28 May 2022 - Sad news
The sad news came through today that Mary Everard, a member of Baslow WI has died after suffering cancer for many years. She died peacefully at Brookcroft House Care Home, Sheffield. A card has been sent on behalf of all of us at WI to her niece Stella. Mary was an excellent golfer, a dog lover, wonderful cook and she enjoyed her garden and walking. She will be greatly missed here at WI.

Watch out for the next date when the 'Friends Walk' will take place or contact us and advertise your own walk on our diary page.

18 May 2022 - WI Lunch Club
At this month's Lunch Club, Kath was the member who organised the visit. She welcomed twelve WI members to Charlie's Bistro in Baslow. Charlie's is always a favourite with our members, it ticks so many boxes, it's local, friendly, the food is always excellent and always cooked by the owner himself, Charlie! Thanks Charlie and thanks Kath for booking it for us.

12 May 2022 - Marion's River Walk
Six Baslow Darlings and two very well behaved K9s, ventured off on a walk with Marion today along the River Derwent from Calver to Froggatt. It was a lovely level walk for a spring morning. Six went off for a coffee after the walk but one had to go home to get on with WI duties following yesterday's Annual Meeting! 😇
11 May 2022 - One Darling goes to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party
It might not have been as glamorous as it could have been had the sun shined but it didn't spoil the fun. Janette and Paul queued for an hour in the rain to get into the Palace grounds, but made friends some of them WI members whilst doing so! The gardens looked fabulous and so did Janette in her lovely outfit bought especially for the occasion with Paul in a three piece suit looking so smart. Thanks for sharing your special day with us here at Baslow WI. Many congratulations to Paul on being awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen's 2021 New Years Honours list for over 30 years voluntary service to the community in Derbyshire.
11 May 2022 - WI Monthly Meeting
Today's Annual Meeting at Baslow WI was vey well supported by members, we had two visitors and one new member, welcome Annette! We were pleased to meet Charlotte Swinhoe from Weston Park Cancer Care who received our cheque for £2,250 raised by members for the Presidents Charity. Liz Mangle, our WI Adviser, helped us through the Annual Meeting and Judith Barton was elected as President for a third time. Alison and Marion left our WI Team, they were given plants for their garden as a thank you. Janette and Karon were nominated and will now join the Team. Donations to the Elm Foundation were generous as always, this time we had suggested cleaning products for when the women move into a home of their own. Lorna sold tickets for our ACWW fundraiser a fashion show by 'blanc Occasions', Chesterfield. Kate led the discussion regarding the NFWI resolution concerning women and girls with ASD and ADHD. Our vote will be taken to the NFWI Annual Meeting in Liverpool next month by our delegate from Beeley WI. It was good to see Anna back at the meeting and driving herself after serious illnesses. The meeting ended with an easy and loud (!) Shout-out Quiz put together by Ann and Caroline.
10 May 2022 - Team Tuesday
Today's Nordic Walk with Izzy's Team Tuesday started at Stoney Middleton, passing the "Roman Baths" before starting the steep track up hill towards Eyam. Lovely views were admired from the top before the descent towards Grindleford then Froggatt Bridge, then following the river Derwent to Calver and back to the car park. Four miles in all but seemed more because of the elevation. Lovely sunshine most of the way except for one heavy shower near the end of the walk. Good exercise, good company and fresh air was enjoyed by all.

6 May 2022 - A Friday walk...
Three Baslow "Darlings" enjoyed a walk in Chatsworth Park today, past this lovely herd of deer which calmly watched as they went by. After a welcome hot drink in the courtyard, the return journey meant negotiating some of the fences and jumps being installed for the upcoming Horse Trials. Glad to say there were no falls or refusals by the time they'd completed the course!

Overall winners were Repton WI at the Barrow on Trent venue, congratulations everyone the questions were super hard! 🙁
28 April 2022 - Friends of Chatsworth Garden Walk
Nine Baslow WI members who are friends of Chatsworth met for their monthly garden walk today. In the kitchen garden they were interested in ideas for using pruned branches to make 'wigwam' style supports and homegrown at Chatsworth bamboo for climbing plants. The garden is looking extremely tidy and they were all amazed at the change since last month. Next month will be the same everything is growing at a great rate right now. Join us next time if you can. Details will be on the web diary soon.
Jane, our Roving Reporter writes... 'No one recognised this beautiful old tree but the gnarled bark and twisting stem resembled an Olive tree, whilst the blossom was definitely Pear . Hence the 'Poliver Tree'! We’re going to check out the fruit this Autumn.'

25 April 2022 - WI Walk
Today Baslow WI's President, Judith, led a fabulous 5 mile walk from Strawberry Lees Lane, Sheffield 17 around The Totley Moss Woodland Reserve and Blacka Moor on the border between South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. The walk was extremely peaceful, rough underfoot in places but not too difficult. The wood sculptures near the start of the walk were truly amazing and a wonderful surpirse, almost a shock! At the coffee stop the walkers were high above where they started and enjoyed panoramic views from Dore right over Sheffield.

13 April 2022 - WI Easter Meeting
The speaker, James Ellson, had a career in the police force before he became a full time small holder of five acres of land at Hayfield, Derbyshire. He and his wife have become self sufficient in growing fruit and vegetables as well as keeping chickens and rearing turkeys for Christmas. He spoke about the effects of climate change and how important it is to reduce our carbon footprint. He gave us tips on growing our own produce and how to reduce our carbon footprint if we weren’t able to. He also picked the winner of the Easter Bonnet parade. Well done Iris!
At today's meeting we were pleased to welcome three new members Chris, Laura and Joyce. We hope they will enjoy everything on offer at Baslow WI and the wider WI.
Thanks as always go to our members for their generous donations to The Elm Foundation.

30 March 2022 - DFWI Taster Day at Hayes Conference Centre (The new Denman?)
Today was a first for Derbyshire Federation as the Residential & Training Team (RATs) organised a Taster Day at The Hayes Conference Centre at Swanwick near Alfreton. Members chose 3 out of 4 courses which were, Life Story Writing, Photography, Art and Family History. Three Baslow members, Ann, Christine and Judith attended as 'students' and Lorna was involved in the planning and running of the event. It was a HUGE success. Everyone had a great day for a reasonable price, £60, which included lunch, tea/coffee and scones and jam before 'home time'! Thanks to the RATs. Great job! It's not Denman but willl be an excellent replacement.
29 March 2022 - Nordic Walkers
Today seven 'Team Tuesday' members joined Izzy for a 4.5mile walk from National Trust Longshaw, towards Padley Gorge, Surprise Corner and back over some steep and rocky terraine into Longshaw. An excellent walk in three seasons of weather! Not a problem as everyone was dressed for it. Next week our walk will be from Baslow Village Hall, meeting Izzy at 10am. New walkers welcome.
Lorna led a different group of walkers starting at 10.30am. She says...
'Six of us did today’s stroll at Longshaw. We saw the volunteers, with a National Trust Warden, burning scrub and fallen branches.
Gill seems to have used her magic wand to chop down a tree! Lots of chat with stories told before we retired to the cafe.'

After a frosty start it was a beautiful day for Izzy's Team Tuesday Nordic Walk. Starting at Longshaw car park, down past the pond and across to the top of Padley Gorge and along the old packhorse route before climbing to the top of Mother Cap. With glorious views (and a very chilling wind) it was a bit of a scramble down the rocks and across the moor to cross the stream and head up to the Fox House Inn, where some of the group enjoyed a very nice lunch.

3 January 2022 - The Baslow Book Worms, a WI Book Club...
Report from Baslow Book Worms 🐛🐛
As we were unable to meet in person as planned, Kate kindly set up a Zoom meeting and 5 of us managed a get together to discuss our last book. Over Christmas and January we read "The Women at Hitler’s Table" by Rosella Postorino. The book prompted some diverse views and stimulated a good discussion. It is a novel, inspired by the true story of Hitler’s food tasters, ten women, seemingly randomly chosen by the SS, to taste the food to be served to Hitler and to protect him from poison. The women were seen as completely expendable. The story is set in Gross-Partsch, East Germany 1943, near to Hitler’s hidden headquarters and its main character, Rosa, has been taken there by her husband from Berlin. She lives with her in-laws and he is fighting on the Russian front. Frightened, alone, trusting no-one, she is unable to make friends with the other women, and is painfully aware the every mouthful of food she tastes could be her last. The atmosphere generated by the language in the book is cold and hostile, and we learn how the characters develop coping mechanisms to just get by on a day to day basis. |
The group had very split views on the book:
Some felt that they were unable to feel sympathy for the characters, and some of the relationships seemed unlikely, whilst others were more empathetic to the main characters. The ending, to some of us didn’t quite come together whilst others felt it was probably very realistic and true to life after the end of the war. The book is a translation, and we all felt that this was possibly a reason why some of the phrases and language used were, at times, alien and difficult for us to appreciate fully. We all agreed it was an intriguing comment on Hitler’s regime, and an aspect of it which non of us knew anything about. We were pleased that we had read it, but we had not all necessarily enjoyed it.

26 January 2022 - WISA
Today our WI Social Afternoon was well attended by WI members. As usual members got together and chatted sharing news from family and friends. Some brought along their projects to work on others just enjoyed a chance to catch up over a cuppa! Team Members brought a selection of the clothing donated by David Nieper and Vikki, our WI Treasurer, reported that £624 has been collected for Weston Park Cancer Charity from the sale of these items. Lorna brought along three sacks of knitted and crocheted items donated by Jayne's Aunty Joy and her friend Margaret. These will be shared between local charities we support, the Elm Foundation and the Padley Project. A letter will be sent thanking Aunty Joy for these very generous donations.
25 January 2022 - Nordic Walking
Today, Linda led 'Team Tuesday' on a walk starting at Ladybower Reservoir near the large sink hole which is very impressive at this time of year due to the high water levels in the Rivers Derwent and Ashop that feed the reservoir. Our Nordic Walking Instructor, Izzy, is unable to walk at the moment as she is recovering from COVID. We send her our best wishes for a quick recovery and hope to see her soon. 🌸
23 January 2022 - Donations for WI charities will be revealed on Wednesday!
Three large bags filled with knitted and crocheted items to be donated to the causes supported by Baslow WI. The bags were given to us by a member’s Aunty Joy and her friend. Thanks Aunty Joy! The bags will be opened at WISA on Wednesday and we will publish photos here and on Facebook of what they contain. Come along and have a look! 🧶

Walk One: Five Nordic Walkers and sheepdog, Merlot, joined our leader Linda today for a fabulous, frosty five and a half mile walk from Thornbridge Hall to Bakewell and back onto the Monsall Trail. Walk Two: Lorna and Lesley met at the green in Baslow and enjoyed a walk into Chatsworth park spending time watching a herd of deer collected under a tree.

15 January 2022 - Introduction to Bee Keeping Day...
Today Judith Orchard, one of the speakers at our 'Great Big Green Wednesday' held an introduction to bee keeping at Youlgrave Village Hall together with Mike Cross. 🐝
Our Roving Reporter Jane tells us: 'I went along to cook lunch for the twelve novice bee keepers on Judith’s course at Youlgreave. Luckily lunch was quiche, pizza, chips, salad and pork pie, so not too tricky! Judith did me a big favour on Green Day by giving a Bee talk, at very short notice, in The Baslow Community Orchard for us. One good turn deserves another.' 👩🍳 |
13 January 2022 - New Year Walk, Linacre Reservoirs

Five of the walkers then headed off to The Peacock for lunch before heading off for home. Our next walk in planned for 10 February from The Bridge Inn at Calver, see WI diary for full details.

12 January 2022 - New Year Meeting
Well the Darlings certainly kicked 2022 off with a bang! First we had a wonderful speaker in David Adams telling us the history of the gardens at Chatsworth and other Devonshire owned properties and the work of Joseph Paxton. Then we had our super January Sale with the garments donated by David Nieper raising over £400 for our President's Charity, Weston Park Cancer. As always our members did us proud and donated items for the Elm Foundation. These are now being delivered by Karen or members of her sub-team Liz, Muriel and Sue, (see photo). Christine stood in for Judy today on the Bring & Buy and sold some wonderful homemade bags, cards etc. We were thrilled to welcome six new members today we will look forward to seeing them on walks and outings in the weeks and months to come. Thanks to everyone who helped at this busy first meeting of the year.
Note: A hearing aid was found outside Baslow Village Hall today, it is in the Hall's kitchen cupboard lost property box. |

16 December 2021 - Thanks from the Elm Foundation
Karen has taken over from Lorna as our Elm Foundation (formerly Chesterfield Women's Refuge) Coordinator, she is working with Muriel and Sue. As we get quite a lot of donations most months at Baslow WI, help is needed displaying them in the Village Hall and then packing the goods into Karen's car. Lorna introduced Karen to Helen at The Elm and this email as now been received:

Today members of Baslow WI met together in Baslow Village Hall for a traditional Christmas turkey meal cooked and served by Jo's Pantry. The lunch was followed by a meeting where members of the sub-teams summarised the work they do. Donations for the Elm Foundation were extremely generous and looked fantastic in and around the Christmas Tree. We were so pleased to meet Catherine, a visitor today, who is going to join at the next meeting.

Generaous donations for the Elm Foundations in and around the Village Hall's Christmas tree...
Baslow WI President, Judith and Correspondence Secretary, Ann placed a Christmas wreath on the grave of The 11th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire today before our WI Christmas meeting. The Duke and Duchess were great supporters of the WI in Derbyshire and we do not forget their kindness and how welcoming they were to us. The wreath was purchased at Bradders Nursery in Old Brampton.

At the Team Meeting today our President, Judith, was presented with a Christmas arrangement from the Team as a thank you for all she does for Baslow WI. It's been a tough job through the pandemic with no face to face meetings but she took it on and has done us proud. Thanks 'Darling'. 🎄💚

30 November 2021 - Nordic walking with Team Tuesday
Nordic Walkers in Team Tuesday walked from Holmesfield today on a circular but very wet route, the snow has suddenly all melted overnight. Rewarded by seeing very free range eggs and muddy ducks at the farm then a heron standing by the stream. Also spotted this recycled sign now acting as a dog gate near the stile! Ended with a welcome hot drink and delicious soup in the Angel.

29 November 2021 - WI Subscriptions 2022
Good news! WI membership subscriptions will not increase next year. They remain at £44 and are due in April. New members joining later in the year will pay a reduced rate on a sliding scale.
25 November 2021 - Computer Cafe in Baslow!
Today the DFWI Media Hub Team hosted a Computer Cafe in Baslow Village Hall. It was well supported by Baslow members and some from Darley Dale. Information was shared regarding taking and sending photos, searching websites, loading Apps, dictating emails and texts (hilarious) and a new Facebook page was created for a WI. Useful stuff, as well as good fun! Thanks to Judith, Baslow WI's President, who very kindly took charge of the kitchen providing refreshments.
24 November 2021 - Today at Baslow WI...
At this session we welcomed Sue Sheldon from Age UK Derbyshire who gave us a 'Whistle-Stop Workshop on Falls Awareness'. Members and friends learnt about the causes and consequences of falls and ways to minimise some of these. They shared ideas on prevention of falls. A worthwhile session for members of all ages.
Here are some of the crafts being worked on by our members, see more on the 'Craft work' page of this website.
Note: WISA is not just for crafts it's for everyone. Come along for a catch up with friends with a cuppa and a cake or biscuit. No charge even! 4th Wednesday of every month except December. 🤶🏻🎅

21 & 22 November 2021 - London visit...
A group of nine WI members and partners joined 'London Tours' for an overnight visit to London. They saw Pretty Woman the Musical at the Savoy Theatre starring Aimie Atkinson and Danny Mac alongside a fabulous cast. After the show they checked into their rooms at The Waldorf Hotel and went out to dinner at Sarastros. They enjoyed a wonderfully leisurely meal with entertainment from musicians and opera singers. What a day! The following day they joined Gerry from London Tours for a walking tour around Covent Garden and then went their separate ways to visit churches, galleries and some went on the water bus to Greenwich. This was a great visit they will be booking with London Tours again without a doubt!
19 November 2021 - A testing walk for the WI Walking Group!
Seven Baslow WI members met today for a four mile walk from the main car park at NT Longshaw led by Ann. They walked around the pond, up to Surprise Corner, for the fabulous views across the National Park around Hathersage. After a coffee stop they headed along Millstone Edge for a steep short climb to Over Owler Tor then decending to Mother Cap. Next, down again over rocky terrain back into Longshaw. A short but challenging walk. No falls, no submissions but knock out views! Everyone enjoyed the walk especially our little cannine friend! What a cutie! 🐾

15 November 2021 - ACWW Winter Supporters Day
Two of our members, Ann and Lorna enjoyed their day at Derbyshire House supporting ACWW. As always the trading tables were loaded and very tempting! The speakers from around the UK and Afrodita Roman, the European President from Romania, were excellent. Attending these days is useful as we share fundraising ideas. Lorna reported that Baslow WI has raised over £500 from the 'Walk the World Treasure Hunt', donations given by members at teatime during WI meetings and from generous donations of ticket money given when our planned Fashon Show by 'blanc' had to be postponed due to the pandemic. We hope that members will continue to support our International Charity during the coming year by donating at least £1 at teatime, attending the Fashion Show when it happens in 2022 and joining in our next 'Walk the World'.

12 November 2021 - The Mouse Family...
Baslow WI enjoys following the Facebook page, 'The Mouse Family Who Live by the Brambles'. Gez Robinson, the creator of the page has written a book of the same name. He contacted us via our website after noticing our 'likes' and 'shares' on his Facebook page! Gez has very kindly sent us five of his books to use as fundraisers for our President's Weston Park Cancer Charity in Sheffield, also one to share with our members. Thank you Gez, you are a star! 🐭🐭

9 November 2021 - Team Tuesday
Our Nordic Walkers met with Izzy at The Robin Hood, Baslow today for a good walk into Chatsworth only slowed down by the massive wall stiles. Some of the group wished to go to the Christmas Market and walk back via the Hunting Tower other walked back along the river, eventually retracing their steps over the stiles. An excellent morning's walk for good exercise and good company too! A very kind gentleman took our group photo today so we are all in it!

5 November 2021
Forty-two Baslow WI members celebrated 102 years of the WI in Baslow. Sickleholme Golf Club was the venue for their celebration lunch. They enjoyed welcome drinks whilst taking in the wonderful view across the golf course before moving into the dining area. Our President, Judith, gave toasts to Baslow WI on this BIG birthday and The Queen. June shared her birthday with the WI and was given one of Christine's beautiful handmade sunflower cards. Two courses of nicely presented roasted meat or salmon were served with a fabulous choice of vegetables. Desserts to die for followed! Coffee or tea came next and sadly it was time to say goodbye.

Apologies to those members who I failed to capture, I'll catch you another day! Ann 😊

21 October 2021 - ACWW fundraising Treasure Hunt!
Today ten Baslow WI members joined together for a Treasure Hunt plotted by Chatsworth Health Club. The route was short but the clues were not as easy to follow as they first thought! Time has passed since the Health Club did the Hunt and the answers were no longer all clear, we could even say they had vanished! A good walk in lovely autumn sunshine though followed by a nice lunch at the Cavendish Club. This was a fund raising event for Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) we would have liked to see more members joining in. Donations welcome! Scroll down to see the questions and answers. Vikki, our Treasurer, reports that donations from the 10 walkers amounted to £185 and our ACWW rep, Lorna, reports that another member handed in a box with of Pennies for Friendship with £3.78 in. Well done friends this is great, let's hope more members will add to this amount now. Thanks everyone. 💚

20 October 2021 - DFWI day out...
Kate says...
'This was a great day out meeting members from other WIs. In the morning Miranda showed us how to pot up a 'bulb lasagne', we then made our own so hopefully in the spring my bulbs will come up.
For lunch we had a lovely Shepherd’s Pie and mixed veg followed by a berry compote and cream. Nancy Hawksworth, ready for Christmas, showed one of her ideas for a Christmas present which included homemade jams and pickle. As always with Nancy she gave us plenty of tips and ideas including the recipe sheet and samples of the goodies to eat at the end.'
Thanks Kate for the report and photos.

20 October 2021 - Lunch Club is back...
Today ten members from Baslow WI will be attending Lunch Club for the first time since the start of the pandemic. They will be returning to The Maynard Hotel after a long break. Things really are starting to get back to normal for us at Baslow WI. It's going to feel different as we no longer have to choose from the menu in advance but this keeps it more flexible for individuals so not a bad thing. Thanks Jane for organising this one for us.

18 October 2021 - Baslow Bikers
Six Baslow eBikers met at the field car park near the Hassop Bookstore for their 17 mile cycle today. The route took them to Millers Dale, Tideswell, Litton, Cressbrook and Ashford-in-the-Water. Rain came earlier than forecast, they stoped in Tideswell for a cofee break and were invited into the church porch for shelter. They continued on to Ashford where they had their picnic lunch by the 'Bottom Pump' at Sheepwash Bridge. The Bikers are hoping to get a few more cycles before the winter creeps up on them. Maybe a Christmas ride, of course with some decorations on their bikes!

16 October 2021 - Chesterfield
Darling Jane our Roving Reporter has been into our the local Market Town, Chesterfield, today. She's photographed the amazing carpet of red knitted poppies climbing up the Town Hall and also the Knife Sculpture outside the St Mary & All Saints Church known locally at The Crooked Spire Church. 🌿🌺🌿
15 October 2021 - Hardwick Hall
Four Baslow WI members met at the Hardwick Hall Cafe for a coffee before their tour of the house this morning. There was so much to see repaired tapestries compared favourably with the originals, fabulous paintings and very interesting and extremely entertaining guides to talk to. A bit too much 'down to earth information' at times! Educational and fun is the category for today's visit. The 'Darlings' were lucky with the weather, the gardens still have plenty of colour to enjoy, highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
13 October 2021 - Monthly Meeting
We were pleased to welcome Ian as our speaker today, he is a personal friend of Judith, our President. He gave us a funny and interesting talk about his life on 'Swansong', his narrow boat. Members enjoyed the meeting, and were enthusiastic to sign up for the 102nd birthday lunch at Sickleholme Golf Club on 5 November and also for the Christmas Lunch in Baslow Village Hall on 8 December. We had a busy 'Halloween Bring & Buy' and raffle and a great selection of cakes at teatime! We agreed not to take on a allotment, but members are keen to keep supporting the Elm Foundation with monthly donations. Karen has kindly offered to coordinate this taking over from Lorna who has done it now for many years. A busy but enjoyable meeting. Thanks everyone.
10 October 2021 - WI programmes
BASLOW WI PROGRAMME: Judith and Vikki, our President and Treasurer at Baslow WI have done a great job booking speakers right through to December 2022. Ann our Correspondence Secretary has printed the programmes, cut and folded them ready for collection by members at our meeting on Wednesday. 7 October 2021 - Baslow Bookworms a WI book group...
Report from Bookworms: Jambusters by Julie Summers
This month our book was Jambusters by Julie Summers, it proved to be an enlightening read which dealt with the part played by ordinary WI members during the war years. The book was extremely well researched and written, offering an enormous amount of information taken from first-hand accounts of WI members. As a factual record of the time, it was very interesting; touching on the interaction of WI hierarchy with the government and how that impacted on the WI families and their contribution to the war effort, also adding the touches of everyday life going on under very challenging conditions. Definitely a book to read showing the tremendous contribution made by the WI during the war years. Next month our book is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Kate Treves |
5 October 2021 - DFWI Federation Meeting
Baslow WI members attended the Federation Meeting at the Winding Wheel today. Some volunteered to act as stewards on the one-way system on the stairs to the ballroom where all the sales tables and stands were so we didn't get them photographed. Thanks to them for helping at short notice. The sub-committee chairs did a great job at informing the audience about what is planned for us in the near future, they have all been busy throughout the pandemic. The morning speaker was Sue Wall, chair of the Independent Monitioring Board at Foston Hall prison where we have a Derbyshire WI. She gave an interesting and enlightening talk about her work at the prison. In the afternoon we all had a treat listening to Amanda Owen, The Yorkshire Shepherdess. She told us about life on the farm with 9 children and a husband! It was obvious that she had many fans at the Winding Wheel today! Julia was chuffed to get a selfie with her at the book signing. A great day out.
1 October 2021
This slide will be used on our social media platforms to wish our members with birthdays this month a very happy birthday. On their special day members will usually receive a greeting via email sent by our correspondence secretary.
29 September 2021 - Harvest Festival at St Anne's Church, Baslow
Baslow WI members Iris and Kate have made a wonderful job of arranging flowers for St Anne's Church Harvest Festival services. Baslow School will be in the church on Thursday 30 September for the school service and on Sunday 3 October it will be the Harvest Festival for the parish. The arrangements are stunning, thank you for sharing your photos with us for the website and Facebook page.

28 September 2021 - Team Tuesday
Izzy's Nordic Walking Derbyshire, 'Team Tuesday' met at Goose Green, Baslow, for a four-mile walk into Chatsworth Park, across to Edensor Village and back along the river to Chatsworth House and eventually the Green. A lovely walk on a mild autumn day. Thanks Izzy! Lorna and Gill walked a shorter route up to Chatsworth House and back over the parkland.
25 September 2021 - Help!
Walk leaders are always needed! If you know a nice walk, long or short and would like to invite other WI members to join you on it one morning or afternoon, it's easy just email: [email protected]
Include the date, meeting place and time and we will advertise it for you. Not just walks bike rides too! Do check the WI diary first so that events don't clash! Thanks. We look forward to hearing from you. |
23 September 2021 - Last of the summer colour
This rose bush was part of a presentation basket received by Jane S a few years ago. She has transplanted it twice and it continues to bloom. How lovely that she has been able to keep it going so long and is brightening up her balcony even in autumn. 💕
22 September 2021 - Great Big Green Wednesday! 💚♻️
The Great Big Green Wednesday was a great big success! We thank the Green Team, Alison, Jane and Janette for their hard work organising it. Over £200 was made in the day which will be divided between Baslow WI and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Speakers; Councillor Emma Monkman, Ecofeminist and Environmenal Enthusiast and Judith Orchard an experienced and dedicated Bee Keeper were both informative and entertaining. We appreciate them giving up their time to join us today. It was good to welcome Trustees from DFWI, Chrissie Booth, Rosie Fisher, Diane McHarg, Viv Rhodes and Linda Singleton were all present at some time during the day. We thank members of the Allotment Group, led by Peter Holt, for making us so welcome and talking to us about working on the allotments.

14 September 2021 - Nordic Walking Derbyshire
Eight Nordic Walkers joined Izzy today for Team Tuesday's circular route from Curbar Gap, past the Wellington Monument, where Ollie posed beautifully, and the Eagle Stone emerging from the mist. After a rather wet start, the rain eased off as we got back to the cars but everyone was glad to head home to get some dry clothes and a hot drink.

12 September 2021 - 'Baslow Better Together'
Baslow WI members supported this community event by baking and serving cakes with tea and coffee from the Pavillion at Baslow Sports Field. It was good to see so many WI members there and the young families from the village and it's various community groups enjoying their day out. There was quite a party feeling about the day celebrating the end of the lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic. 🥳
9 September 2021 - Anything planned for Sunday 12 September?
This event is open to members of Baslow's community groups as well as residents of Baslow. See you there! 🥳
8 September - WI Monthly Meeting - We are going back home!
Our first Monthly Meeting since the start of the coronavirus pandemic was very well attended in Baslow Village Hall. It was so good to be back to 'normal'! We had a fabulous speaker, Jackie Roboinson telling us about the history and the present at the David Nieper factory and shop. We had a busy Bring & Buy table. The Sunflower Competition was won by Julia F, Janette L, Vikki W and Christine T. Scroll down on this page and you will see some of the photos we have received earlier in the summer of the wonderful sunflowers that have been grown. We were given news of the amazing Great Big Green Wednesday that has been organised by our Climate Ambassadors. We look forward to our next meeting and so much more inbetween with walks, the Village 'Baslow Better Together' party etc.
At the end of the WI meeting today Baslow members had an interesting talk from Emily about the charity, 'Action Tutoring'. Some of our members expressed an interest. An email from Emily and this flyer will be forwarded to them in the next couple of days.

4 September - Remembering our Welcome Back Vintage Tea...
The Team at Baslow WI have received some wonderful messages of thanks following the Welcome Back Tea on 11 August. We have made a 'Possitivity Page' for our Elizabeth Bell Challenge Competition entry at the end of the year. Anne R published this in the Parish Magazine. Many thanks to you all and for offers of help at similar events going forward.
3 September - Book Lover's Book Review
Our August book choice for August was Cakes and Ale by Somerset Maugham. We all really enjoyed the book and had a very lively discussion about it. Part of the discussion was about the great novelist Edward Druffield's unlikely first wife Rosie her promiscuity and the attitudes of people around her. The views and expectations of men about women of that time are witty and funny. Cakes and Ale is a satire of the London literary society between the wars. The narrator Willie Ashenden is a writer and accepts the ruthlessly competitive nature of the literary world, rivalries, petty jealousies and friendships are the order of the day.
Published in 1930, Cakes and Ale or A Skeleton in the Cupboard is book definitely worth reading or rereading for those who have read it in the past. Sandra Marshall |

Our Roving Reporter, Jane, was at Froggatt Show seen here with her daughter's display bee hive. The Queen Bee has a little white mark on her body so that she can easily be identified, it is harmless to her. You can see how busy the worker bees are. There are 1,000 bees in the display box, after the show they were returned to their home hive in Ashford-in-the-Water.

5 August 2021 - Baslow Bookworms & Book Lovers
Baslow Bookworms met, in a member's garden today. This is Judith's report from the meeting:
The plot is based on a modern take of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, although most of our group had difficulty in making the connection. Kate Battista is the unmarried 29 year old daughter of Dr Louis Battista, an eccentric scientist working at the John Hopkins University. She dropped out of college and after the death of her mother, keeps house for her father and her younger (still at school) sister, Bunny. Kate works as a disillusioned, and frequently in trouble, pre-school assistant. She is bright, acerbic, and frustrated. She realises that she has very few opportunities to change her life and to advance herself. Dr Battista's lab assistant, Pyotr, will shortly have to leave the country as his student visa is about to expire. The good Dr is anxious not to loose his assistant and so concocts a plan to marry him off to Kate. At first Kate is enraged and refuses to go along with the plan, but she gradually sees how this could work to her advantage and both she and Pyotr go along with the suggestion. The book provoked a discussion amongst the group about arranged marriages. Not our favourite Anne Tyler book but quite well written. We will meet again on the 2nd September and discuss this month’s read, 'All the light we cannot see' by Anthony Doerr. Judith Barton |
Baslow WI have two book clubs, Bookworms and Book Lovers. If you are a Baslow WI member and are interested in joining one of the clubs contact us via the website or email: [email protected] and we will put you in touch with the leaders.
