25 April 2024 - WI County Quiz
Today Baslow WI hosted one of the venues for the County Quiz. Baslow had two teams, Lorna was our Quiz Master, Judith our Scorer, Ann & Liz helpers. It was an eventful evening, three teams arrived unexpectedly and somehow the Baslow members managed to accomodate them! At the end of an exciting evening Tupton WI were the winners in Baslow, over Derbyshire the winners were Duffield Cumberhills WI. Many congratulations to Tupton and thanks to everyone who took part and helped with the organisation all over Derbyshire.
25 April 2024 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire
Team Thursday enjoyed their walk today from Baslow around Bubnell, out towards Hassop and back into Baslow. A lovely walk - no rain! Izzy is a great leader, do join us and give Nordic Walking a try. Contact us for details.
24 April 2024 - At WISA today...
Eight Baslow WI members attended the social afternoon today. It was a very sociable session with members busy craftin/chatting and enjoying tea/coffee/biscuits. See today's photos of members and some of the lovely craft work being made for Chesterfield Royal Hospital's Premature Baby Unit by WISA organiser, Christine.

19 April 2024 - WI walk with Alison... ☔️💦
Today Alison had planned a 4.5 mile walk for us from Ashford in the Water via Bakewell. Sadly the heavens opened and the six Baslow Darlings were in a heavy downpour of rain when they were only about halfway around. Hazel knew a shortcut back so they went that way. Alison has plans to do the walk again on a nice sunny day! 🌞🕶

17 April 2024 - Lunch Club
Sue Stevens and Elaine Adam kindly organised the Lunch Club this month at The Chequers, Froggatt for ten members. It has been refurbished and they were given a private dining room. The food was delicious. Jane chose Stilton tart, it was served with roasted chicory and parsnip, with a small helping of finely mashed potato and an excellent sauce.

16 & 17 April 2024 - Residential courses at Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick
Three Baslow WI members, Ann, Cate and Joyce joined other Derbyshire WI members for an overnight stay at the Hayes Conference Centre. Ann and Cate were on the 'Heritage walks through Cromford & Belper' course and Joyce did the 'Creative Weaving'. All three agreed it was an excellent break and would definitely go again. Watch out in Link for future 'educational' courses organised by the Ratts (Residential and Training Team) at DFWI.

10 April 2024 - Monthly WI meeting
A very busy meeting today with an interesting presentation from Sam at Derbyshire Police Online Safety giving us all something to go away and think about.
Photos & text Karon W
Today at WI a black cat, a member, visitor from Baslow Neighbourhood Watch came to the end of our meeting to remind us that burglars are around unnoticed just as we don’t pay attention to familiar cats. The message was to be aware and to ask the organisers of NW if we need help.

3 April 2024 - The WI Spring Clean-up continues
Armed with our new equipment Jon and I today set off representing Baslow WI, to tackle Clodhall Lane as requested. We filled 10 bags and have only completed 1/3 of it!
It was a challenge with vehicles speeding past at warp factor 1 million but we persevered and survived. At one point with Jon just over the brow of the hill I caused three vehicles to stop, and asked them to slow down and drive with care. They thanked me! Lots of drivers were pipping us, in grateful thanks I presume. My most unusual find was a deceased squirrel, and Jon found L plates and a used condom - not together.
We found lots of snack food and empty alcohol bottles - champagne, cava, wine, cognac, beer and lager. We also found a car Jack, gloves, a pile of empty milk bottles, fag packets, vapes, soiled tissues, crisp packets, sweet and chocolate wrappers, a DCC cone, fizzy drink cans, plastic bottles and cartons, takeaway food wrappers and boxes etc. Clearly these people are not shopping locally, not a Chatsworth or Tyrells crisp packet in sight!
Cheers, Jayne.

26 March 2024 - Get well flowers for Judith + Chatsworth Friends garden visit...
Seven Baslow WI members who are 'Friends of Chatsworth' met today for a walk around the gardens. It was a lovely morning and they enjoyed their stroll looking at the spring flowers and blossom. It was warm enough to sit out in the courtyard for a coffee and chat after the walk. This is a regular get-together held on the last Tuesday each month meeting at 10.30am at the kiosk in the Chatsworth car park. Join us, if you can, next month! 🌼
What on earth is Cheryl looking at? From a distance we thought it was a bird feeder, read the blue sign to find out! It's interesting to get a bird's eye view of the ground below the tree the device is strapped to.
Our WI President, Judith, has been ill in hospital and now has a long road to recovery in front of her. Vikki delivered a lovely collection of spring flowers from us all at Baslow WI. We wish her a good recovery and wanted to let her know that we have been missing her at our WI get-togethers lately. Come back soon Judith! 🌸
21 March 2024 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire with Izzy and friends...
Today Izzy's Team Thursday Nordic Walkers walked from Longshaw along the Green Drive to Burbage Bridge and back, 4½ miles. A walk, mainly on paths, to avoid the mud.

20 March 2024 - Lunch Club
Today seven Baslow WI members joined Sue for lunch at Chesters, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. They all enjoyed Grimsby fish or scampi with chips and all the trimmings. They were very well looked after by the servers and all agreed it was excellent value and a lovely WI outing. Just perfect! Thanks for organising it for us Sue. Can we go again please?
18 March 2024 - The Big Plastic Count 11-17 March 2024 💚🚮♻️
A number of our members, inspired by Janette, our WI Ambassador, have joined in The Big Plastic Count, 11-17 March 2024. You will see by the pictures how much plastic waste can be collected from one household in just seven days.
This ties in well with the NFWI campaign 'Clean rivers for people and wildlife', 2023. Janette says that if manufacturers changed the way they make plastic and better still use stronger paper or cardboard for their wrapping it would save a lot of plastic waste.

Two members emailed their photos before the final count and look how much they have already collected! As a result of the count one members has stated that her cat will have canned food instead of the sachets in future as they are easily recycled.
14 March 2024 - Team Thursday Nordic Walking
Izzy’s Team Thursday Nordic Walkers enjoyed a circular walk of about four miles in Chatsworth Park before a very good lunch at the Cavendish Club.

13 March 2024 - Today at Baslow WI...
We had a busy meeting today but it was very enjoyable and informative. Our speaker, Angelique Foster told us about her work and achievements since she was elected to be Derbyshire's Crime & Police Commissioner in 2021. Our President, Judith, was sadly not with us today as she has been ill and her place was taken by Jane, our Vice President and Roving Reporter. It turned out to be an excellent meeting with some visitors and potential new members. All our members send their best wishes to Judith for a full recovery.
11 March 2024 - Dental health matters...
The resolution to be discussed at the NFWI Annual Meeting in June at The Royal Albert Hall is 'Dental Health Matters'. See how the voting went below, information on the resolution can be found on My WI.
9 March 2024 - Nordic Walking at National Trust, Longshaw
Izzy’s Team Thursday Nordic walkers did a circular route from Longshaw main car park in rather foggy and cold conditions. Ollie, the Jack Russell, indicated several times that he’d be happy to go back to the warmth of the cafe but soldiered on. He wasn’t the only one devastated to find it was closed for spring cleaning! Hot drinks were available to consume outside but that was no consolation for a cold dog.🐾

7 March 2024 - Baslow Bookworms
The Baslow Bookworms met today at Kate's home, their February read was 'Do not feed the Bear' by Rachael Elliott. It wasn't a favourite of 'The Worms'! The March read is 'Secrets of the Lavender Girls' hopefully this one will be more enjoyable for the group. One of our WI members who has moved to Cheltenham will be joining them in April and she will also be reading the book. Thanks too to Marion for collecting the books this month as Judith was away.

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See
This is a story about circumstances, culture and distance among the Akha People of Zishuangbanna, China
The Akha are an ethnic group who live in small villages at higher elevations in the mountains, in the province of Yannan China They live under a deep spiritual bondage to the spirits.
In their remote village Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akh people, ensconsed in ritual and routine, life goes on as it has for generations. Until a stranger appears at the village. The arrival of the stranger marks the first entrance of the modern world.
The story focuses on Li-yan,one of the few educated girls among the Aka. Li-Yan begins to reject the customs that shaped her early life. She violates the Aka cultural taboos in several significant ways, including having a baby before she marries.
The story continues around Li-yan’s life after she leaves her family and village, her search for the baby she had no choice but to leave at an orphanage and years later her return to her family and village.

28 February 2024 - WISA
It was a busy day at our WI Social Afternoon (WISA). There were three distinctive groups. Christine was leading a 'Learn to Crochet' session, Hazel was holding an 'Easter Wreath Making' workshop and the third group was made up of members who had just come to do their own thing, chatting and enjoying a cofee or tea. Nineteen members attended and they welcomed two visitors.
27 February 2024 - Friends of Chatsworth monthly walk
Five Baslow WI members enjoyed a short walk from Chatsworth House around the park and met up with Cheryl for a coffee in the Carriage House Cafe. It was a wonderful bright winter morning to be out sharing the park with herds of deer and very few humans!
21 February 2024 - Update from our Climate Ambassador, Janette 💚
Here’s a February update on my allotment:
Some of our members are adapting their gardens, allotments or small holdings to make better use of their spaces.
Perhaps they would like to join in with the / a calendar blog of what they are doing for food, wildlife, mental health in 2024. 💡💚
- Cleared nearly half the bed as you can see. Top ready for potatoes.
- Second bed has chicken pellets and compost to try something different.
- Third bed that has horse manure in two parts.
- Second part of the allotment bed will be 'No Dig'. This is because it’s Clay loam.

14 February 2024 - WI Monthly Meeting
Today our speaker was Jon Cook who showed us great slides, and gave us an entertaining and informative talk about borders around the world. He sold his book written over 6½ years and members were keen to buy them and have them signed too.
At today's meeting members had been asked to wear green in support of the green issues campaigned for by the WI over many years. Our Climate Ambassador, Janette encouraged members to join in The Big Plastic Count https://thebigplasticcount.com and to take and grow some of the seeds kindly shared by members. Kate asked members to offer help in the kitchen and by thanking the speakers at WI meetings. Ann told members about the new WI Learning Hub encouraging them to give it a go after explaining the sale of Denman College was funding the hub so it's our money we should use it! https://learninghub.thewi.org.uk/at-home/ She went on the tell members about a lovely email received from Liz Parker, a member of a large women's group in Holland wishing to share information and friendship with Baslow WI. June volunteered to take on this role as she has lived in Holland, correspondence will be starting soon. We hope to be able to share some news and information from the village of Twisk with our members soon.
This was an excellent meeting and we were pleased to welcome three new members and one visitor. We look forward to next month's meeting when we will welcome Angelique Foster the Derbyshire Police Commissioner.

12 February 2024 - Monday's shout-out...
These are the replies we have had from members via email...
Judith B says... 'I think my most exciting decade would be between my 20th and 30th birthday . Lots of very happy times.'
Chris F says... 'Without giving it too much thought I would say my best is the 80's when I had my children. I'm also enjoying
now - since retirement.' Ann Mc says... 'My worst decade was in my 50s when I had health problems I was glad to get into my 60s!'
June O says... 'My best decade has got to be my thirties. We moved to Derbyshire from Wales. It was like coming home, I’m a Yorkshire lass. My long awaited baby arrived, almost a miracle. I had some lovely new friends and I was a size 12 brunette. Oh and I was a member of Stoney Middleton WI and we performed on the stage at Baslow village hall.'
Gill W says... 'Definitely the 60s! No mobile phones, no Internet, only a few TV channels to choose from, pubs were for drinking not eating. I could go out and not lock the door. I could go on and on!
|
These are the replies we have had from members via Facebook...
Lorna W says... 'Now is best, trying to enjoy life to the full. The worst are better forgotten!'
Mary B says... 'My best decade was the 1970s when my children were born.'
Anna J says... 'The 90s was my worst. My then chronically ill husband got much worse and became psychotic, accusing me of trying to kill him. When everyone was talking about the Millenium Bug, he was convinced I was going to take over the world with killer bees.'
Jane W says... 'Being a teenager in the 60’s was so exciting, limitless energy, flexible limbs, perfect eye sight and hearing. Invincible really. Now, I need different glasses for distance and reading. Bits of me are dropping off, other bits are malfunctioning. So take me back to the sixties please!'
Linda Y says... 'Yes, enjoyed the 60s best when out of school! Great music, lots of parties, learnt to drive, so many new experiences. Went abroad for the first time - skiing - which I loved. As Jane says, no physical problems to worry about.'
Karen L says... '70's - great music and lads!'
7 February 2024 - Baslow Book Lovers
This month we read “Auto da Fay”, the autobiography of Fay Weldon. I chose this because I assumed that she was a hugely significant and influential writer for women of my generation. I was wrong; happily so, as this led to an even more interesting discussion of our own experiences as well as of the author’s life as reflected in the book.
The first quarter of the book explains her background, not in a chronological manner but sliding between generations. Her grandparents, who were well to do and artistic, were associated with the Bloomsbury Group. Their less than conventional way of life forms the backdrop for Fay’s development as a person and as an artist. Her grandmother proved to be a strong if somewhat other worldly woman, whose prominence in the book increases as the story progresses. Fay’s mother is a quiet survivor who works hard to support her daughters when she is abandoned by her husband, thousands of miles from home in New Zealand. The fluid structure of this section does not make it an easy read but requires the reader’s attention. The vivid description of New Zealand in the 1950’s is enthralling and comes at the point when the structure becomes more straightforward as she writes about her subsequent life as a teenager and young adult. This period prompted a lot of discussion. Far from being a reflection of the times, albeit an extreme version of it, recognisable to us all, as I had thought, our discussion underscored the fact that there is no universal experience. Evidently the Swinging Sixties didn’t reach Cumbria until the Seventies! Aside from her sexual life, she was making her way as a professional woman and raising a family at a time when the idea of equality was a distant dream, something we could all relate to. |
She was a prolific writer who never stopped pushing against the limitations placed upon women. Her well written autobiography reflects her complexity and the rapidly changing mores of the times.
The Book Lovers meet on the first Wednesday of each month in one another’s homes. We are happy to welcome new readers. If transport is a problem, we can see what we can do to help. We enjoy a wide variety of books, which reflect the diversity of our tastes. Our discussions, which start with the book and then develop, lead us into knowing one another far better than there is time for at WI meetings. Next month’s book is “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” by Lisa See. Sitting down with a cuppa will never be the same again.
Sue.

5 February 2024 - Time for a shout-out again...
These are the replies we have had from members via email...
June O says... 'I would never live in another country. I have travelled widely and firmly believe that Britain is the best country in the world. It is a very beautiful island with such a varied landscape, the weather is kind, no massive variables (usually). I think we are very privileged to live here.'
Vikki W says... 'No surprises, would be Cyprus!'
Marion H says... 'This country is not perfect by any means but I would not choose to live in another.'
Kate T says... 'No, more than happy where I am.'
Dace G says... 'Nope. Done that already, and very happy with the result!'
Cate H says... 'I don,t want to move,, but if I had to it would be New Zealand.'
|
Kathy H says... 'Last year. we moved from Wales to Baslow, does that count?' We say... 'Yes, hope you are happy here with us!'
Catherine O says... 'I would not like to move permanently as I really do like England. However, during the colder months somewhere warm would be nice. There are many places I would go, too many to mention!'
These are the replies we have had from members via Facebook...
Ann Mc says... 'I often think I would like to move somewhere warmer, I love my holidays but always look forward to coming home and walking my dog in beautfiul Derbyshire. I'd miss WI too'
Mary B says... 'Home is where the heart is so no I’m staying here in Derbyshire.'
Cheryl M says... 'No I feel very fortunate to live in the Peak District.'
Jane W says... 'When I was younger my parents lived in Borneo on the edge of the rain forest. Every day there was another weird creature or plant to see. Unfortunately most bit, stung, sucked your blood, poisoned you or hooked into you. So perhaps I’ll stay home with Peak District midges!'
Lorna W says... 'I’ve lived in other countries, had lots of experiences, but the place you come from is best. Home is where the heart is.'
Joyce L says... 'Holidayed in many wonderful places but born and bred here, the Peak District for me!'
Sandra J says... 'Would love to live somewhere warmer but family and friends are here so I couldn’t leave them.'
Anna J says... 'I used to think I’d like to live in France but it changed so much.'

1 February 2024 - Baslow Bookworms
Judith usually collects a set of books for the Baslow Bookworms from the library and returns them the following month. This proved to be too complicated over Christmas and New Year so The Bookworms took the decision to all read a book of our own choice and report back on them in our first meeting in February. This is the list of books - you might like to Google them to see if they are books you would enjoy.
Murder by the Minster by Helen Cox An easy read for a busy time. Enjoyable for anyone craving a good murder The Other Family by Joanna Trollope An intriguing family story following the death of a once famous pianist who has two families. The siblings, from both relationships, only discover this after his death and when his will leaves his prize possessions to one family and nothing to the other. Fireworks and fighting begins. A well written Trollope classic - an author many of us l like. The Vow by Debbie Howells. An author none of us had read previously but was enjoyed by one of the group. A wedding called off by the future bride when her fiancé just disappears two weeks before the wedding. On reporting him missing to the police she learns that another woman has also reported him missing... Intriguing! The Offing by Benjamin Myers In the late 1940s a young boy has finished his school exams and does not want do the expected and go down the pit like his father and grandfather. Instead he leaves his home near Durham determined to see something of the country, if not the world. The book describes what he does find and how he lives. A lovely book, well written with beautiful descriptive language . A MUST read . Bertie plays the blues by Alexander McCall Smith One of the Scotland Street series. A bit confusing at times, but definitely worth a read. And finally one of us thought it was about time to revisit a classic... Villette by Charlotte Bronte This is what the Bookworm thought... 'Well it might be a classic but boy is it boring and ponderous! Thank goodness I didn’t live in those times. Not for me as I like to read a book for escapism and I definitely felt trapped by this one. There are classics I have enjoyed but not this one.' This month we are reading 'Do not feed the Bear' by Rachel Elliott I will report back after our next meeting. Judith. |
1 February 2024 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire...
Today Team Thursday walked from Baslow to Froggatt along the riverside and back, in total they walked 6.4 miles. An excellent walk, perfect for Nordic Walking as the poles were not hindered by gorse and bracken as they are on moorland. Some of the group went in for lunch at The Cafe on the Green in Baslow and met up with another walking group, 'beginners', who were joining Izzy's 1pm session.

31 January 2024 - Soup & Sweet Charity Lunch...
Today at Baslow WI 45 members came along to our President's Charity Soup & Sweet Lunch in aid of Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport. With the ticket sales and the raffle our takings were £602 before expenses. The WI team and helpers worked hard with the organisation of this event and many of the members helped with the clearing up at the end. We thank everyone who helped in any way today. The total raised for the President's Charity so far this year is now over £1,000. We will announce the full amount at our Annual Meeting in May.
30 January 2024 - Friends of Chatsworth Monthly Walk...
Today eight Baslow WI members who are 'Friends of Chatsworth' met in the car park for a circular walk around the park and back to the cafe for coffee. It was a very pleasant winter morning for a walk, with no rain, plenty of sunshine but also plenty of mud!
29 January 2024 - Monday's shout-out...
These are the replies we have had from members via email...
Mary W says... 'Paddington Bear, I too love marmalade and we could make some together!'
Jane W says... 'Well that’s tricky. I'm thinking Alan Titmarsh or Monty Don but all the Darlings at Baslow WI would be trying to get a look in, so I’m choosing Carol Klein. What a garden I’d have, with cuttings and seeds from all the famous gardens around the world!'
Judith B says... 'Easy - Paddington Bear!'
June O says... 'It would have to be Joan Collins. She has a wonderful sense of humour, she would invite me to one of her beautiful homes and allow me to raid her makeup, jewellery and wardrobe. Hopefully she would entertain me by serving some nice wine and nibbles and very indiscreet gossip about her famous friends. What fun that would be!'
Dace M... 'Thinking about it, I’d go for Ian Hislop.'
Marion H says... 'Characters I’ve always enjoyed? Definitely Paddington but Winnie the Pooh & Snoopy get my admiration too!
|
Catherine O says... 'Lady Pamela Hicks. What an amazingly wonderful, varied, interesting and privileged life she has had. Such stories to tell. Also Robert Downey junior. Great actor with comic timing.'

25 January 2024 - Nordic Walking
Izzy’s Team Thursday Nordic Walkers started at Longshaw this morning, completing a four mile circuit over the moors before welcome refreshments in the National Trust cafe. The high winds from earlier in the week had died down but were replaced by low cloud and a distinct lack of views! Ollie is back on form after his operation and posed beautifully in front of the ducks.

24 January 2024 - Hot news from NFWI the Learning Hub is live...
The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes)
24 January at 10:22 - https://learninghub.thewi.org.uk/
The WI Learning Hub is the exciting next step on our educational journey and will deliver a rich variety of learning experiences for members, bringing together a joined-up feel to education across the WI. By recognising the continual changes that we all face; the Hub will take users on a learning journey that is accessible, flexible, and inclusive, and empower all women and girls to reach their goals, regardless of their learning adventure.
Courses will be delivered in a range of formats; there will be live courses and pre-recorded courses, meaning members will be able to access and watch at their leisure. Members will be able to access downloadable and printable resources and there’s bound to be a few quizzes or competitions for members to flex their competitive streak! Members will be able to access a variety of free courses, however, there will be a small number of courses delivered that will incur a charge – where this happens, we will ensure costs are kept to an absolute minimum for members.
Most importantly, we will strive to ensure all our online content is accessible and reflects the needs of a neurodiverse audience.
As we learn, we evolve, and the Hub will be no exception; over the coming months, members will be part of the growth and evolution of the Hub. Constructive feedback will be crucial to the ongoing development of the Hub; we want members to be a part of the future of learning, but we can only do this successfully if members, work with us. There will be opportunities for feedback after courses, through the newsletter, and of course, the staff team is always open to hearing from members, so we encourage everyone to engage with us and help make the WI a gateway to lifelong learning.

24 January 2024 - News shared at WISA today...
This is a call to anyone who knits or crochets to take part in a nationally backed campaign through a charity called Standing with Giants (https://www.standingwithgiants.co.uk). They have planned to install 1475 silhouettes across the wild meadow fields of the British Normandy Memorial called ‘For Your Tomorrow’. If you have travelled along parts of the M40 or been to Blenheim Palace you will have also seen similar works by an artist called Dan Barton.
The WI have been asked to knit or crochet poppies for use around these silhouettes and for around displays at Nelson Fort in Southampton to mark the 80th Anniversary of the D-day landings. We are inviting you to help. The poppies must all be red, with black centres and their ends woven in. The cut off date for them arriving is Saturday 9th March. Could your WI help? Once made, if you would like to send them please contact Fay Rumley on: [email protected] for the postal address. |

17 January 2024 - WI walk at Linacre Reservoirs & Lunch Club
Today seven members of Baslow WI met for a walk around Linacre Reservoirs. The sun shone for them and the ice on the ground sparkled. They started with a coffee and some nibbles in the car park and then ventured off, cautiously, through the woods and around the lower reservoirs. Time was marching on quicker than they were so they had to miss the last part of of the walk around the boardwalk. They arrived on time at The Peacock at Cutthorpe where they met two more friends from WI and enjoyed a light lunch followed by coffee. As always the food and service was excellent at The Peacock, our thanks go to the staff there.

10 January 2024 - First monthly meeting of the year...
Today's meeting was very well attended by members and visitors. We were delighted to welcome two new members, Christine and Mandy. Ashley Franklin was an excellent speaker. He is a brilliant photographer and writer and has written for Derbyshire Life for many years. He gave us a wonderful tour around Derbyshire with his PowerPoint presentation. Judith our President told us that Baslow WI's Resolution for 2024 is to be kind to each other. Our members were as usual generous with their donations to the Elm Foundation and also to the raffles planned for the future. Social time was 'Best & Worst Christmas gifts.' As you can image there were some very funny stories. We are already looking forward to the next meeting but we have lots to looks forward to before that. Check our the Diary Page of this website to find out what!

1 January 2023 - Monday's shout-out!
This week is the 7th recent 'Monday Shout-out', we had a two week break for Christmas.
It has been running successfully for many years on our Facebook page and now we thought it was time to share it with our members via email and this webpage.
During the COVID lockdowns we did something similar and had great fun chatting online with members at the weekends when everyone was feeling isolated. Now seems a good time to re-start it in a slightly different format during the dark days of autumn and winter.

Kathy H says... 'I did make ny resolutions but broke them before 31 Jan. so now just carry on and enjoy the moment.'

13 December 2023 - Christmas meeting + tea.
Our Christmas meeting, held in Baslow Village Hall was a great success. Members were welcomed with a drink of wine or juice. Then it all started with the children from St Anne's School singing filling the stage and singing beautifully with all the appropriate actions! They were rewarded by Darling Jane with some fabulous Christmas pencils. No fighting over colours and shapes was to be allowed! Our WI Adviser, Christine, gave us a short talk about her training and role as an Adviser in Derbyshire Federation. Full members voted on the short listed resolutions, see the results above. Kate and Iris gave us a fabulous and very professional wreath making demonstration. In next to no time they had constructed a wonderful array of Christmas wreaths. Then it was tea time. The WI Team and their fabulous helpers had produced platters of sandwiches, cakes and flapjacks all washed down with tea and coffee. Julia W was thanked by our President, Judith, for her many years as Link Correspondent with Hukanui-Hamua WI in New Zealand and Lesley thanked everyone for all their hard work during 2023. Everyone went home happy at the end of a very busy but fun afternoon.
Four photos sent in by Anna of members around the hall and the last one if from Janette...

These are the replies we have had from members via email...
June O says... 'I enjoy the Christmas season, I love to put up decorations and send cards and messages to people I only contact at this time of year. I must say I don’t like to see decorations in late November or enjoy the commercialisation of Christmas.'
Judith B says... 'It is hard work , but I absolutely love it.'
Jill D says... 'Seeing friends and family make it enjoyable.'
Mary W says... 'I dislike the over commercialisation and feel the expectations that everyone will have a wonderful time leads to disappointment for some people.'
Jane W says... 'The last four clusters of golden spheres (courtesy of President Judith) will go up in Baslow Village Hall about thirty minutes before our WI Christmas Meeting starts! I always seem to be cutting things fine no matter how organised I am. I think we are our own worst enemies. We, women, load ourselves down with more and more Christmas activities.'
Mary B says... 'Love it. Yes it's hard work especially when your family are actually staying with you, but bring it on.'
|
Janette L says... 'My Christmas tree is going up this week. The meaning of Christmas is something to celebrate and good.
Kath H says... 'Christmas is good. Fun, family, friends, food. What more could you want? OK, alcohol! It doesn't have to be hard work - Amazon and Sainsburys will deliver everything!'
Joyce L says... 'Love Christmas, my bank balance not so much!'
Judy D says... 'We will be celebrating Christmas early with family and I will miss the WI meeting and tea.'
Alison H says... 'I'm usually in denial about Christmas until the very last minute, and this year is no exception. I hate the build-up but I do love Christmas Day itself. A special day with family, which this year will include my new baby grandson - can't wait!'
Jane M says... 'I love Christmas and now my children are grown up it is fairly easy, but I do miss the excitement of when they were little.'
Catherine O says... 'I love Christmas. My mother was born on Christmas Eve and 73 years later passed away on Christmas Day. However my youngest son was born exactly 1 year later on Christmas Day. So he’s a very special person for obvious reasons. Happy Christmas everyone.'
These are the replies we received from members via our Facebook page...
Lorna W says... 'Some of it I like very much but it’s getting too commercial. The true meaning of Christmas gets forgotten so I try to keep it simple.'
Vikki W says... 'Starts too early, food in September! That gets stressful, but just do what suits you.'
Janette L says... 'Very good for us. Luke 2 (WE) celebrated Jesus birth. Small business hopefully sell more gifts. Keep it simple join with family, friends and values.'
Karon W says... 'Love it for the grandkids but I’m happy going for a walk and picnic on Christmas Day. Surprising how many others do the same!'
|
Sue P says... 'Christmas is lovely but some of the magic is gone when your children & grandchildren grow up.'
Cheryl M says... 'Love it but the hype spoils it. The simpler the better for me.'
Ann Mc says... 'I think some people let themselves in for work they can't really cope with and compalin later. I love seeing all the lights and decorations though but agree with others that it all starts way too early. Christmas must be nice for people with religious convictions but that's not me. Let's all enjoy this time of year and make it what we want not what others expect.'
Marian G says... 'I like to be out in the hustle and bustle of it all and then the calm of the nine lessons and carols in church.'
Dace G says... 'It’s my favourite…. I love the work because it brings family together.'
10 December 2023 - Next year's WI programme
Karon has planned a wonderful programme for us at Baslow WI in 2024. Ann has printed the programmes on cards for the members to collect at the next WI meeting. All details will be on the Diary Page of this website but members still like a printed copy for their own diaries/handbags.

Today at Baslow WI members joined a Fused Glass Workshop with tutor, Stevie Davies in Baslow Village Hall. During the afternoon all members designed and made three glass hanging ornaments. Stevie has taken them all home and will fire them in her kiln and attach metal hooks and ribbons for us. They will be collected by Karon, who kindly organised this session, and returned to members at the next meeting. A big thank you to Karon and Stevie, it was a great way to spend an afternoon.

During the COVID lockdowns we did something similar and had great fun chatting online with members at the weekends when everyone was feeling isolated. Now seems a good time to re-start it in a slightly different format during the dark days of autumn and winter.🍁

Caroline E... 'My choice would be “Those are the days of my life” by Freddie Mercury.'

23 November 2023 - Nordic Walking
Today Team Thursday met with Izzy at Curbar Gap and she plotted an excellent circular two hour walk from Curbar Gap, passing the Wellington Monument above Baslow. The ground was extremely muddy in places but all the walkers were well equiped and the Izzy's route avoided the worst tracks on the moorland. Rain came just as the walkers were stretching at the end of their walk. Thanks again to Izzy she's a star.
22 November 2023 - WISA (Christmas is on its way!)
Today at WISA our Roving Reporter, Jane, gathered together volunteer members to help decorate our Village Hall for Christmas. In this photo we can see one finished section in blue and gold to match the new chairs and curtains in the hall. Beautiful, well done 'Darlings'.

At the front of the stage, Alison, Kate and Valerie decorated a Christmas Tree in red a great contrast with the blue curtains behind.

20 November 2023 - Baslow Bikers
Today we welcomed two new Bikers, Judy and Peter. Judy is a Baslow WI member. Liz was our leader and she took us on a 15 mile return ride from Poolsbrook Country Park to Rother Valley Country Park where the cyclists enjoyed coffee and goodies from the cafe in warming sunshine. Rain soon followed and the Bikers beat a hasty retreat back to the car park. Liz cycled an extra 12 miles as she rode to the meeting place from her home in Clowne.

via email... Carol H says... 'Yes if I know the celebrities. This year I know only Krishnan, Angela and Annabelle. I shall continue watching until Annabelle is voted out.' Jane W says... 'I’m not a fan but I tuned in to watch Angela Ripon last night. Amazing at 79 years. She may not have won the competition but she won my admiration, agile, energetic and dancing in high heels. Amazing.' |
Sandra M says... 'I haven’t watched a single episode of Strictly, even though I know it's very popular, it does not appeal to me personally.'
Kate T says... 'Definitely a big fan in this house, it is always interesting to see how the dancers progress and who goes out each week.'
Dace G says... 'I always have been, but I seem to have stopped watching TV, so haven’t seen a single episode this year.'
Iris H says... 'I am. I love dancing and did all styles in my youth at dance school and ballroom classes when I was in college. There are a few performances I remember as special - Jill Halfpenny’s jive with Darren, Louis Smith and Flávio’s show dance and Giovanna and Rose from last year. This time I love Ellie and Vito but I also admire the two men.'
June O says... I really enjoy Strictly but I record it and watch it the following days. I can them whizz through the silly bits and just see the dances and the scores.

Joyce L says... 'Yes, although this year has been quite controversial!'
Janette L says... 'Yes I am, specially this year with Angela Rippon. She has shown there’s no such thing as aged, too old. Mind you personally I don’t think my legs will rise that high!! We can exercise at any age to be healthier and feeling better.'

Judy D says... 'I love the costumes….. as a person who has made several wedding dresses and prom dresses, I know how much skill goes into the making of those beautiful garments.'
Jill D says... 'Yes I am a fan of Strictly Come Dancing.'

16 November 2023 - Baslow WI's 104 Birthday Lunch
Today 38 members of Baslow WI enjoyed a lunch celebrating 104 years of the WI in Baslow. The lunch, at Sickleholme Golf Club, Bamford was most enjoyable, it included a welcome drink, a main course and dessert followed by tea or coffee and mints. The meal was beautifully served and everyone enjoyed themselves. As always these 'away days' are a great chance for members to get to know each other and share ideas for the WI going forward. WI President, Judith, wished members a happy 104th birthday and they all raised their glasses in a toast to the King, who celebrated his 75th birthday yesterday, not as old as us! 🤣
15 November 2023 - News from Baslow History Group...
The group has recently republished this leaflet showing a walk around the village which describes many interesting facts about its history and heritage. They are obtainable from most retail outlets in Nether End and Church End including the Co-op and the Village Shop. In the past, this leaflet has been very popular with visitors to the area. If any owners of hotels, guest houses or B&Bs would like a supply for their guests, please contact David Dawson on 07940438988 or email: [email protected]

A really fun meeting bringing back memories from our childhood. During the social time members exhibted kitchen implements over a hundred years old and told thestories that went with them. Karon took some videos from the back of the hall we are unable to post these on this website but you can see one on our Facebook page.
The following photos were taken by Karon from the back of the hall with her captions...

12 October 2023 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire 🥾
Today Izzy's Team Thursday was pretty big, 15 in all! They enjoyed a fabulous 2½ hour walk from Thornbridge Hall and around Great Longstone. They were enjoying the autumn sunshine and commented that there would probably not be many more days this year when it will be possible to walk without coats and bobble hats on! Thanks Izzy for a great walk.
11 October 2023 - Monthly meeting today...
It was an excellent meeting today with 60+ members and visitors present. The speaker Kim Kerry talked about her love of spinning yarn of all descriptions. Jane enthused about Apple Day encouraging more members to go next year and showed her winning certificate for Apple Strudel. Our members very generously donated to both the Elm Foundation and the Cancer Research Shop where Karon works. Chrstine ran a sales table selling her craft work and very kindly donated 50% of her takings to our President's Charity. Ann told us about the NFWI Annual Meeting in June at The Royal Albert Hall and organised a draw for a delegate which she won! To close the meeting members held a 'Show & Tell' of things they have made using yarn. What amazing talent we have amongst our members! Thanks everyone.
9 October 2023 - Ivy Laundry Soap
Anna has made some laundry soap for use in her washing machine. She's boiled up some ivy leaves in water allowed, them to cool and added some essential oil. She says she's not noticed any difference in the cleanliness of the washing, she's saving money too as she boiled the leaves on the top of her log burning stove. 💚
Anna got the idea from the book 'Knowledge To Forage'.

7 October 2023 🍎🍏
Today we were blessed with wonderful dry sunny weather for the Community Jubilee Orchard's Apple Day. Baslow WI members loaded up their cars with gazebos, and items for sale. We introduced 'A blind date with a book' £1 for adults and 50p for children and by selling hot drinks, cakes, preserves and Christine's crafts we took £137.15. We donated £50 to the Orchard Group. Sadly this event was not well supported by Baslow WI members. It was a happy community day, come along next year and enjoy the Orchard, you will be made very welcome. Our sincere thanks go to those who helped in any way and special thanks to David Dawson, Jon Rawlinson and other WI Supporting Husbands (WISH) we would struggle to support this community event without their help.
🍎 AROUND THE ORCHARD 🍏
3 October 2023 - WOW! 🌻
These should be prize winning sunflowers growing on Coombs Rd, Bakewell snapped by Anna and gaining over 100 'likes' on a Bakewell Facebook group page. How lovely that the man in the garden (owner/gardener) was happy to pose with them, he must be proud!
2 October 2023 - More harvesting and preparing for winter meals...
Anna has been busy making herb vinegar, whole grain mustard and rosehip oil. She does much of her cooking on the top of her log burner saving energy and keeping cosy all at the same time. 💚
1 October 2023 - Happy birthday this month...
We wish our members with birthdays in October a very happy day. On their actual birthday they will receive a birthday email sent by our Correspondence Secretary on behalf of all the WI members.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR LOCAL PEOPLE...
28 September 2023 - Team Tuesday Nordic Walking at Longshaw
27 September 2023 - Today at Baslow WI and it's free!
Nine Baslow WI members attended WISA today, and enjoyed a really sociable afternoon Angela was doing some patchwork, Ann, Christine and Julia knitting, Lorna a spot of mending and Anna crochet. Others just called in for tea, biscuits and to enjoy a chat. Apples were a topic of conversation some of the members have none this year and others have a glut. Sharing is a good solution as we did today! 💚🍏

26 September 2023 - 'Friends of Chatsworth' garden visit...
Just four 'Friends of Chatsworth' met for the monthly garden walk today. We had a lovely gentle walk enjoying the scenery and snapping a few photos. We walk on every 4th Tuesday meeting at 10.30am. When the house and gardens are closed after Christmas we still meet and walk in the park. Join us next time.
Colourful versions of Swiss Chard in the Kitchen Garden at Chatsworth - Rhubard Red and Rainbow
25 September 2023 - Will they make her cry?
Janette has grown these lovely large onions, Kelsey and another type of globe onion. The Kelsey are from seed and the other from plugs bought at the garden centre. She says they are now hanging in tights! I am sure she will be making them into delicious warm soups and dinners later this autumn and winter.
24 September 2023 - Help needed!
Have you got some time to spare? Could YOU help with the running of our lovely Village Hall?
23 September 2023 - Remembering (or learning about) Harry Greenwood 1927-1999
HARRY THE TRAMP
Thanks to 'Celebrating Eccentric Britain (Past & Present)' for sharing this post on Facebook...
Harry was born in Neepsend, Sheffield (possibly on Fox Street), in 1927. He then lived with his parents (Fred and Elsie) on Wallace Road. He had at least one brother, who would visit him in Baslow, and he may have had a sister, in Australia, who wanted him to come to her but he decided not to. It is thought that he was a skilled electrician in who may have had an electrical shop. Some people say that he was an educated man, some are convinced he was a Doctor although there seems no reason for this. Some also say that he had musical skills and played piano.
He married a Greek woman in the late 1940's/early 1950''s, There are suggestions that he left in the 1960's and travelled, only re-appearing sporadically. Some believe that his wife died and that he could not cope with it. This was why he became 'homeless'. However, this is just 'theory' and others have different ideas. This includes him being an eccentric rich man.
Harry found a support network in Baslow second to none. Baslownians were exceptionally good towards him. Before he moved into the cave, on Chesterfield Road, Harry lived in a wooden stable provided free by a local farm; in the mornings he walked along to Goose Green and a drink was brought out to him from the local shop, which he consumed in the bus shelter. Here he received generous “handouts” from the regular local lorry drivers, sometimes a sandwich other times a five-pound note. Baslownians helped him with his Pension application enabling him to buy his own provisions and he received the best of health care from Baslow. With long hair and a face blackened with wood fire smoke he was instantly recognisable but, as far as I know, he was never taunted or ridiculed. Later in life when he moved into the cave he still received generous food deliveries from Baslow residents and in wintertime he was always
given a good warm coat. The people of Baslow who supported Harry never sought thanks for their actions, they just wanted to give him help.
At one point in his life he lived in Robin Hoods Cave under Stanage Edge only eventually to be driven out by some thugs. He was given a small outbuilding to live in by a local farmer at Baslow where he spent his final days. He developed a leg infection which turned gangenous. He was taken into hospital where he was told if his leg wasn't amputated he would die. Harry knew that if he allowed the operation it would mean a long stay in hospital and he knew that meant being away from his outdoor life and his farm animal friends. Harry made his choice and refused the operation.
He passed away and was buried near the river at St Anne's Church. The service was very well attended.
Locals erected a bench in his honour with an engraving that read -
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
I am the happy wanderer
The words 'The Happy Wanderer' were also engraved on his grave stone.

22 September 2023 - Derbyshire Day
HAPPY DERBYSHIRE DAY DARLINGS:
Isn't the Derbyshire flag lovely?
Did you know?
The blue on the flag represents our rivers and reservoirs. The green, the beautiful green countryside we have here and the gold Tudor Rose has been the badge of Derbyshire since the 15th century.
The flag was created in 2006 so is modern compared with other county flags.

21 September 2023 - Team Thursday Nordic Walking
Every week during school term time Baslow WI members walk with 'Nordic Walking Derbyshire', they used to go on Tuesdays but recently it has changed to Thursday to suit our instructor, Izzy. Today the walkers met at The Peak Village and enjoyed a 4.5 mile walk high above Rowsley looking towards Matlock. The weather was perfect for this wonderful walk though Peak District, farms, fields and woodland.
20 September 2023 - WI Walk and Lunch Club celebrating a belated WI Day!
Seven Baslow WI members walked with Cate on her river walk from Curbar Church. This was followed by lunch at the Derwent Water Arms, Calver when 16 members enjoyed a lunch served in the conservatory with lovely views across the playing fields at Calver. The weather was not good for the walk, wet but not cold, a few members cancelled but the 'hardy annuals' turned up and enjoyed the walk and talk. Scroll down to 16 September to find out about WI Day......
17 September 2023 - It's arrived!
The new speed watch sign has now been erected on Calver Rd, Baslow. Let's hope it will do its job and slow the traffic making it safer for all road users in the village of Baslow.
16 September 2023 - WI Day 2023
Today the National Federation of Women's Institutes is 108 years old. The first WI in the UK was formed in Anglesey on 16 September 1915. At Baslow WI we are not far behind, we will be celebrating 104 years in November this year! Visit the WI diary on this website to see our plans for celebrating WI Day this year.
15 September 2023 - Look what Anna's been up to now!
13 September 2023 - WI monthly meeting...
At this month's meeting we welcomed back James Ellson for a second time. His talk this month was about Apples and fitted in very well with our Bring & Buy table with a harvest theme and #SeptemberSeedSwap. James is a retired Detective Inspector, he has had two crime novels published and now lives in the Peak District as self sufficiently as possible. A very interesting chap to listen to!
As always our members were very generous with their donations for the Elm Foundation, the WI raffle and their support of our President's Charity, Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport and The Air Ambulance. This was an excellent meeting with members filling the Village Hall and enjoying tea and homemade cakes at the interval. Thanks to our President her Team and all the helpers involved with the organisation of this meeting. |
Members are welcomed by Karon at the 'Sign-in Table'
13 September 2023 - Pesto time! 💚
More harvesting has been done one by our members. Iris has made Pesto using her basil and garlic. Looks scrumptious!
12 September 2023 - Preparing #SeptemberSeedSwap 💚
At the Baslow WI September meeting tomorrow we will be having our #SeptemberSeedSwap. Roving Reporter Jane has been 'painfully' been sorting hers for us, she's making a great job of it too. Have you done yourse yet?
12 September 2023 - 💚🐭🍏🦋
Janette, our WI Climate Ambassador, has published her latest Green Newsletter today. It has been circulated via email to all our members. You can download it here.
It was a coincidence that Jane, our WI Roving Reporter, snapped this Speckled Wood Butterfly on the same day that Janette was finalising her newsletter in which they were mentioned. Thank you to both of them.

11 September 2023 - Preparing for Apple Day
Apple Day here in Baslow will be on Saturday 7 October. 12 midday at the Community Jubilee Orchard off Over Road, Baslow. This weekend Ann started making apple chutney using her homegrown apples. There is a very good crop of cooking and eating apples this year so no doubt there will be more for sale on the Bring & Buy table before Christmas!
10 September 2023 - Women's Cricket in Derby 🏏
Great photos taken by Lorna's neighbour, Anna, of our Nordic Walking Instructor, Izzy and her team, playing in the finals of the women's cricket at Derby County Cricket Ground recently. Thanks for sharing with us Anna.

Team Thursday (formerly known as Team Tuesday) met for the first time since the summer break today. It was good to be back. Eleven members joined Izzy for an excellent three-mile walk around Longshaw Estate. We were pleased to welcome Ann a new member and we all did some revision on our use of Nordic Poles! A perfect way to spend the morning in the super Derbyshire sunshine and scenery. Thanks Izzy. See you next time.

16 August - Baslow Bikers meet at Parsley Hay
Today six Baslow Bikers met for their 'Summer Cycle'. They set off from Parlsey Hay towards Pilsbury following the track along the valley to Hartington and on to Biggin where they joined the Tissington Trail. They had a coffee stop and enjoyed their picnic lunch in the sunshine on the side of the trail before cycling around Tissington and back to the cars along the trail. This ride was NOT without incident! Gordon had a gear jam on the hill from Hartington to Biggin and Judith experienced the same on a hill in Tissington! These were fixed, no problems, apart from greasy hands BUT Liz had an explosive puncture two miles from the cars. The pictures tell the story! All ended well, after 26 miles and they agreed to fix another date for a cycle soon. They hope other eBikers will join them. 🚴♂️🚴♀️

Today seven walkers met Ann at the National Trust, Longshaw Estate for a short walk to Surprise Corner, Hathersage, to enjoy the heather which is almost in full bloom now. They were blessed with a lovely warm day, the walk was easy and took just two hours. Some of the walkers ended the morning with a light lunch in the cafe at Longshaw.
5 August 2023 - Invitation from Chatsworth WI...
Today Baslow WI members met at 10.30am at Baslow Village Hall. They had planned to walk through Chatsworth Park to Edensor and support the Chatsworth WI's fundraiser, 'Coffee in the Garden'. Rain was pouring from the cloudy sky so Judith and Lorna offered lifts to the walkers and they drove to Edensor to support the event. Even though the weather was pretty dire, many members from local WIs were there enjoying time to catch up and eat the super sandwiches and cakes with tea and coffee made by Chatsworth members. The Tombola stall was well laden with prizes and members were going back for 2nd, 3rd and 4th goes! We will report on how much money was made when we have the news. Thanks to all WI members supporting this event and to Chatsworth WI for their hard work. See you next year! ☔️
Edit: We have just heard that £251.50 was rasied at this event. Well done Chatsworth WI. (10 August 2023)

Today, International Friendship Day, we shared this post on our socail media, and also emailed it to all our 78 members wishing them a good day and suggesting they contact a friend, maybe one they haven't seen for a while or maybe one they see nearly every day. We've had a very good response. Thanks Darlings! 💕
29 July 2023 - Success a cutting from The Botanical Gardens, Birmingham!
On 4 July members of Baslow WI enjoyed a visit to the Botanical Gardens, Birmingham. Our guide there, Chris, was excellent and told us so many interesting things about plants and trees growing there. He gave this cutting to Janette and told her if she put it in a glass of water it would grow roots and she could plant it. Nothing happened for three weeks then all of a sudden 'viola'! The plant is Cyperus Alternifolia or Umbrella Plant. Well done Janette, you are a true Green Greenie!
25 July 2023 - Friends of Chatsworth walk...
Ann, Cate, Janette, Kate, Lorna, Sue and Vikki met at the Coffee Kiosk in the Chatsworth House car park for the WI monthly visit to Chatsworth. Today they walked in the kitchen garden and over the top of the gardens to the rock garden and back to the house for coffee. A very pleasant morning to be out and about in the warm sunshine.

24 July 2023 - Darlings go to Thornbridge Hall
Today Ann organised a visit to Thornbridge Hall, Ashford in the Water. Ten members met in Quakers Cafe at Thornbridge for a coffee before meeting up with our guide, Andrea. She gave us an excellent tour inside and outside of the hall with many interesting snippets of information that really made the visit special. Thanks Andrea! After the tour members enjoyed a snack or lunch in the cafe before heading home. After all the rain we've had recently we were extremely lucky to have sunny weather for this outing. 🌻

21 July 2023 - Baslow Bikers are back out there!
Five Baslow Bikers met at Thorpe Salvin for a 25 mile ride along the Chesterfield Canal to Worksop through Clumber Park then to Holbeck and Creswell Crags and back to Thorpe Salvin. They continued to cycle through three or four pretty heavy rain storms but managed to eat their picnic at Creswell Crags in dry weather. All are determined to do this lovely cycle, plotted by Gordon, again in glorious sunshine! Dates WILL be planned! We were sad that other Bikers were unable to join us for good reasons not just the weather! We look forward to welcoming Allison with her eBike to Baslow Bikers.

20 April 2023 - WI Lunch Club
Our WI Lunch Club members enjoyed their monthly get-together at Fischer's in Baslow. This is one of their smartest venues, so 'posh frocks' were the order of the day! Following lunch they enjoyed a tour of the garden, it was looking magnificent as was the hall in the July sunshine. Thanks very much to Lorna for organising this venue for us.

18 July 2023 - Nordic Walking around Millthorpe
Izzy's Team Tuesday met today for a three mile Nordic Walk around Millthorpe, ending with a cheese platter at the Royal Oak. Unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to sit out in the garden but at least the rain held off until the walk finished.

17 July 2023 - WI walk Bradford Dale
Three Baslow WI members joined Sue for her picnic walk along the River Bradford and the Limestone Way around the beautiful village, Youlgreave. They started off in glorious sunshine and just as they finished eating their picnic lunch the heavens opened. Not a problem! They packed up quickly, got wet weather gear on and continued the walk ending up where they started in sunshine too! A really good walk with plenty of chatter along the way.
13 July 2023 - Who's grown these?

12 July 2023 - Monthly Meeting
Our speaker, Kate Henderson gave a very informative talk outlining the ways to research family history. The talk was illustrated by amusing entries from the Parish records, commenting on births and deaths by the entry made by the local priests. We had our usual collection for the Elm Foundation and today members donated 36 dresses to be taken to Ashgate Hospice Shop. Our Treasurer had reported that our collections, in lieu of paying for tea/coffee, of £1pp had raised £600 for Ashgate Hospice from January to June this year. Our collections for the next six months will go to Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance. 🚁

20 June 2023 - Visit to Litton & Tideswell with Hazel
Report from Hazel who organised this event - thank you very much Hazel...
Seven Baslow WI members braved the heavy rain to walk from Litton to Tideswell to see the well dressings. Sanctuary was found in the "Cathedral in the Peaks" where we saw an ecclesiastical embroidery exhibition whilst listening to an organ recital. We marvelled at the views through the mist despite another heavy downpour on the way back. This was followed by a lovely lunch and cakes galore in the village hall all made and served by the mums. Refreshed and thawed out we ventured out to watch to watch the village school children dressed in Victorian costume sing and dance around the maypole. Unfortunately it rained so much that l didn't get my camera out to take any photos. I went back on Wednesday and took one this for you.

16 June 2023 - Visit to Pollyanna Pickering's Gallery + lunch
Eight members from Baslow WI visited the art gallery of the late Pollyanna Pickering. They were welcomed by Pollyanna's daughter Anna-Louise who talked them through the latest exhibition which is open to the public now. Members enjoyed the talk and looking at the fabulous wildlife paintings. They purchased cards, calendars, bags, jigsaws etc. Anna-Louise made us very welcome and posed with us for some photos. After the gallery visit five members enjoyed lunch at The Terrace Cafe in Whitworth Park Darley Dale before returning home. Thanks to Janette, our WI Team Member, who organised this outing for us.
14 June 2023 - Today at Baslow WI...
Today Baslow WI members enjoyed a talk by Alan Salt entitled 'From Creamery to Cracker' all about the history of cheese making in and around Derbyshire.
After the tea break we had a very generous cheese tasting session followed by WI news and information. More than half of the members wore something green for Green Month and looked fab! Our President apologised that she only had green, skimpy, pyjamas but managed to look elegant with a large green table cloth wrapped around in the form of a sarong! Lorna W and Judith P were presented with an orchid as a small token of our appreciation for their hard work over many years as they have now stepped back for their roles as Team Member and Village Hall Representative. Sue P and Catherine O have taken their place on the various committees. Our thanks go to all of them. |
8 June 2023 - First of many? 💚
June is 'Green Month' and Vikki's plants are starting to grow and produce flowers and fruits. Here is her first cucumber of the season. 💚
7 June 2023 - A card from the King!
Theo, the grandson of one of our members, sent a picture to King Charles after the death of Queen Elizabeth. Today he received this beautiful thank you card. What a fabulous thing for a five year old to have and keep!
6 June 2023 - Team Tuesday Nordic Walkers @Nordic Walking Derbyshire
It is really great to see Team Tuesday expanding now that Izzy has introduced the walkers she met and instructed in British Nordic Walking at the Chesterfield Walking Festival recently. Today's walk was around the Millthorpe area, mainly off road through woodland, fields and on footpaths and bridleways. Thanks Izzy, it was a great walk and great company too. New walkers are always welcome, do join us on Tuesdays at 10am. Our meeting place is added to the WI web diary and the group has a WhatsApp account you can join if you wish. Go on... Give it a go!

3 June 2023 - Ashford-in-the-Water Festival, Harry Potter flies in! 🧙
Kate is a former Baslow WI President and this year is sharing the secretarial role. This week she has been busy preparing her display in the church at Ashford-in-the-Water, near Bakewell, for the festival. The theme this year is 'Children's Books'. Look at the detail in her work, the Quidditch Towers, the hat and Quidditch Stick and the fantastic labels on the potion jars not forgetting the fabulous flower arrangements! Well done Kate a brilliant job. The festival is on from 3 - 10 June so if you are around do pop in and have a look. Why not take some more photos and send them to us for our Out & About Photo Club page? We'd love to have them.
