Each member also receives an emailed birthday wish on the day. It's a good way of keeping in touch with members past and present. At the same time Gill's recipes of the month are posted on social media and members of Baslow WI who subscribe to our Federation Newsletter, 'Link' have it delivered to their inbox.
28 September 2018 - Baslow Bikers

They met at Clowne and cycled 23 miles along country lanes and the Chesterfield Canal stopping at Turner Wood for coffee and then on to Worksop where they had their picnic lunch and returned to Clowne via Thorpe Salvin and Harthill. Although much of the ride was along the canal there were some hills and the total elevation recorded was 948 feet. A great day out. 🚴♀️

What skills and lovely to see.

Happy Derbyshire Day everyone! If you didn't know already this is our flag and has been since 2006 when it was adopted. The colours represent Derbyshire's green countryside and blue rivers and reservoirs. A Tudor Rose is in the centre and has been the county badge since the 1470s.

17 September 2018 - Baslow Bikers in WI Sports Week
Six Baslow Bikers met at Parsley Hay for a 25 mile bike ride on the High Peak Trail, Midshires Way and The Pennine Bridleway. This was not a cycle without incident! Ann had a crashing fall in a tunnel resulting in some damage to her bike which luckily the men Bikers were able to fix and the ride continued. The next nuisance was that two cafes were closed where they had hoped to buy tea so they picnicked with cold drinks at the National Stone Centre, Cromford. The last problem encountered was that Muriel's bike ran out of battery power so she had to resort to 'woman power', luckily there were not too many hills to cycle at that point. On a positive note they were blessed with a lovely warm day, nothing was broken and they came home cheerful and looking forward to more Baslow Biker get-togethers! ☺️
15 September 2018 - Today is the start of WI Sports Week
14 September 2018 - Friday's Weekly Nordic Walk
At today's walk seven Baslow WI members joined their Nordic Walking instructor, Phill, at the regular meeting place, National Trust Longshaw Estate. Their tuition session was a mix of improving style and use of poles, interval training and mindfulness, plus of course plenty of chatter! The weather was kind to them as the walk took place between two showers of rain and the autumn sun was glorious over the Peak Park.

12 September 2018 - W I Monthly Meeting
Great meeting today Baslow Village Hall was filled to the brim with members and visitors to hear David Brocklehurst talking about Medical Detection Dogs. David came along with his own dog, Alice, who does a great job promoting this charity. Our members, as always, supported the raffle for Medical Detection Dogs and also donated items to the Elm Foundation, formerly Chesterfield Women's Refuge. Baslow members provided us with delicious tea and cakes at the break and after WI news and information from our President, Christine, we heard from Kate about her recent visit to Denman, the WI college in Oxfordshire. Kate also gave us an update on Baslow WI's 2019 centenary plans. All confirmed events are on the Diary Page of this website take a peep there is lots going on!
8 September 2018 - Book Lovers a Baslow WI Book Club
The WI Book Lovers Book Club has been in existence for 16 months now and is still doing very well. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month, at the homes of Jacqueline Clark and Angela Swindells, who kindly host us as they both live in Baslow. We are a small dedicated group of eight lovely, interesting ladies. We all contribute to suggesting books to read, which lead us to read an eclectic range of books. I enjoy leading the group and providing the questions, everyone joins in with their thoughts and opinions which always leads to a lively, interesting and informative discussion by all.

21 August 2018 - Planning for our Centenary
In 2019 our WI will be 100 years old. We have a small sub-committee working on planning a programme for our centenary year. Today some of them went on an evening walk from The Grouse Inn, Grindleford through the Longshaw Estate and over White Edge Moor. This is a three mile relatively easy walk and should suit many of our members. The evening meal at The Grouse Inn was excellent so this will definitely be added to our diary for next year. Take a peep to see what we have already confirmed on the Diary Page of this website.

17 August 2018 - A walk to the 'Psycho House' for the Friday Nordic Walkers! 👻
Eight regulars from our Friday Nordic Walking Group met with Instructor Phill today at the National Trust, Longshaw, and enjoyed a new and very different walk on to White Edge Moor to White Edge Lodge nicknamed by locals, The Psycho House! It has been renovated to a high standard and is now let out as a holiday home by the National Trust. Each week we are learning new techniques using the poles to give us more stability on uneven ground and more impulsion on level and uphill paths with various routines working different muscles throughout our bodies. In our group we have a new member with Parkinson's disease who is progressing extremely well. We would welcome any other Parkinson's sufferers and hope to expand our involvement with local support organisations throughout the year.

Two Baslow WI Nordic Walkers, Ann and Gill met with Instructor Phill and members from his Chinley Group for a walk to Grindleford via Padley Gorge and back. Thanks to Phill for arranging this extra walk for us all, it was good to meet walkers from other parts of Derbyshire who obviously enjoy their instruction sessions as we do.
10 August 2018 - Baslow Nordic Walking Group (Baslow Belles)
WHAT HAPPENED? The weather changed and 12 of us arrived at Longshaw in a heavy downpour of rain. Unperturbed we all got our parking tickets and Instructor Phill introduced us to Lorraine, a potential Trainee Instructor. She had come to see how difficult groups are handled by the well practised Phill! We worked on a routine of 10 x 10 x 10 (technical!) and were praised with 'Looking good - lovin it' from Phill! Ten minutes into the session we were blessed with glorious sunshine and after a good workout ended as usual with a nice cuppa at the National Trust Cafe.
We now look forward to our extra sessions on Sunday where Phill will lead two different walks. See Diary Page of this website for full details and do join us sometime. It's good for the body, mind and soul - so we are told! |

2 August 2018 - Looking glorious, the Golden Gates Roundabout in Baslow
To celebrate 90 years of the WI in Baslow the Duke of Devonshire planted an oak tree on the Chatsworth Golden Gates Roundabout at the entrance to Baslow Village. This year Baslow Garden Society has planted wild flowers all around the oak, this month they are looking super spectacular. See the page on this website dedicated to the 90th celebrations. As you can see the tree is doing very well thanks to Jane, our Roving Reporter, who watered it during its first few months in dry weather.

A few of us gathered on a very hot day to learn a new technique for Nordic Walking in heat, as well as practising our breathing when going uphill. It was a little cooler by the pond where we gathered for a group photograph. After our cup of tea, Phill demonstrated some exercises with bands to strengthen the biceps, one of the few muscles not exercised by Nordic Walking.

Fischer's Baslow Hall was the meeting place for the WI Lunch Club July meeting. Most of the members and friends enjoyed a garden tour from Max Fischer and his two gardeners. The gardens look wonderful all year around but today they were splendid and still full of colour despite the dry weather we have been experiencing. A glass of Prosecco was served with canapés outside and in the dining room a two course meal followed by coffee and sweet delights were enjoyed, all beautifully served! Thanks to the staff who looked after us so well and for Lorna who organised the outing for us.

29 June 2018 - Nordic Walking instruction
Ten Baslow WI members and friends met together with Phill Alcock our British Nordic Walking Instructor for their weekly session at the lovely Longshaw Estate today. It was a glorious Derbyshire summer day, harsh sunlight made photography hard. Everyone enjoyed the session which started with 20 minutes of 'Mindfulness' walking, no talking allowed. (Difficult for WI members!) This was followed by interval training on the level and on slopes. (Plenty of chat resumed!) We worked on steps using our poles in various ways to assist and make safe our climbing and descending. All useful stuff for future WI walk.

At WISA today we were pleased to meet Janice who contacted us via this website and is interested in joining Baslow WI. We look forward to welcoming her again to our next meeting in July. Ice cream from the Italian Restaurant across the road was enjoyed by many of our group! What a treat on a lovely hot, sunny day!

8 June 2018 - Nordic Walking, National Trust, Longshaw
Our Br. Nordic Walking instructor, Phill, gave us a challenge to walk without talking for five minutes using walking with poles as a 'mindfulness exercise'. We all agreed it was very relaxing and stress relieving especially if we did it when walking alone ie on the way to and from work. After that we were free to natter away on our way to the pond, looking wonderful in the todays light. There were midges around so next time we must use insect repellant!
8 June 2018 - World Oceans Day
On this day and every day WI members all over the world will be thinking of ways to save our oceans and remembering our 2017 NFWI resolution regarding 'Plastic Soup'.
6 June 2018 - Report from one of our members regarding Book Lovers
Every first Wednesday of the month our most select band of readers meet at either Jacqueline or Angela's house in Baslow for two hours of lively discussion, tea and biscuits. Sandra Marshall is our excellent leader, providing the group with a whole list of thought provoking questions which must take her a long time to prepare and is much appreciated by all the group. We all contribute and no one person dominates; we often have different opinions but this leads to lively discussion. The books are chosen by the members and are an eclectic mix, we have read 'The Gift of Rain,' 'The Siege,' ' 44 Scotland Street ' and our next book is 'Nutshell'. Of course these are just a selection as the group has been meeting for well over a year. We all enjoy meeting and are always surprised that we can discuss a book for two hours!

Today 15 Baslow WI members joined a taster session led by Phill Alcock a British Nordic Walking Instructor. British Nordic Walking is a not for profit organisation and is a member of the International Federation. Phill told us that Nordic Walking has proven health benefits and turns walking into an entirely new experience. It can be enjoyed by virtually anyone including individuals with mobility issues. This session was enjoyed by everyone and we were all keen to go to another session which Phill has agreed to lead on 8 December at 2pm from Baslow Village Hall.

20 November 2017 - ACWW Christmas Market Day
Eight Baslow WI members drove to Derbyshire Federation Head Quarters, Derby today to attend the ACWW Christmas Market Day. They learnt about the work of Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). The speakers were excellent and gave us fundraising ideas. They explained how our money can create opportunities for women to exercise more power through being better informed and being given the necessary tools to carry out the changes they want for themselves and future generations. The projects sponsored by ACWW are very varied eg buying and rearing goats for sale as meat, leaning how to grow fruit and vegetables and rope making. The ACWW/International sub-committee at Derbyshire always put together and excellent day with coffee on arrival, a light lunch and a drink and cake before leaving. WIs were encouraged to appoint an ACWW Representative to keep members informed and encourage them to support this, the WI's international charity. At Baslow WI Judith C and Lorna share this role.
17 November 2017 - Baslow Bikers
Baslow Bikers met today at Parsley Hay near Monyash and took two different routes. Two went to Tissington via Carsington and Bradbourne on the High Peak Trail and four went directly to Tissington Village for a picnic lunch and tea with cake at the Tea Rooms next to Tissington Hall. All six returned together to Parsley Hay just before sunset for the last photo of the day!

15 November 2017 - WI Lunch Club and walk
Three Baslow WI members decided to do the short circular walk from Eyam via Stoney Middleton before meeting the other Lunch Club members today. This was a perfect morning for a walk, mild and no wind they revised their history knowledge about the Plague Village, Eyam and the Boundary Stone.

Seventeen Darlings gathered together for a delicious lunch at the Eyam Tea Rooms where we were looked after extremely efficiently and everyone enjoyed good drinks and food and as usual we were the biggest and noisiest table!

8 November 2017 - Baslow WI Monthly Meeting
Baslow Village Hall was full to the brim with WI members and friends who had come to see Jo Thomspon from 'More Pretty Things' a specialist gift wrapping service. Jo gave us a great presentation and some fantastic ideas of how to wrap gifts professionally and with economic use of paper and ribbon. After a tea break with 'melt in the mouth cakes' we heard WI and local news before having our very popular 'Show & Tell' this time with a wartime theme to fit with Remembrance Day this weekend. Judy presented a great Bring & Buy table for us - best shopping for miles and our members did us proud donating items for the Chesterfield Women's Refuge.

We were welcomed and looked after by Justine and her team who always do a wonderful job when we visit.
