He completed in just over 11 hours and was awarded a silver medal coming 90th out of a field of over 300. Proud granny! Interestingly because of the terrain the competitors were allowed to use walking poles. As you can see from the pictures Luke took my Nordic walking poles and said he wouldn’t have managed the hills without them. So just thought if any of the walking group would like to apply for next year - I have the details! Luke is now working towards the 100mile!!!!!!!! I have told him running is for dogs and horses!' |

There is a lovely story behind this photo:
Ann Mc, Judith Coker & Sue Conner went to Harrogate for a 'girls day out'. Whilst browsing in a department store Ann saw this lovely donkey and said how she loved donkeys but didn't think she'd ever have one. Ann thought nothing more of the conversation but on her 50th birthday Judith gave her the donkey they had seen in Harrogate! It turned out that Judith went back the day after their shopping trip to buy it and saved it for Ann's big day. What a great friend and a great loss when she died last year.

A fallen tree with fungus growing in amazing shapes.
One member has certainly thought outside the box with this screenshot!
It will not surprise any of us that Darling Jane, our Roving Reporter, has thought outside the box this month and sent us a photo of this wonderful tree made for her by her son as a birthday present using scrap metal cable. Jane says 'This is one tree that I don't have to prune!'
Pallets and parts of an old shed reused to conceal a water tank which stores water from rainwater butts around the house - By Anna & Andy
Liz Mc has been keeping herself busy lately repurposing sheets I no longer need and making cot and crib sheets for Baby Basics, Sheffield. They are very busy at the moment supplying baby and young children’s clothing, bedding, toys and equipment for refugees from Afghanistan.

Lorna has a great recyling programme going on...
A drawer full of reusable containers. They will all be used to fill the freezer with fruit, soups and spaghetti sauce. When empty they will all be used again and again.

Many of our members have been using and reusing their Tupperware food storeage boxes for many years. Some of this collection is over 50 years old. Looking good too!
'The wooden “pegs” were added to the oxen yoke to make a large coat hanger. Normally it’s on overload!' says Jane W
The next four photos were taken by Sandra J at Dunelm and The National Trust's Hardwick Hall where the buyers for the shops are working hard to choose items made from recycled or sustainable materials.
Some of our members living in NE Derbyshire recycle their cardboard, cans and bottles altogether in their burgundy bins. Papers go in a bag on top and all this is collected fortnightly. Green bins are for garden and kitchen waste also collected fortnightly. An excellent service from the council.💚♻️
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY!
Sandra J says...
'This piece of furniture started it’s life as a pine chest of drawers in my grandparent’s bedroom in Lancashire in the 1920s. In the 1950s it was painted pastel shades by my mother and moved to my bedroom. In the 1960s it was painted white and had an extended top added to create a desk, where I did all my homework through the 1970s. In the 1980s it moved to my first home in Derbyshire, without the desk extension. It was stripped back to bare wood and the two lower drawers were removed and made into a double cupboard. Some old chapel pews were used to make a base and top then the newly created “Welsh dresser” was stained and varnished in a very dark oak colour, popular at the time. In the 2010s it was stripped again and painted in the Farrow and Ball shade it now enjoys. In 2021 it moved to North Yorkshire to my daughter’s house, where my grandchildren’s art materials and games are stored, linking them to their great, great grandparents a hundred years before.'

HEDGEHOG HOUSE:
10 September - Janette says... 'I was so surprised when a Facebook friend I friended in lockdown made this hedgehog house for me. Another friend we both know bought it to our house yesterday. He makes these, not sure of his prices but will ask. It will be on the table at the GBGW (22 September) with the notice board around it. All recycled materials, wood pallets and lead roof. Love the sign on it. All I need now is a hedgehog ! Oh and straw!'

Vikki get's this month's Photo Club started for us with these two fabulous photos of sunflowers in her garden perfect for the 'Yellow' topic. It looks as if she could have a prize winner for our Sunflower Competition being judged at the September meeting.
The last two photos to be added to this month's set were sent to us by Carole who lives locally but is not a WI member, yet! She says... 'The Calver weir walk is one of my favourite walks.' Baslow WI members love walking along those banks too. We hope to welcome Carole as a visitor at our WI some time.
