31 October 2019 - It's all about the beer.... & the gin!
Today was the day for Baslow WI's centenary visit to Peak Ales, Bakewell. Members were welcomed by the owner Robert Evans who told them a brief history of how he got into the brewing business with Chatsworth, followed by a mini tour of the property and talk on the beer making process. As well as beer they distill gin at Peak Ales bearing the Chatsworth name. The Baslow Darlings enjoyed either a gin or one of the draft beers along with some fabulous nibbles that Caroline had bought at the Chatsworth Farm shop. An excellent outing, organised by Caroline and Lorna. Let's all buy local - especially when it's as good as this!

30 October 2019 - Scarf making workshop
Jane and Judith made scarves at Denman earlier this year and today they organised a workshop for Baslow WI members in Baslow Village Hall sharing the skill. This was exactly the purpose for which Denman College was purchased by WI members way back in 1947. Thanks to Jane and Judith for all their work running this day school for our members and to Lorna for taking the photos.

17 October 2019 - The Longshaw Walkers
The sunshine meant a good turnout today when thirteen Nordic Walkers joined Phill and Linda at Longshaw Estate for instruction in Nordic Walking. New members are gradually joining the Friday group which is great news. Check the diary dates page of this website each week to see where they are meeting.

16 October 2019 - Bye-bye to the Maynard as we know it 😟
Sixteen Baslow Darlings met at The Maynard Hotel for our Lunch Club yesterday. A very nice lunch, in lovely surroundings with great company. Boy, do those ladies know how to chat! Sadly this was our last meeting at The Maynard as it has been sold and will close at the end of this month. Lots of speculation on who has bought it and what it’s going to become. It was one of our favourite places to meet.

15 October 2019 - RESOLUTIONS 2020
Shortlist of resolutions for the NFWI 2020 Annual Meeting
1. A call to increase potential stem cell donor registration
There is an urgent need to increase the number of people registered on the aligned UK stem cell registry in order to provide potentially life-saving treatment to people of all ages with certain blood cancers. We call on all WI members to promote registration to the database to avoid people dying whilst waiting for a match.
2. Female crash test dummies
Women are significantly more likely to die, or be seriously injured, in car crashes than men. The WI calls on the government to mandate equitable testing with female crash test dummies to that of male dummies in regulatory vehicle safety tests; and for consumer organisations, such as EuroNCAP, to include a gendered breakdown in their published results.
3. End modern slavery
There are tens of thousands of victims of modern slavery hiding in plain sight in the UK. Modern slavery has severe consequences for the health and mental wellbeing of survivors. The NFWI calls on Government to protect victims of modern slavery in the first instance and deliver longer term support to help them rebuild their lives. We call on our members to raise awareness of the prevalence of modern slavery throughout society and to campaign to defeat it.
4. Time to talk about death and dying
64% of people in the UK think that we do not talk enough about death in this country, yet these conversations can be really helpful in enabling people to receive the end of life care they would want. In order to demystify a natural part of life, and support more people to share their wishes, the NFWI calls upon members to encourage open discussions about death and dying.
5. Protect our precious helium
Helium is a precious resource that is widely used in healthcare, medical and scientific research, but it is non-renewable and in short supply. The NFWI calls on WI members to help raise awareness of the need to conserve helium, and on government and industry to work together to ensure it is used responsibly, and to support innovative research that could address the shortage such as reducing use or improving capture and recycling.

14 October 2019 - Alison's walk
What a great start to the week! Fourteen members from Baslow WI and three beautiful black Labradors met at Hassop Station Cafe for a two hour walk along the Monsal trail crossing fields towards Bakewell and Gt Longstone and back to Hassop for a good warming lunch. Thanks to our leader Alison for planning and leading the walk. 👣🐾
13 October 2019 - Fun down on the farm!
12 October 2019 - A day at the Orchard... #AppleDay 🍎
Baslow Darlings had an army of helpers setting up their gazebos for Apple Day, thanks everyone, it's heavy work but worth it! As always it was an enjoyable day working alongside other groups in our community. We had an abundance of items for sale including preserves, cakes, big and little buns in true WI fashion, cards, our own 2020 calendars and jewellery. The big draw as usual was the tea/coffee/hot chocolate all for just 50p! At the end of the day we were able to donate to £50 to the Jubilee Community Orchard Group. Congratulations to Baslow WI member, Mary, whose apple pie was given 2nd place in the competition judged by Max Fischer.

9 October 2019 - Welcome Mig!
Mig Holder adores sewing and recycling and after various teaching jobs she now makes this her work. She was an excellent speaker at our monthly meeting today, enthusiastic and entertaining, the time she was allocated just flew by! Next the Darlings had a 'PowerPoint Shout Out Quiz' led by Caroline all about the WI worldwide and in Baslow. This was another way of celebrating our #Centenary Year, remembering all we've done over the years, this month we concentrated particularly on the years following the millennium. Our table for The Elm Foundation was overflowing, again! Thanks go to everyone who donates and to the kind members who organise and deliver the donations to Chesterfield each month. We are looking forward to the draw for the 'Pick a Date Raffle' in December, some of the prizes were on display today. Funds raised will go to our President's Charity - Baslow Village Hall, the home of Baslow WI since 1919!
6 October 2019 - Let's Go Peak District
Baslow WI's 2nd blog is now published on the Let's Go Peak District website. Take a peep we've been looking back as well as forward in 2019, our centenary year! Thanks to Phil Sproson, Peak District Photographer & Co Founder of Let's Go Peak District for his encouragement and support.

25 September 2019 - Crafty Darlings get busy at WISA & some just chat. Either is ok!
Baslow members met in the Village Hall today for their monthly WISA (WI Social Afternoon). Sitting around a large, long table they worked together planning the social time for the October meeting others were knitting and chatting and others were getting on with their craft work. Its a great time to get-together away from the busy monthly WI meetings. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. Tea and coffee are available and if we're lucky cake, but none today, all slimming before the WI 100th birthday and Christmas celebrations start. Whoops sorry did I mention the 'Christmas' word three months early!
24 September 2019 - Now where's he gone? 🐻
It's official, Baslow Bear has escaped to Denman yet again! This time he is on a sauce for pasta course in the fabulous Cookery School at Denman. Look-see he's watching tutor Mariella making a filling for ravioli.

11 September 2019 - A man and his chocolate, what's not to like!
Barry Colenso was our speaker today his talk was entitled 'Chocolate with a passion'! Barry made Prince William's chocolate wedding cake and told us the details of the making and setting up of the cake. It was fascinating to hear what it's like working for the Royals! In the Social Time today members exhibited and told us about craft items made at WI workshops or inspired by the WI. This was an excellent meeting, members purchased some of Barry's chocolate and were pleased to hear that they can purchase more at the Federation Meeting, in Derby on 1 October if they like it!

9 September 2019 - Centenary Swim
TODAY WAS THE DAY for the Darlings to meet for their 'Centenary Swim' at Hathersage Open Air Swimming Pool. We are amazed to report that only seven were brave enough to experience this delight! The water was lovely and warm sadly the air 'poolside' wasn't!

2-9 September - Adventures abroad!
Four Baslow Bikers booked and went off to the Bavarian lakes and mountains on a cycling holiday using ebikes. They enjoyed fabulous weather for the first few days which quickly deteriorated and they ended up soaked at the end of most days! Never mind, they toughed it out and survived. Six Baslow Bikers are booked for another biking holiday in Majorca next year. 'Gluttons for punishment' springs to mind! 🤨
31 August 2019 - Look who's at 'The Grand Hotel'
Buxton Opera House and Derby Theatre were, for the last two weeks, transformed into Berlin in 1928 for the production of 'Grand Hotel'. Darling Jayne was in the cast, doesn't she look gorgeous?
Jayne says... 'it was a very special two weeks, 😓 hard work! We did 12 performances.......
Present Players of Kilburn have been performing for 31 years at Buxton and Derby, we always try to choose and revive the older shows which are no longer performed .... it is an amazing hobby, challenging on a mental and physical level - I love it!'

25 August 2019 - Three firsts for Kate!
In very high temperatures this weekend Kate was victorious winning three 1st prizes in the floral art competitions at Froggatt Show. The flowers all look so beautifully fresh, how does she do it? We are sure Kate would have been wilting by the end of the day though! We have heard that other Baslow WI members were successful with their entries at the show but have no photos of their exhibits.

21 August 2019 - Lorna's challenge
Lorna's challenge is to swim the length of Loch Lomond and more during the next two months at her local pool at Chatsworth. She is swimming to raise funds for Alzheimer's Research UK 'Swimming Down Dementia'. This is a charity close to her heart, dementia has affected members of her family. Lorna is a past President of Baslow WI and now is Vice President, we wish her good luck with her fundraising and hope that individual members and friends will sponsor her.

21 August 2019 - The High Sheriff of Derbyshire's new clothes...
"When I retired 10 years ago, from my job as Head Seamstress at Chatsworth, I thought that my sewing days for the Cavendish family were over.
Imagine my surprise when I received a call last November, asking if I would be willing to take on a sewing task for Lord Burlington.
He had been invited to take up the post of High Sheriff of Derbyshire in April 2019 and he needed to dress the part. His jacket and britches were commissioned from a bespoke tailor in Calver, the buttons were designed and made by David Mellor of Hathersage, and the silver and jet buckles were made by CW Sellers.
To complete the outfit a lace jabot and cuffs were required. When I was first asked about this, I thought that, because I am a lace maker he wanted me to make the lace for these items, a near impossible task in six months.
Luckily a beautiful Youghal lace shawl, which had belonged to the late Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, had been found in here effects. Youghal is a coastal town in Southern Ireland, very near to Lismore Castle, a place that is very dear to Lord Burlington’s heart. It was decided that I should use this shawl to make the Jabot and cuffs. Some might say it was a crime to cut up such a beautiful antique, but Lord Burlington felt it kept him close to his beloved aunt, reminded him of Ireland and was giving the lace a second life, recycling in action.
The shawl was triangular, I needed to make the best use of the beautiful lace edge, so I bought a length of thin cotton fabric and cut it to the shape of the shawl, so that I could experiment before cutting into the lace. Once I was happy with the design, and with my heart in my mouth, I cut out all the pieces I needed. Making it up didn’t take very long at all, and I was able to get it back to him in good time for the official photographs to be taken.
Lord Burlington is almost half way through his year in office now and I know he is enjoying it immensely, meeting lots of people in the county and supporting many local charities and causes.
I am really proud to have had a small part to play in this story, and to still be a useful part of the greater Chatsworth family."

20 August 2019 - It just takes two!
Two Darlings ventured out with Izzy leaving Longshaw and walking along the Houndkirk Track and back along the Burbage Track. Amazing views surrounded them on all six miles of the walk, they were slowed down by the wet peat paths along some of the tracks. They had a young cyclist keeping them amused and entertained on the walk, a delightful young man!
17 August 2019 - Stunning scenery on a Saturday in summer.
Today we saw an amazing turn-around in the weather here in Derbyshire. The sun shone and our walkers met with Izzy (British Nordic Walking Instructor) for an 8 mile Nordic Walk in this wonderful part of the Peak District. Longshaw, Padley Gorge, Hathersage, Surprise Corner, Millstone Edge, and back too Longshaw. A great walk including a picnic lunch and a hot drink at David Mellor Cutlery Factory.
16 August 2019 - Mad or just enthusiastic?
Julia & Sandra were the only two walkers brave and hardy enough to join Phill for his Nordic Walking instruction session at Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield today. They worked on improving their techniques for tackling steps, slippery hills and uneven ground. Eventually they gave in to the torrential rain and ended up in the cafe for steaming tea/coffee. ☕️

15 August 2019 - Celebrating 100 years!
First job, choosing from the menu! Twenty three Baslow WI members and partners, amazed by the slot of good weather, met at The Grouse Inn, Grindleford at 5.30pm today for a Centenary Evening Walk. This was a three mile circular walk on the Longshaw Estate with fabulous views over the Peak District National Park. They arrived back at The Grouse as planned at 7pm for a supper of traditional Derbyshire pub grub, fabulous cod & chips, pie & peas and enormous jacket potatoes! The Centenary Committee at Baslow WI had walked and planned this evening a year ago and were very pleased at the turnout. Let's do it again - no need to wait 100 years!

6 August 2019 - Stunning views & tricky stiles
More Baslow WI members are now enjoying walking with the Derbyshire Group of Nordic Walkers. Today three of them, Ann, Sandra and Sue joined Linda's walk from Holmesfield. This was a 5¼ mile walk (13,000 steps) on hilly terrain with some wonderfully built stiles and gates to negotiate. Nordic Walking poles assist greatly on the hills, rocky and muddy sections as well as on the flat. The Darlings enjoyed the walk but say, '... we aren't nearly as fit as 'Izzy's Group' but we'll get there'!
5 August 2019 - Baslow Bikers find cycle routes around the Crooked Spire
Four of the Baslow Bikers got together today and Liz led a 19 mile circular ride from Poolsbrook Country Park, via Tupton to Holmebrook Valley Country Park for a picnic lunch and back to Poolsbrook along the Chesterfield Canal. This is lovely cycle route, nearly all off road. It was great to see so many families out walking, cycling and enjoying the holiday season. 😎

29 July 2019 - Baslow Bikers find it hot on the Trail
Six of the Baslow Bikers met today at Parsley Hay and enjoyed a 30 mile round trip using the High Peak Trail and passing through Hopton, Carsington and Bradbourne with a picnic lunch at Tissington then back up the Tissington Trail to Parsley Hay. This was a great day out in lovely summer weather. Intrigued to know why it was a 'Doubly Thankful Village' they found that the Bradbourne villagers were grateful for the safe return of all local men who fought in the World Wars 1 and 2. A plaque now has pride of place at the heart of the village. There are thought to be around 15 'Doubly thankful villages' in England and Bradbourne is the only one in Derbyshire.

22 July 2019 - Walk from Rowthorne
Ten friends from Baslow WI met at Rowthorne car park for a walk to Ault Hucknall to visit the church and well dressings. This was a lovely peaceful walk skirting around Hardwick. After returning to the cars they drove to Heath for a very good lunch at The Elm Tree and then enjoyed a stroll around the village enjoying the wonderful displays in the church. At the moment the village is decorated with scarecrows with a 'science' theme and all the houses and gardens had been especially tidied for the well dressing week. The Darlings ended up at Heath Village Hall enjoying tea and home made cakes served by the locals before heading off home. An excellent summer day out thanks very much to Muriel for organising this and being our leader.

17 July 2019 - Centenary Celebration Tea on the Steam Train, Rowsley to Matlock
This celebration tea was in place of our usual Lunch Club Meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Members met at Rowsley Station and boarded the train to Matlock via Darley Dale. They enjoyed mountains of delicious sandwiches, cake and scones with gallons of tea or coffee! They were extremely well looked after by the train's catering staff and enjoyed the chat and scenery along the way. Quite a different aspect in comparison with the usual view from the A6! Our thanks go to Kate for organising this centenary outing and to Andrew for the detailed information on the two locomotives.
Locomotive No. 72 was built by the Vulcan Foundry of Newton-le-Willows in 1945 as an order of 50 for the War Department which were often called ‘Austerity’ Locomotives. It was originally numbered WD5419 but was subsequently numbered 72 when owned by the National Coal Board and given its present number. It is classified as a 0-6-0ST the ‘ST’ refers to the locomotive having a saddle tank for water sitting over the top of the boiler. Andrew Treves
Locomotive No D9 ‘Pennyghent’ is one of 10 Type 4 diesel locomotives built by British Railways' Derby Works between 1959 and 1960. The early members of the class were named after British mountains, and consequently this locomote type was nicknamed Peaks. British Rail subsequently reclassified the locomotives as Type 44. It is powered by a 2300 Horsepower diesel engine and weights 133 tons. Subsequently a further 183 locomotives were built which had an increased power of 2500 HP. Again it is classified as a 1Co-Co1 as each bogie has one undriven axle and three independently driven ones. When introduced they were the express locomotives of their day taking over from the steam locomotives in the early 1960s but they were also suitable for heavy goods trains as well. Andrew Treves
16 July 2019 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire
British Nordic Walking Instructor, Izzy, led a 4½ mile circular walk from Holmesfield via Millthorpe & Horsleygate this morning. After the two hour walk the group cooled down with some stretching exercises before having a coffee at The Angel. These Tuesday walks are really excellent thanks to Izzy, Linda and friends for making us from Baslow WI so welcome. We look forward to spending much more time out and about enjoying the walking, talking and fabulous Derbyshire scenery. Today we had the bonus of two well dressings to admire.

Liz was our ride leader today from Poolsbrook Country Park to Rother Valley Country Park for a picnic lunch. The ride was 16 miles, an easy cycle with only a few hills to negotiate. Liz & Paul cycled from their home so did more miles than the rest of us! After they left us to head home we added a small diversion to check out the improvements on the Chesterfield Canal at Staveley. The paths are all in good order and well used during the warm dry weather.

2 May 2019 - Baslow Bookworms
“Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine”
Author: Gail Honeyman An outstanding debut novel about loneliness, and an unusual, thought-provoking, quirky heroine. Members found the book hard going at first but soon grew to love Eleanor and her socially inept carefully timetabled existence. Lots of discussion on what made Eleanor the way she is. Sad, thought-provoking a tale of a survivor who tackles the challenges of emotional reconnection with courage and occasional humour for the reader. Score 8.5/10 Sue Dootson - Bookworms Book Club Leader |

Very cold windy weather didn't stop our Nordic Walkers meeting at Longshaw this week for their instruction session with Phill. By this photo it looks as though they were warming up nicely and enjoying their teas and coffees in the National Trust Cafe at the end of their lesson. Baslow WI members and friends have been Nordic Walking every Friday for over a year now, it's always a good way to start the weekend.

Book Club Choice One Little Mistake by Emma Curtis:
Proving that one little mistake can turn your life upside down and change forever. Two young mums' who become friends but one hides a dark past. A dark debut novel by Emma Curtis makes the reader uneasy, provokes reactions and emotions and keeps you reading to the end. Members found the characters difficult to connect or empathise with and found the plot predictable. Members wouldn't normally choose a physiological thriller but enjoyed this book and scored 7/10 . 6 February 2019 - Baslow Book Lovers
This month (February) we met at Angela Swindells' home to discuss "The Queen of Bloody Everything" by Joanna Nadin.
It divided opinion, Caroline, Carol and June felt that the book was touched with a little sadness, a dash of hope and humour. It covers the complicated area of family relationships which they could relate to. There were moments when Pauline laughed out loud. Gillian felt that it was a book which would attract young adults, whilst Angela and Sandra thought that it lacked depth. We feel as a group that it is much more interesting when we do not agree! Our next meeting is on March 6th at Jacqueline's home and our chosen book is "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles. Report - Caroline Enock Photo - June Oldham |
1 February 2019 - Nordic Walking
SERIOUS NORDIC WALKING! Just five 'brave bunnies' met up with Phill today for our weekly instruction session at National Trust Longshaw on snow and ice. It was a good opportunity to test the usefulness of the poles on slippery ground and how to decide which angle to place the poles to give the most stability. We did a short mindfulness (silent) uphill section but all decided we like the walking and talking best! Our instructor, 'Patient Phill', just goes with the flow! ❆❄️⛄️😂❄️

25 January 2018 - Nordic Walking
Despite horrid wet wintery weather and coughs and colds twelve walkers turned up at the National Trust Longshaw Estate for their weekly session of Nordic Walking with Phill today. They worked on various ways of using the poles to assist walking and exercising on different terrains. Some of the members have been attending these sessions for over a year now and are still enjoying learning and working together each week. Brian from Walton joined the Baslow Nordic Walking Group today new members are always very welcome.

22 January 2019 - WISA (WI Social Afternoon)
SWISA today was well supported by members it was especially good to see some newer members attending. All sorts of crafts were being worked on and some of the Team Members were learning how to work the WI's projector for use at future WI meetings. Our President, Christine, has made two 'carry-all' bags and is planning to run a day school where members will be able to make one for themselves. Jane has finished her rag rug and brought it to show us. Well done everyone see you next time!

21 January 2019 - WI walk
Today twelve Baslow WI members met at Severn Trent, Linacre for a drink before setting off on their walk around the reservoirs. After the steady 5k walk they moved the cars to The Peacock Inn at Cutthorpe and enjoyed a very good lunch served quickly and nicely presented. A very pleasant way to spend a winter morning and they were so lucky with the weather.

18 January 2019 - Nordic Walking
Today the Nordic Walking Group met at Baslow Village hall and walked a 5km route into Chatsworth and back. Sadly our instructor Phill was not able to come with us as he has 'the dreaded flu'. Linda, our British Nordic Walking Leader took control and helped newer walkers with their poling.
17 January 2019 - Making Bakewell Puddings!
This was the first outing in our Centenary Year and Baslow WI members enlisted on the 'Bakewell Pudding Experience' at The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. Judith was our organiser for this event and this is her report...
'On the coldest morning so far in January, 16 Baslow WI ladies chipped the ice off their car windscreens and met up at the Original Bakewell Pudding shop to do what WI ladies do best - a spot of baking !
We were welcomed by Steven , who split us into two groups and and provided us with a plastic apron each. Whilst one group had coffee, the other group trouped down to the kitchen and started cooking. We were given a round of pastry to press into a foil container and were then instructed to pipe in a layer of strawberry jam. We added the layer of mixed butter, eggs and ground almonds and were shown how to level the mixture in the tart case.
We put our efforts on a large baking tray alongside our names so there would be no argument as to whose tart was whose when it came out of the oven.
The two groups changed over at this point, and when the second group reached this stage all the tarts were put in the oven to cook.
We all sat down to our chosen breakfasts whilst the tarts were cooking and then people either sat around talking or went off to do some shopping whilst our tarts cooked and cooled. It was unfortunate that the cooling process took much longer than we anticipated, so we didn’t see everyone’s efforts before they were expertly packed up and named for us by the shop staff, to collect at our own convenience.
It was an entertaining morning , during which we probably didn’t learn anything new , but we did enjoy ourselves and have a pudding to take home and eat at the end.' Judith Barton

14 January 2019 - Baslow Bikers
Just two Baslow Bikers wanted to cycle today so the meeting place was changed to suit them meeting at Poolsbrook Country Park instead of Parsley Hay. They cycled through Tapton Golf Course, around Chesterfield using the well planned cycle route, into Holmebrook Valley Park where they had their picnic lunch in glorious winter sunshine watched by a good selection of waterbirds including seagulls! They continued on their ride returning to Poolsbrook following the Chesterfield Canal towpaths which are very easy to cycle on and interesting. This route is 19½, miles there are some steep parts in the woods but the ground was surprisingly dry for January. Parsley Hay next time when hopefully more Bikers will be out. 🚴♀️
11 January 2019 - Nordic Walking
Fifteen walkers attended the session today and welcomed a new Baslow WI member, Liz. Our British Nordic Walking Instructor, Phill, explained about the 'Virtual Runner Challenges' for Nordic Walkers which some of the Baslow group will be doing on Tuesday next week at Linacre Reservoirs. Nordic Walking is a very sociable way of spending an afternoon out in the open and getting fit at the same time. This group ends their sessions in a cafe whenever possible, sometimes even with cake! Find out more on our Diary Page.
3-10 January - Darling Anna in Oman
One of our WI members Anna and her husband Andy have been off on their travels and spent time in Oman. They have been kind enough to share some of their photos with us. Thanks Darlings! It looks a wonderful winter holiday.
9 January 2019 - WI Monthly Meeting
Today's meeting at Baslow WI was an open meeting, Baslow Village Hall was packed and we were thrilled to welcome twelve visitors and two new members.
Donations for The Elm Foundation (Chesterfield Women's Refuge) were, as always, extremely generous. Our President's Charity in 2018 was Derbyshire Blood Bikes and at today's meeting a cheque for £800 was handed over to a representative from that charity. The speaker today, Martin Greenshields gave us an entertaining and interesting talk about his adventure on the clipper 'Sanya' on two legs of the Round the World Clipper Race supporting Unicef. He surprised us by telling us he had no experience of sailing before this apart from a session at Carsington Water! Since the 'journey' his favourite quote is'Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!' After tea the five members who have formed a WI Centenary sub-committee acted out their interpretation of the committee meeting following the formation of Baslow WI in 1919. It appeared they had great fun doing it and getting their costumes together! Thanks to all who took part, they have certainly raised awareness of the longevity of our WI, let's drink to the next 100 years of the WI in Baslow! 🥂 |
4 January 2019 - Nordic Walking
The Nordic Walking Group met today for their first walk of the year at The National Trust Longshaw and were pleased to welcome a new member, Annie. 'British Nordic Walking Leader', Linda, came along as an assistant to our Instructor, Phill. The group worked hard but as usual with lots of 'chat' along the way. Phill talked about them joining various challenges and gaining medals! They ended up as usual in the National Trust Cafe. ☕️🍰
3 January 2019 - Kiss me Kate at the Crucible Sheffield
Seventeen Baslow WI members enjoyed an afternoon at the Crucible theatre to see 'Kiss me Kate'. The show was written by Samuel and Bella Spewack with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, it is a musical retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, and features the classic songs "Too Darn Hot", "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" and "So In Love". Thanks to Marion one of the Team at Baslow WI who organised the outing for us and purchased the tickets.

21 December 2018 - Christmas Nordic Walk
Our last Nordic Walk of the year took place at Ecclesall Woods where most of our members seemed to forget their baubles and tinsel. Gill won hands down for her decorations and tweeting bird! Things then took a turn as we were joined by a small dog on our circular route, with no sign of his owner by the time we got back to the cafe. We discovered his name is Snowy and both a phone number and address were on his disc. We fastened him to our table with some borrowed string but despite many phone calls and messages, we couldn’t contact his owner. Julia knew his home was only a few minutes drive away and nobly volunteered to drive there whilst we remained with the now rather worried little dog. All ended happily when she returned with his owner and the pair were reunited. WI Dog Rescue triumphs again! Happy Christmas to all from Baslow Nordic Walkers. Report and photos Sandra Jenkins 🎄
19 December 2018 - Baslow WI's Annual Tinsel Walk
Today 33 members of Baslow WI joined their Treasurer, Vikki, for her Annual 'Tinsel Walk' from Baslow Village Hall into Chatsworth for lunch at the Cavendish Club, Edensor, and to deliver a wreath to the grave of the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire for Christmas. The Duke and Duchess were great supporters of Baslow WI and we like to keep this tradition. Thanks to Lorna for organising the lunch for us and Vikki and friends for drinks and nibbles at the start of the walk. Happy Christmas everyone. 🌲

12 December 2018 - Christmas dinner at Chatsworth with Derbyshire Federation of WIs
'Dinner at Chatsworth' by Janette Lobley DFWI Trustee and members at Baslow WI:
Chatsworth House dinner was magical, it was a well-coordinated evening and everything went very smoothly. Trustee’s sat at different tables which worked well for meeting new members. The welcome was good and having drinks in the Painted Hall gave us all a chance to mingle. I saw some beautiful handbags! We were then shown through the rooms in Chatsworth House decorated for Christmas and the shop - of course! It was a chance to get those last minute presents and then onto the Stables Restaurant for our meal. We sat on circular tables, good for chatting. |
12 December 2018 - Christmas meeting at Baslow WI
Baslow Village Hall was a very busy place today for our WI Christmas meeting it started with a bang as we opened the bottles of bucks fizz, cut the fabulous Christmas cake made by Kate, and welcomed in our Centenary Year! Throughout this year our small Centenary sub-committee has worked on planning a programme of events for 2019, they are Ann, Gill, Judith and Kate very ably led by Caroline as 'leader'. Today members who paid for their annual membership subscription received an anniversary bag, a Centenary Programme and a WI membership booklet. There was no speaker booked for today's meeting, instead team members, Christine and Judith, led a craft workshop and everyone present was able to make a snowman. Members voted on the resolutions and the winner was 'A call against the decline in local bus services'. The collection for the Elms Foundation, formerly Chesterfield Women's Refuge, was huge and Lorna thanked everyone for their generosity. Andy J Gill, a Peak District Photographer, very kindly donated two prints on canvas and two prints on card for our special raffle today and raised £200 for our President's Charity - 2018, Derbyshire Blood Bikes. Thanks Andy that is awesome, we have never raised that much on a raffle at a meeting before!

November read.......The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop
An interesting read set in Cyprus in the 1970’s and how forty thousand people fled their homes in panic. The glitz and glamour of Famagusta was reduced to the ghost town as it still stands today. Following the fate of two families and their survival through political intervention, ethnic hatred between Greek and Turkish Cypriot residents and the invasion of the Turkish Army. Members were interested in the weave of the history into the story but felt the plot was inevitable and the characters fate transparent. A recommended read for Cyprus lovers and scored 8/10 by our members. Sue Dootson |

30 November 2018 - National Trust, Longshaw Estate
Ten members of the Baslow British Nordic Walking Group met their instructor Phill at Longshaw today. It was beautiful winter walking weather this afternoon and as the sun was going down the scenery across the Peak District was stunning.

Three Baslow WI members, Ann, Judith and Lorna travelled to Derbyshire House today for the ACWW Christmas Market. There was a wonderful selection of cards, crafts and preserves for sale and a huge raffle! Interesting guest speakers told us about projects supported by other Federations and our own Sam Hall also updated us. We got news and information from ACWW HQ and some good fundraising ideas. After a lunch of homemade soup followed by fresh fruit, we heard from Hazel a truly inspirational ACWW supporter and her trip to Outer Mongolia to visit a project involving growing herbs and spices in and around polytunnels for home use and sales. If you don't know ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) is the WI's international charity which supports women and children.

Members, as always, excelled themselves in their generosity in giving to The Elm Foundation, formerly Chesterfield Women's Refuge. Everyone enjoyed tea and mouthwatering cakes, served by four of our members, whilst mingling and supporting Judy's Bring & Buy Table, the Book Swap, signing clipboards and paying for future events/outings. 1 November 2018 - Baslow Bookworms
Baslow Bookworms meet on the 1st Thursday of each month in the homes of the Book Club members.
Review from October’s book of the month by Book Club: October’s book of the month The Hiding Places by Katherine Webb.....One overriding word from each member summed up this months read....... “Confusing” but it did compel us all to finish the book to find out who did it. Set in a small country village, around the local paper mill, two murders, fifty years apart confused the reader through a carefully woven timescale of events during a hot summer. Lots of description about the river, wildflowers, hedgerows and rolling hills (even a map at the beginning so you can navigate around the village) left you trawling through the detailed padding to get to the story. One of our lower scoring books this year with a 4/10. Sue Dootson - Baslow Bookworms Book Club Leader |
November 2018 - Birthday wishes to our members
Each month at Baslow WI we share a post wishing our members a happy birthday on our social media pages and whenever possible send the members a birthday message via email.
