as most of us didn't know about the charity 'Blood Bikes' and how it saves the NHS so much money every year. We would recommend Mick to other WIs either as a speaker or as a local charity to support. Our Roving Reporter 'Darling Jane' updated us on the progress of the DFWI Centenary Project planting bulbs in our village car park. Not an easy job, the ground is like concrete! Lorna showed her embroidery for the DFWI Centenary Wall Hanging the background was painted by Lesley.

If you have any photos you would like to share with us please contact us via this site or our the Baslow WI Facebook page.

20 January 20177 - WI walk, Totley
Today Baslow WI members bravely ventured over the border into South Yorkshire! One of our Team Members, Judith, led a three mile walk in the Totely area of Sheffield. Members met at The Crown, and very soon met up with Judith's husband, Stuart, who had kindly brought along mulled wine and tempting nibbles for us! Although this was only a short walk it took some time negotiating steep muddy banks and getting Taylor (WI dog) over stiles! The staff at The Crown served up a delicious lunch and everyone went home happy to be part of this Derbyshire WI. Our next get-together will be WISA as usual on the 4th Wednesday of the month, 25 January.

This was Baslow WI's last get-together of the 2016. We met and enjoyed drinks and nibbles in the bus shelter at Baslow Village Hall then moved off slowly but surely following our leader Vikki to the 'Kissing Gate', the nearest entrance to Chatsworth Park. The walk across the park is always beautiful at any time of the year. We called in at Edensor Church and paid our respects at the grave of the 1 Duke & Duchess where earlier this month Judith placed a wreath on behalf of Baslow WI. After this it was time to cross the road to the Cavendish Club for lunch arranged there for us by our Correspondence Secretary, Lorna.

11 December 2016 - What were Baslow members up to this weekend?
Valerie
Valerie and her husband Tony entered a 10 mile time trial in Cheshire riding a Coventry Sociable Tandem circa 1885. They said it was hard work but great fun, the hamper on the back of the bike was filled with mince pies which they shared with people en-route. Valerie hand made their reindeer costumes and they won the fancy dress compeition. Well done to them both! |

27 November 2016 - Baslow Winter Festival
Our WI members had fun at the Baslow WI Winter Festival today selling, trying and buying all sorts of items for Christmas.
The standard of the crafts were amazing and it was lovely to see some young people with great selling skills selling items using Jumping Clay. At our December WI meeting we will be 'having a go' with Jumping Clay ourselves. Wonder how we will get on? |
26 November - Our members are getting ready for the silly season!
25 November 2016 - River Ramble and lunch at Derwentwater Arms
It was a lovely morning to be out and about. The 'River Ramble' took us along the river from Calver to Froggatt stopping for coffee and photos. Fourteen of us ended up at The Derwentwater Arms for drinks and lunch. Sadly the field with the caravans at Calver is badly flooded after heavy rain on Monday.

Thirteen Baslow WI members met up in the Village Hall for their monthly social afternoon. 17 October 2016 - Baslow Bikers & Hassop Ladies Cycling Group
The Monday riders were sad this morning to see their leader, Ruth, from Derbyshire Dales District Council lead her last ride due to funding being cut. Ruth and others before her have been a great inspiration to Baslow Bikers, we would not have started out own bike riding group without this help. The Monday riders are going to continue meeting at 09.30 British Summer Time and 10.00 GMT on Monday mornings under a new name 'Hassop Ladies Cycling Group'. A Facebook page has been opened and we are all in email contact with each other. Thanks DDDC for giving us this opportunity to start cycling and make new friends. We wish Ruth all the best in the future.

15 October 2016 - Apple Day
It's that time of year AGAIN and we were blessed with a mild and mainly dry day for the Community Orchard Apple Day. Our gazebo was out for its second appearance and wowed the crowd! Our members supported us brilliantly by supplying us with all sorts of goodies for sale. We sold £170 worth of stock and were able to donate £50 to the Orchard Group. As you will see from the photos everyone was having a great time. Three WI members won prizes for their Apple recipes judged by Max from Fischer's Baslow Hall. The juice from the apple press was amazing as was the soup made by Malcom. Choirs sung and we had the human fruit machine manned (?) by WI members and friends. What a busy day! The pictures will tell the story...
From our editor early this morning...
14 October 2016 - Fashion Show
12 October 2015 - WI Monthly Meeting
At our October WI meeting our speaker was Carole Beavis, 'Willow weaving'. She gave us a wonderful talk, with slides and brought along some of her sculptures. www.carolebeavis.co.uk
Our members and friends from Old Brampton WI were again so generous with items for the Chesterfield Women's Refuge. We have received lovely letters of thanks.
Our Sunflower growing competition has been a great success. There were three winners, Judith for the tallest stem, Julia for the widest girth of stem and Kate for the biggest flower head. Their prizes were beaded sunflower brooches purchased in support of ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World). Vikki won the booby prize and Mary a special prize for her fabulous knitted sunflower - her real one was apparently a flop!
Jane has succeeded in her application for a grant from DDDC Councillor Sue Hobson and we have purchased a notice board for outside the Village Hall. Well done and thank you Jane and Sue. This is what Jane has to say about it...

Not noticed our Notices?
That's all about to change! Thanks to our local Councillor Sue Hobson and Derbyshire Dales District Council we've got a new notice board. Sophisticated silver frame with Baslow W.I. in contrasting black lettering, soon to be fixed, courtesy of Baslow Village Hall Committee, on the wall overlooking Baslow Car Park. No missing our news now, Darlings! Jane |
10 October 2016 - Baslow Bikers
6 October 2016 - WI Walk
Ten Baslow Walkers met at the start of the Adder Track on the Sheffield to Baslow road for the short walk to the reservoir and back along the heather path. Jane, our Roving Reporter, gave us a wonderful talk on the way telling us about the history and geography of the area. We had a short coffee stop in the sunshine out of the wind before returning to the cars. There was a warm welcome for us at the Peacock, Owler Bar and we enjoyed a very welcome drink before lunch sitting in the warm sunny restaurant.
|
Note from Jane our Roving Reporter: Today Ann took us onto Big Moor, bleak, bare and inhospitable, little did she know that this was the site of Bronze Age settlement and burial, the Spaghetti Junction of the 13th Century, with Guide Stones from the 18th and present day Companion Stones. It's quite a shock to be confronted with such amazing human endeavour and realise our own "insignificance". Jane
4 October 2016 - DFWI Autumn Meeting
Members from Baslow WI with friends from Ashford, Beeley, Chatsworth and Grindleford travelled in a mini bus to the Riverside Centre in Derby for the Federation Meeting. It turned out to be a very lively and informative meeting. In the morning we had Music Therapist Ming Hung Hsu and his colleagues from the Methodist Homes Association leading the singing for over 700 members and the afternoon speaker Rev Kate Bottley was entertaining and great fun.

3 October 2016 - 150th Anniversary Barnardo's lunch at Hassop Hall
Today some of our members attended a fundraising lunch at Hassop Hall celebrating the charity Barnardo's 150th Anniversary. The after lunch speaker was Berlie Doherty a local author who writes books often with historical context and has written one called 'Street Child' about a boy, Jim Jarivs, befriended by Barnardo. Berlie has also written a 'sister' book entitled 'Far from Home' featuring Jim's sisters Emily and Lizzie.
We were thrilled to see Anne Tempest, a Baslow WI member, receive a 150th year Barnardo badge acknowledging her 40 years working for and fundraising with Barnardo's.
