20 - 27 May 2023 - Baslow Bikers visit Portugal
Just four of the Baslow Bikers managed to get away on holiday together this year. In six days they cycled 180 miles from west to east on the Algarve from Cape St Vincent to Vila Real de Santo Antonio. They enjoyed good weather approximately 22c each day, perfect for cycling. Some of the tracks were very rough which slowed them down and they looked forward to some smooth tarmac to push on for the lunch/beer stops! This was a fun holiday with good hotels and excellent evening meals in local restaurants. Where will they be off to next? 🌎🚲
20 May 2023 - Picnic at the Community Orchard 💚🍎🍏
Our Roving Reporter, Jane has sent this photo taken of her with WI members Anne and Judith at the Community Orchard Picnic today. Fabulous weather was requested and received!
17 May 2023 - WI Walk & Lunch Club...
Today 10 Baslow WI members met Ann at St Anne's Church for a 3½ mile walk out of Baslow, across the fields and up to Bank Wood above Hassop. The bluebells were at their best today and it was beautiful up there with fantastic clear views over Baslow and Chatsworth in one direction and Calver in the other. The walkers arrived at The Prince of Wales at 12.45 and met other members just in time to buy a drink and be served their pre-ordered, delicious meals at 1pm. Twenty WI members were well looked after by Clare and Iva, managers at The Prince of Wales, our thanks go to them. We'll be back!

16 May 2023 - Team Tuesday...
Baslow WI members joined Izzy's Nordic Walking Derbyshire, Team Tuesday Group today for a 4-mile plus walk around the Holmesfield area. They enjoyed the wonderful spring weather and the wild flowers, especially bluebells along the way. Thanks Izzy, great walk! Some of the walkers were tempted to go into 'The Angel' for a little drinkie and something to eat following the walk! 🍻
12 May 2023 - A big thank you from Ann...
Joint Secretary Ann, thanks Baslow WI for the lovely flowers given to her yesterday as she celebrated being a member in Baslow for 40 years.
11 May 2023 - Iris says... 'The rocket is ready!' 💚
The Annual Meeting started with our President, Judith, presenting a cheque for £1,400 to Ian MacDonaldson from Edale Mountain Rescue. This has been raised during the last year by WI members via a coffee morning at Judith's home and raffles throughout the year. The Treasurer's Report and The Team's Report for the year were agreed by the members and Judith gave an excellent address to the members talking about volunteering and giving her thanks to the Team, Helpers and members for all they do. Judith was re-elected as President for the fourth year with a Team of 8 supporting her. We are pleased to welcome a new Team Member, Sue and very sad to lose Caroline, Jane and Lorna. They will be missed greatly we thank them for their help during recent years.
The NFWI Resolution regarding Clean Rivers was presented by Janette, and members voted in favour of the resolution. Julia updated us with news from our Link WI in New Zealand. (Check out the separate page on this website.) Our members donated very generously to the Elm Foundation and also, this month, to Chesterfield Food Bank, this was in lieu of a Coronation Tea Party! It was our time to share. The meeting ended with a 'Going back in time' PowerPoint presentation by one of our secretaries, Ann. This covered the time from 2013 up to the start of the Pandemic. Lovely memories, some sad, remembering the WI friends we have lost. It's incredible all that we do, long may it continue!

8 May 2023 - Look who was invited to the Abbey...Janette's husband, Paul Lobley was invited to the Coronation of King Charles on Saturday 6 May. Today he was interviewed on BBC East Midlands Today about being a part of such a memorable service in Westminster Abbey and about his 40 years of service volunteering in the community. Well done Paul and very well deserved too.

6 May 2023 - Coronation Day
Our Web Editor took the easy option, no tents/umbrellas on The Mall for her, she was in the comfort of her own chair and clicked away throughout the coronation choosing this as her favourite balcony shot. What a day it's been, truly British in every way.
Our Roving Reporter says: 'King Charles and Queen Camilla ready to serve this country to the best of their ability. To cherish the people, the land and the environment.'

4 May 2023 - Baslow Bookworms
The Bookworms had a good discussion today about this month's read, 'Lessons in Chemistry' by Bonnie Garmus, everyone enjoyed the book. It was one of those books you can’t put down! Next month they are meeting on 8 June, a week later than usual, due to holiday commitments. Their next book for discussion will be 'Oh William!' by Elizabeth Strout.

3 May 2023 - Caroline's temporary home...
Our Joint Secretary, Caroline, left Baslow WI at the end of April, a very sad loss for us at WI. She is staying at a holiday lodge until her new home is ready. She has been having quite a few visitors, here she is centre photo with her sister and niece. They seem to be enjoying the hot tub! Don't blame them... 🥂
2 May 2023 - Team Tuesday Nordic Walkers
A small group of Nordic Walkers, joined by canine friends Ollie and Merlot, met today for a figure of eight route over the moors from Curbar Gap. It felt quite chilly at first but some of the uphill climbs soon warmed everyone up.

1 May 2023 - Action @ the allotment!💚 🧑🏻🌾💚
Our Climate Ambassador at Baslow WI, Janette, has been busy on her new allotment on this Bank Holiday Monday. She has planted broad beans and lettuce. She's started doing some digging, guessing there is a lot to be done! It's going to be hard work but worth it when she is harvesting her crops. She says she has more to plant in the coming weeks. We will look forward to following her progress.

1 May 2023 - Bye bye April, see you next year!
This slide has been posted on all Baslow WI social media today. On their own birthdays members will receive a personal birthday email sent from all friends at WI.
29 April 2023 - New in the house at Chatsworth this year...
The exhibition theme this year is Mirror Mirror, 'Reflections on design at Chatsworth'
New in Chatsworth House this season are the Ducal Coronets worn by the then Duke & Duchess of Devonshire to the Coronation of both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.
This year there is some interesting, artistic seating showing amazing skills using a variety of materials. Not necessarily comfortable but good to look at! Imagine the hours that went into these creations.
Also new this year, new and very modern glass and silver art...
27 April 2023 - County Quiz
This evening Baslow WI hosted one of the DFWI County Quiz venues in Baslow Village Hall. Eighteen teams were expected but sadly three dropped out. The hall was still very crowded and the atmosphere was buzzing! Lorna was our Question Reader and kept the questions flowing brilliantly. Congratulations to Fairfield WI, the winning Team in Baslow and also in the County. Thanks to the Baslow Team, Janet, Kate, Valerie and Vikki for representing us and to all the members who helped set up the hall, serve refreshments and manage the scoring, not an easy task!
26 April 2023 - WISA
We welcomed two new members at WISA this afternoon, Kath and Rachael.
Three of our members went out litter picking on the Village Green and the car park this afternoon as a kick-off for our effort supporting King Charles's Coronation Big Help Out. Other members are volunteering to litter pick during the Coronation Bank Holiday Weekend. In today's WISA we enjoyed social time, doing crafts or just chatting and enjoying each other's company with some tea and biscuits! |
25 April 2023 - Nordic Walking
Team Tuesday Nordic Walkers met at Curbar Gap in glorious sunshine for a walk along the Edges, past the Eagle Stone and through the Highland cattle, which fortunately didn't seem in the least bit interested in the passers by.

Today four Baslow Bikers met at Grassmoor, cycled along the 5 Pits Trail to Tibshelf where they joined the Silverhill Trail to Rowthorne then on through Hardwick and back to Grassmoor via Astwith. A very pleasant 20-mile ride. They enjoyed a pub lunch at The Elm Tree, Heath before saying goodbye until they meet again! 🚴♀️

Five Baslow WI members met Marion and Daisy Dog at Curbar Church this morning for a 5 mile walk along the river to Froggatt, through the woods and back along the other side of the river. 19 April 2023 - WI Lunch Club 🏴
Today 43 Baslow WI members celebrated St George's Day, a few days early, by holding their monthly Lunch Club in Baslow Village Hall. The dress code was 'Red & White' and almost everyone observed it. One even had an England rugby shirt on, well done Alison!
'Jo's Pantry' cooked and served the food for us and as always it was a fabulous meal. A proper English meal beautifully cooked and served, most people chose the roast beef with all the traditional trimmings followed by crumble. Our thanks go to Jo and her team, all the members who helped decorate the hall, set the tables, serve the drinks, wash up and clear the hall. A grand effort and a great idea put forward originally by our President, Judith. We were pleased to welcome home our dear friend and member who has been away for four months on the P&O World Cruise. She's been missed.

18 April 2023 - Nordic Walking
Today Team Tuesday walked along a gorgeous route away from traffic, most of the way, to Curbar over fields and back into Baslow along the side of the River Derwent. A fabulous walk in the sunshine with two lovely, well behaved dogs, Merlot and Ollie.
Two Team members were walking, at the same time, but on the gorgeous Amalfi Coast in Italy. Lucky girls! 🕶🌞
12 April 2023 - Today at Baslow WI...
Today Baslow WI members welcomed Hayley Scott from The Forensic Experience to their meeting to talk about the processes behind crime scene investigation, sharing stories from her time working on the Met. Lots of information and facts and now 50 Darlings know how to get away with murder! Link to ‘The Forensic Experience’...

11 April 2023 - WI free seeds, alive and growing well...
Iris is having early success with some of the free seeds she took from WI last month. She is growing rocket leaves named 'Firework' for her salads later this year. 💚🌿💚
10 April 2023 - Last port of call for our World Cruiser, Cadiz
Today our friends on the World Cruise have visited their last port before docking in Southampton. They are in the beautiful Spanish city of Cadiz and have visited The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez and also the very famous Gonzalez Byass factory. The original! Our friend will have loved this day as she has dedicated her life to working with horses and also enjoys the odd glass of Jerez too! Much like our Editor!
7 April 2023 - It's Good Friday & Arcadia is in Malta
Our friend, Baslow WI Team Member, has arrived safely back in the Mediterranean and is in Malta today, it is the penultimate port of call for this her 2nd World Cruise. Today she has been on a island tour and enjoyed the sights in Valetta on Good Friday.
5 April 2023 - A new allotment... 💚
Our WI Climate Ambassador, Janette, has just taken over a new allotment. She is thrilled with it and looking forward to starting work on it. We will be watching for the fruit, vegetables and flowers that she will be growing in the coming seasons. Get digging Darling and keep the photos coming as you make the changes. 🥦🥕
4 April 2023 - Nordic Walking
Team Tuesday met at Stoney Middleton this morning for a six mile Nordic Walk around to Calver and Baslow. Glad to say that the mud is starting to dry up a little. So many lovely flowers appearing along the footpaths now too.

2 & 3 April 2023 - Another birthday on board Arcadia & the transit of the Suez Canal...
During the last few days our fellow member on P&O's Arcadia World Cruise has been approaching the Suez Canal, enjoying the coast of Egypt on the way and another birthday dinner too! The transit of the canal has been interesting for the passengers, joining the convoy of ships and being able to see the land and roads on both sides. Sometimes the passengers get off the ship and go to the Valley of the Kings but our friend hasn't mentioned this as being an option. We will have to ask her when she returns! 🚢
28 March 2023 - Friends of Chatsworth Garden Visit
Today a group of Baslow WI members and a friend met at the coffee kiosk in the car park of Chatsworth House at 10.30am and walked around the gardens. The weather was cold and wet. The members found the new seats in the garden and as you will see our photographer found it difficult to get them to all look in the same direction to get the photo taken! It appears that Darling Jane, our Roving Reporter, was the only one who wanted to get her photo taken! The phrase 'like herding cats' springs to mind! More than half of the group went along for a coffeee in the cafe whilst three and a big wet brown dog went for a walk around the perimeter of the gardens before heading off home. Fingers crossed our April walk will be warmer and drier! It has been rumoured we might go into the house that day! All will be revealed in time! Watch the WI diary for all meeting information.

22 March 2023 - WISA
WI members attended their Social Afternoon in the Village Hall today and were pleased to welcome Diana, a visitor and possible new member. Some went outside onto the Village Green at the request of Roving Reporter, 'Darling Jane', for a photograph with the daffodils, all now in bloom and the perfect sign that spring has sprung here in Baslow. Jane was one of the local people involved in the planting of the bulbs many years ago.

17 March 2023 - She's ashore in Malaysia today! 🇲🇾
Today our intrepid traveller in Penang, Malaysia. She says... 'My tower trip was called the Komtar Tower in Penang I went up 68 floors, the views all around were fantastic even walking on a glass floor looking straight down! We then went on to the houses and shops on stilts into the sea. This has been the most tiring and hottest day, everyone was exhausted! I was so tired I skipped dinner and went to bed. We are at sea now after 3 consecutive excursion days. Doing another ukulele concert on Tuesday so practicing. Will be on land in Muscat on the 24th so will report back then.'

15January 2023 - Today it's Singapore for our member on board the World Cruise 🇸🇬
Today our world traveller has reported being in Singapore. She has been into the gardens and one of the flower towers which are lit up at night. She's also packed in a short river cruise and then to the top of the sky tower with fanstastic views over the city. We suspect she is going back on board for her Singapore Sling rather than going to Raffles, all this sightseeing is wonderful but very exhausting! 🍹
15 January 2023 - WI Lunch Club
Today is the third Wednesday in the month so that means it's Lunch Club for our WI members. Today a small group of nine met at The Peacock, Owler Bar. They were seated in a separate area just off the main dining room and looked after very well. New members please do come along next time, it's a great opportunity to meet and chat with members away from the buzz of our monthly meetings. Next month, Lunch Club will be in Baslow Village Hall celebrating St George's day on 19 April with a truly British menu. 🏴
Our President, Judith is the organiser that day.

13 March 2023 - Blanc & Blanc Occasions Fashion Show
After months of preparation at last we could say 'tonight's the night'! We had sold 78 tickets and looked forward to welcoming friends and members from all over Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. We are pleased to say that this evening we raised £269 for Ashgate Hospice, one of our local charities this year. We thank Anne-Marie from Blanc & Blanc Occasions for bringing her fabulous Spring/Summer collection for us to see. The models this evening were some from Baslow WI and some are part of Anne-Marie's team at the shop. They all did a great job thanks to you all. Thanks also go to Baslow WI members who helped with the selling of tickets, setting up the hall, serving refreshments and tidying up. It was a lot of hard work but worth it for the funds we raised and the fun we had! Many of us got some excellent bargains and we hope to follow it up with visits to the shop on Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield.

11 March 2023 - News from P&O Arcadia in Thailand ⚓️🛳
Our dear friend and fellow WI member was sad when she learned that Arcadia was unable to dock in Hong Kong. She has however reported a very enjoyable time in Thailand visiting an elephant sanctuary in the jungle and the moving to Bangkok for a visit to the incredibly breathtaking temples. Here are just some of the photos she has sent to her WhatsApp group...
8 March 2023 - WI Monthly Meeting
Today's meeting was well attended considering the threatened snow! We had two visitors one who is definitely going to join us. Rob our speaker gave us an excellent talk about his visit to North Korea, interesting but not a relaxing holiday, more an experience! As always our members did us proud with their donations for the Elm Foundation. Next on our agenda is our Blanc Fashion Show. All 80 tickets are sold see you there friends!
6 March 2023 - Keeping up with Arcadia isn't easy!
However, our web editor is giving it a go... 🕶🛳⚓️
The last time we heard from our friend and fellow WI member, a passenger on P&O Arcadia's World Cruise, she was in Airlie Beach, Australia. Since then she has visited one more port in Australia, Cairns. This was followed by four sea days to Bitung, Indonesia on 2 March, Puerto Princesa, Philippines on 4 March then another sea day to Manila, Philippines today! After this there will three seadays before reaching Bangkok.
Julia says: '... photos on 4 March. Five of us hired a taxi and we toured the beaches and countryside plus a canoe in river mangrove where there were monkeys and snakes in the trees... 6 March a cultural tour in old Manila. Back to ship very tired temperature has been over 30 degrees and humid.'

Today our 'Darling' on board P&O's Arcadia has reported having a super day ashore from Airlie Beach, Australia, with crocodiles, koalas, snakes and wonderful countryside!
23 February 2023 - Visit to Hopton Hall, Carsington...
Today seven Baslow WI members and Paul, Janette's husband, met at Hopton Hall for the 'Snowdrop Walk'. The route around the garden was beautifully signposted and underfoot was safe and dry even though there has been plenty of rain recently. The walk took about an hour with many photo stops and chats about the various plants growing and the way they had been cut back or not! After the tour of the gardens we all met again at the Miners Arms, Carsington for drinks and a very good pub lunch. An excellent day out, where next I wonder? Members from Ambergate WI were there at the same time, it was so strange as the last time we were out we met up with Barlow WI!
Thanks to Janette who organised this visit for us.

22 February 2023 - WISA
Our WI Social Afternoon (WISA) was well attended yesterday and it was very warm and cosy in the Committee Room. We have moved WISA from the Village Hall main room into the Committee Room as it is cheaper to rent and cheaper to heat too! Aren't we green? 💚
Lots of tea and cofee was consumed along with the creamy biscuits. Gill entertained us all, as usual, with her stories and we loved her wartime knitting pattern book that she is working from at the moment! |
22 February 2023 - Brisbane, Australia

15 February 2023 - Where in the world...
Good news today from our friend on the P&O Arcadia World Cruise. Following a period of extreme weather conditions, many sea days and days in port she has managed to get off the ship for three hours in Tauranga, New Zealand, on a tour. This photo has been shared with her WhatsApp Group and shows the fabulous sunset leaving Tauranga and heading for Australia. Hopefully she will find better weather there!

Everyone enjoyed their lunch and thought it was extremely good value and excellent service too! It was good to meet up with some members from Barlow WI who were also out for lunch together!

13 February 2023 - News from the World Cruise
Not such good news today from our friend on Arcadia's World Cruise. Due to bad weather the ship has been docked in Auckland for three days and passengers have not been allowed ashore. Masks have to be worn on the ship due to COVID restrictions. The next port of call is Touranga on The Bay of Plenty, two tours have been planned there. Following that they will be heading towards Australia in search of some good weather and calm seas.

10 February 2023 - News from our friend on the World Cruise
Our friend and Baslow WI member on P&O Arcadia has been quite quiet for a good few days. We have just heard though that all is well aboard. She has enjoyed a lovely tour in Samoa, travelling through villages, visiting an enormous waterfall and a remarkable cathedral. Sadly she reports that due to Cyclone Gabrielle Arcadia's visit to Fiji is cancelled, they will have an extra day in Aukland. We look forward to receiving some more photos when she next has some wifi.

Ann and Cate joined Marion on her circular walk from Stoney Middleton Recreation Ground on this cold but very bright winter morning. They stopped for a flask on the high ground overlooking the villages of Stoney Middleton and Eyam and returned to the cars along a very bumpy track populated by sheep no humans to be seen! This was a perfect morning for a walk. Thanks Marion. 😎🐑

Today's walk took Team Tuesday out of Baslow into Edensor, up over Chatsworth Park joining the bridleway down to Calton Lees and back through the Park, past the caravan park through the Kissing Gate and back into Baslow. A lovely walk, approximately 6 miles in bright sunshine. Thanks Izzy our Nordic Walking Instructor and Nordic Walking Derbyshire.

1 February 2023 - Report from Baslow Book Lovers, a WI book club...
Book Lovers meet at 10.30 on the first Wednesday of each month.
We met on Wednesday 1st February to discuss our January read 'Lessons in Chemistry' by Bonnie Garmus We all agreed, it is an excellent book, a laugh out loud insight into the stereotypical issues faced by women during the 50s and 60s. An inspirational story about a woman who defies the odds to achieve something amazing. Sandra Marshall |
1 February 2023 - Happy birthday to our 'Darlings' with February birthdays...

31 January 2023 - Chatsworth Walk.
Throughout the year Baslow WI members and Friends of Chatsworth meet for a garden walk on the last Tuesday of each month. The gardens at Chatsworth House are closed until March so today thirteen walkers met in the car park for a very pleasant stroll along the River Derwent to the Garden Centre at Calton Lees for a morning coffee. It was a bright sunny morning with a very strong breeze blowing the leaves across the park at about 40 mph! The walkers were all wrapped up wearing strong boots and enjoyed the walk and chatter! Luckily they all managed to avoid being blown over. It was good to welcome DFWI WI Adviser, Diane, to our walking group this morning she sent the photo of Ann & Lorna below.

The Baslow Bikers enjoyed a 15 mile circular cycle from The Hardwick Inn, via Silverhill, Teversall, Brierley Forest Park and Rowthorne. It was lovely morning for ride in the winter sun, as you can see from the photos they were well wrapped up against the cold wind. They soon warmed up at the Inn where they met up with two more Baslow Bikers, Melvin and Valerie, all of them enjoyed drinks and a hot lunch.
Members and friends with ebikes please join us for future rides. They will be advertised on the Diary Page of this website.

28 January 2023 - Spending winnings!
Janette won the December Derbyshire Federation Monthly Draw and decided to spend the money on a sketching day at Chatsworth. Here are the results. It looks as though a nice lunch was included in the cost of the course. Well done Janette. Other members, remember the saying 'You've got to be in it, to win it!'
28 January 2023 - Baslow Village Hall, celebrates Village Halls Week
with a Saturday Open Morning.
This morning in Baslow Village Hall, Ann and Judith were promoting the WI in Baslow and further afield in our beautifully refurbished Village Hall. Coffee, tea and fabulous cakes were served, one made by our President, Judith. Delicious! It was a good opportunity for members from various groups in Baslow to chat together and encourage membership. We wish the Village Hall Committee all the best for the coming year and look forward to supporting them at other events. |
25 January 2023 - WISA, is it really only one month since Christmas?
Christine ran a workshop for members and friends today at WISA, this time they were learning to knit gloves. Christine had handed out patterns at the last WI meeting and some members had got their gloves started, and were grateful of help from Christine when it got to the tricky bit, the fingers!
Kate being one of our very experiences knitters has already completed a pair of gloves for her granddaughter and has kindly sent a photo for us to use on this page. Lorna also started a glove before todayand got on well during WISA. She said ' I’ve knitted the thumb gusset and the thumb. It’s such a relief to know my gusset is in the right place!' Well done to all who gave it a go. Everyone who attended this social afternoon was not knitting, some were doing their own thing, catching up with friends and others were having a computer session. Plenty of tea and coffee was consumed, as always! Thanks to Christine for a great WISA, she wasn't 100% fit so we all wish her well and thanks for turning out for us. Get well soon 'Darling'. 🌸 |
24 January 2023 - Team Tuesday Nordic Walkers
Team Tuesday with K9s Merlot and Ollie enjoyed a wonderful and very different walk today, from Thornbridge Hall, Ashford-in-the-Water, out towards Bakewell and back using the Monsal Trail, bridleways and footpaths. This walk included very little roadwork and was extremely peaceful even thought here was plenty of chat along the way! Team Tuesday was pleased to welcome a new walker, Louise. Most of the walkers enjoyed hot drinks at the Thornbridge Cafe, Quakers. A lovely morning thanks to Izzy our Nordic Walking Instructor who has a brain loaded with delightful walks suitable for the various groups she leads.
23 January 2023 - Q. Where in the world, today?
Today our friend and WI member, on the P&O World Cruise, is at The Salt Lakes, Manzanilla, Brazil.

Two years ago today our dear friend Judith, a dedicated member of the WI and supporter of many charities, died. We have not forgotten her. 🌸
21 January 2023 - Our friend on the World Cruise is in Huatulco, Mexico today...
P&O Arcadia has docked in Mexico and our 'Darling' has joined a sea catamaran trip. She tells us...
This whole area is a National Park, it's very clean and the waters around are pure. This is their winter time so it's not very green and no flowers. There are many tiny beaches, pelicans and frigate birds all busy fishing! It's over 35c. Going for lunch now then for a sit in the shade. 😎

Two friends meet for a pre-dinner drink at the end of a sea day on Arcadia. Great to see them back together, obviously thoroughly enjoying themselves.
18 January 2023 - It's the Panama Canal today! 🌞
Our friend and Baslow WI member, on the world cruise, is transiting the Panama Canal today from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean. Anyone who has done this will know what a long process it is but absolutely fascinating with information coming through from The Bridge. The temperature was 27c in the morning and up to 40c on the deck in the afternoon, way too hot, she needs shade and air conditioning. Unlike Derbyshire today! ⛄️
17 January 2023 - Team Tuesday Nordic Walk
Today's walk from The National Trust, Longshaw Estate, was fabulous, it was like being on top of the world, high above the villages of Baslow and Curbar and looking towards Sheffield. There were a few walkers out and just one mountain biker otherwise we were only sharing the moors with the very docile Highland Cattle! The clear sky was beautfiully blue, and the scenery was fabulous. However, the walking was treacherous! The tracks and puddles were frozen and our poles were only helpful in the longer grass. We certainly knew we were alive! Thanks Izzy for leading us on a great 3½ mile walk. Lovely to get back to coffee or soup!
16 January 2023 - WI walk...
Twelve Baslow WI members and two friends, Alison and Rachel, met at Linacre Reservoirs for a mulled wine or coffee and some nibbles before setting off on the walk around the reservoirs. We started off in dry cold weather, experienced a decent amount of snow on the south side of the reservoirs and ended up with a tiny little bit of sunshine. Lorna joined us for lunch at The Peacock Inn, Cutthorpe where we were served beautifully with lovely food in generous portions! Thanks to the staff who looked after us so well. We will be back. That's a promise or is it a threat!

11 January 2023 - At Baslow WI today Edale Mountain Rescue ...
At today's meeting we were pleased to welcome Ian MacDonaldson from Edale Mountain Rescue as our speaker. Baslow members were keen to know more about the Mountain Rescue as it is our President's Charity this year and we have been working hard to raise funds for the cause. Ian gave an excellent presentation and was thanked by Lorna. Vikki, our Treasurer, gave us a report on WI finances and encouraged members to help at the proposed autumn Jumble Sale. Members were asked to vote for a local charity to which money, collected at teatime over a period of six months, will be paid. Ashgate Hospice came out as the winner. Very well deserved as it serves our members and their families very well and sadly all too often. This meeting was enjoyed by a crowded Baslow Village Hall and members participated at Social Time telling tales of their 999 calls. It was an excellent meeting and a great start to the new WI year. Thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and the members for their support.
3 January 2023 - She's off on her travels, better luck this time 'Darling'...
One of our members has left home again for a World Cruise. She is on the
P & O Arcadia, sailing from Southampton to the first port of call on 12 January, Freeport, Bahamas. In 2019 our Darling's World Cruise was severely affected by COVID so we wish her and all her fellow passengers better luck this time. Our Editor will be tracking her journey and when photos are available will be posting them on this website and our Facebook page. We wish all aboard Arcadia a safe and very happy trip. ⚓️ |

Pleasure being with friends and eating the fabulous homecooked cakes by Kate and Judith and mince pies brought to us by Jane! Thanks to all the members who attended and helped today. They enjoyed some delicious soup and cake at The Angel at the end of their walk and went home to return to normal chores and no doubt preparation for Christmas and all things associated with it. Happy days! Great to be out and about chatting with friends in the wonderful Derbyshire countryside, even in the mud! 🎒🥾

Baslow WI members met in the Village Hall today for their usual 4th Wednesday WISA (WI Social Afternoon). A small sub-team made up of Alison, Caroline, Jane, Judith and Kate set about decorating Baslow Village Hall for Christmas. They've done a brilliant job, beautifully coordinated with the new colour scheme in the hall. Well done Darlings! Other Baslow members settled down to their normal WISA activities, crafts, computers and coffees as if nothing was happening around them! 'Carry on Regardless' springs to mind!

Today we have heard that Colin Jenkins, Sandra's husband, has died. Messages of sympathy and support have been sent to Sandra on behalf of us all at Baslow WI.
Colin's funeral will be held on 14 December, 1.30pm at Chesterfield Crematorium and afterwards at Ringwood Hall Hotel, S43 1DQ. Please message Sandra if you are attending so she can inform the hotel. We hope to welcome Sandra back to WI and to the walking group when she feels ready to join in again. Our thoughts are with her and her family at this sad time. |
21 November 2022 - ACWW Supporters Meeting at Derbyshire House
Today approximately 50 WI members were welcomed by Sam Hall & our new DFWI Chair, Anne Belamy, to the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Supporters Day at Derbyshire House. They enjoyed presentations by new and old friendly faces including Sue Watkins, former DFWI ACWW Representative & Margaret Broom Chair of Northern Ireland WIs. They were served a wonderful lunch of soup, and fruit by the ACWW Team and ended the day with non-alcoholic punch and hot mince pies. The hall was decorated for Christmas with a lovely tree and stalls selling cards, scarves and knitted items for the charity. It was a good day, a chance to catch-up with friends from all around our Federation it was ended with 'The Red Heads Panto', a take on 'Goldilocks & the Three Bears'! Sadly some of the regular ACWW Team were not present due to the dreaded COVID. We wish them well soon. Members are taking reports of changes within ACWW back to their WIs and decisions will need to be made as to how to move forward in the light of these changes. We hope to be together again in the Spring.

17 November 2022 - We wonder who the 'new girl' will be!
At Baslow WI we were very sad to hear the news that Liz Mangle, our WI Adviser, has left the Membership Support Team at Derbyshire Federation of WIs.
We will miss Liz as our Adviser but not as a friend to our WI, and of course she is still one of the Baslow Bikers! We look forward to seeing her at some of our future WI meetings and around the WI Facebook pages! DFWI will inform us in the New Year who our new WI Adviser will be. We wish both Liz and Pauline, who also retired today all the very best for the future. 🍀 |

11 November 2022 - Baslow Bikers 🚴♀️
Six Baslow Bikers met today for a 15 mile cycle from Liz & Paul's home. Liz planned an excellent ride on roads and dry tracks, amazing after all the recent rain! The route took them from Clowne, through Elmton and Holbeck to Cresswell where they stopped for coffee then continued on back to The Angel at Clowne for a long drink and a good pub lunch. The villages on the route were beautifully decorated with poppies and bunting. Good to see! 🍁🌺

10 November 2022 - Baslow Bookworms a Baslow WI book club...
The Bookworms met today at Judith’s home and discussed last month's book, 'The Man Who Died Twice' by Richard Osman.
The majority of the group enjoyed the humour and descriptions of the characters who they remembered from reading the first book in the series. One member found the storyline a little too much like a farce which spoilt her enjoyment. Our next book to read is: 'Who Your Friends Are' by Susan Day. Lorna Image - WoB |
9 November 2022 - Preparations for Remembrance Sunday in St Anne's Church, Baslow
Poppies have been made by church and WI members and their friends and are being arranged beautifully by a small team of volunteers including Baslow Darling Jenny!

5 November 2022 - Repair Cafe in Baslow 💚
WI member and former President, Christine, volunteers at St Anne's Church Repair Cafe. Anna went along today with two pairs of her husband's jeans which needed knee patches. Christine came to the rescue! Sadly her machine wouldn’t sew through the very thick denim Anna had bought to do the repair but she cut patches and pinned them ready for Anna to hand sew. Great reusing, good work to all the Green Greenies! 💚

Twenty five Baslow members enjoyed the Soup & Sweet Lunch today raising £250 for Edale Mountain Rescue, our President's Charity this year. Three types of soup were on offer, mushroom, ministrone and tomato & basil. These were followed by an awesome choice of homemade desserts, tea/coffee and After Eights. Delicious! Next time be sure to get your name down quickly! Thanks to all the members who provided the food, helped in the kitchen and hall or came along and enjoyed the afternoon. It was a great way to boost our charity donation and enjoy some social time together. Special thanks to Janet who organised a raffle at very short notice to boost the fundraising.

12 October 2022 - Today at Baslow WI...
Philip Wright gave us a great talk on scissors, and brought an amazing display for us to look at, and ask quesitons about. Our Show & Tell 'Interesting Implements' got members digging deep into their cupboards and out came some fantastic heirlooms! All the news and information was delivered swiftly by our Vice President, Lorna in Judith's absence and we finished exactly at 4pm as planned.
8 October 2022 - Apple Day in Baslow 🍏🍂🍎
What a gorgeous autumn day in Baslow for The Community Orchard 10th Anniversary Apple Day! The Darlings, with partners helping, set up the Pink Gazebo which came out looking like new after being packed away for more than three years due to COVID. It was a busy day, we thank all our members who helped or donated items for sale and for all the members of the community and the Orchard Group who supported out sales tables.

6 October 2022 - 🍁🐿🍂 Autumn Federation Meeting
Baslow WI members enjoyed their visit to Buxton today for the Autumn Federation Meeting. The speakers, Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason and Tracy Daszkiewicz were both excellent but the sound system in the Pavilion Gardens was not! Members enjoyed visiting the stands and sale areas and some ventured out of the building at lunch time too. Many of us were sad to see Chrissie, Our Federation Chair say goodbye. She will now be concentrating her efforts on her position as a Trustee and Vice Chair at NFWI. Our next Federation Meeting will be in March when we return to Derby.
4 October 2022 - Let's go Team Tuesday!
Today's walk started with confusion! Team Tuesday met at Millthorpe, as planned, but realised that acorns were raining down from the trees onto the cars like sharp little pebbles! A decision was made by our intrepid instructor, Izzy, and everyone moved up the hill to Holmesfield to begin the 4 mile walk around lanes, fields, bridleways and footpaths. The walkers met up with Baslow WI's Julia as they passed her home close to the car park so enjoyed a little catch-up chat. This was a lovely walk in perfect walking weather. Some of the group enjoyed lunch after the walk at The Royal Oak, Millthorpe - avoiding the acorns! 🐿

22 September 2022 - New in Baslow...💚♻️
It's here, at last, in Baslow Car Park, our WI Platinum Jubilee Picnic Bench. Today, Councillor Sue Hobson officially “opened” Baslow WI's Jubilee Picnic Bench. Made from over 2,000 recycled plastic milk containers, the picnic table has a guaranteed life of 25 years and is maintenance free. Grateful thanks to Councillor Sue Hobson who directed us towards the Queens Platinum Jubilee Grant, to Derbyshire Dales District Council for granting permission to site our Jubilee Picnic Table in Baslow Car Park, to the Clean & Green Team for the installation and to the many fund raising activities that Baslow WI Members organised as our financial contribution. A real team effort, we hope you like it!

Today's Team Tuesday Nordic Walk was from Peak Village, Rowsley. After a climb up to walk through Copy Wood, the route then crossed the top of Rowsley Bar road, before several styles led across the lower part of Beeley Moor. The return path came through the woods across Smeltingmill Brook. Some of the group enjoyed a wander around the shops and cafes of Peak Village before heading home. It was good to meet Sarah, a new member of the group for this excellent morning walk. Thanks as always to Izzy our Nordic Walking instructor.

Some of the Baslow Bikers enjoyed a 26 mile cycle from Grassmoor to Tibshelf, looping around Silverhill then on to Rowthorne, stopping for a picnic lunch at The Hardwick Ponds and returning to the cars via Astwith. This route uses the 5 Pits and Silverhill Trails so it is mainly off road. This photo, taken at Silverhill, shows Ann, Paul & Liz with the commemorative statue of a miner entitled 'Testing for Gas' unveiled in 2005 on one of the highest spots in Nottinghamshire. The Baslow Bikers have ridden around these areas a number of times and always enjoy it. 🚴♀️🚴♂️
16 September - Chatsworth today
Some of our members were visiting Chatsworth with their partners today. The season is starting to change now. 🍁

Today's meeting was extremely busy and well supported. We welcomed some visitors, including Liz our (off duty) WI Adviser and one new member. It was good to have Paul Leonard back as our speaker with a second talk that had us all enthralled. Members signed up for our 103rd birthday lunch, bought tickets for the Blanc Occasions Fashion Show in aid of Associated Women of the World and volunteered to help at other fund raisers we have planned. Plenty going on! Check the diary on this website to keep up to speed! After our speaker and before our News/Information session we had a few moment silence to remember Queen Elizabeth who died on 8 September 2022.

11 September 2022 - Baslow WI on Facebook
It has not been a quick job getting 8,000 page likes on our Facebook page. It seems that the algorithm has changed and our 'likes' have started creeping up again after a long period where we saw little movement. We have 8,500+ followers! Thank you if you are one of them. We'd love more Baslow members to join in the fun on the page. We try to cover WI and community news with some sport as well as our usual regular morning 7am, night 10.30pm and Photo Club 8am posts. Ask us if you need help getting on the page or take a look by clicking the f in the box at the top of this page.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth II
1926 - 2022
We are truly saddened by the news of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family. She was a loyal and dedicated member of the WI for 80 years, and never failed to show her support for us throughout her time as Queen. We thank her for her dedication, service and fellowship. Many of our members have fond memories of her and will treasure these for years to come.

A sad day for people all over the world, many who will not remember a time without her on the throne. Our thoughts are with the royal family. 23 August 2022 - Team Tuesday venture out with no leader!
Whilst the usual leaders are away, four intrepid Team Tuesday Nordic Walkers set off from Hassop Station, armed with a map, for a circular walk via Great Longstone. Covering previously unchartered territory they had an interesting walk through a field of maize, managed to circumvent a herd of cows, negotiated several styles and only once had a short diversion through a rather boggy wood before finding themselves back on the home stretch of the Monsal Trail.

10 August 2022 - Heather Walk
Only four WI members walked today mainly because of the very hot weather we are experiencing here in Derbyshire. The heat didn't stop them but it did slow them down! They stopped for water frequently and found some lovely shade at the side of Mother Cap for their picnic lunch. The walk was four miles but seemed longer due to the rocky ground and a few steep climbs. They left the cars at Longshaw main car park, walked past the pond, crossed the road and headed for Surprise Corner. Then the steep climb up taking in fabulous views to Mother Cap and back down into Longshaw via a different path. This walk will be repeated at some time in the future but the heather will not be as good once we get into September. The scent was wonderful and the bees were loving it!
9 August 2022 - Nordic Walking
Two WI members, Lorna and Sandra, did a Nordic Walk from Chatsworth today, starting early to avoid the heat. They saw the two new sculptures, the fabulous mermaid and the wooden one to be burned at the end if the exhibition (unless the grass stays as dry as it is now).

We were thrilled to see so many people at WISA today. A few of us were out and about taking photos for the DFWI Virtual Scavenger Hunt competition we are entering. Others enjoyed tea and chat in the Village Hall. This photo shows the brand new picnic table that Councillor Sue Hobson at Derbyshire Dales District Council arranged a grant towards and the council sited it for us in Baslow Village Hall car park. Thanks to all involved. We will be having an official opening of the table (!) when Sue can join us for a photo.

Today 17 Baslow WI members met for coffee before enjoying a fun filled art session with Amanda Bee. The subject was a 'Quirky Cow' and as you will see by the photos, they were extremely 'quirky'! Amanda is an amazing teacher, encouraging freestyle painting but giving guidance on the scale of the work without using rulers. This was 1hr 30mins of total concentration, forgetting the worries of the outside world. A great way to spend a morning with WI friends. Only a few stayed for a picninc lunch in the Village Hall but it was a good sociable time. Thanks go to Amanda and Carol her friend and assistant. 🎨🖌

8 June 2022 - WI Monthly Meeting
Today at Baslow WI, due to ill health, we had a change to our programme, Stuart Barton (our President's husband) was our speaker with his talk, 'Sir's in a strop' - Tales of a country headteacher, he certainly had us laughing with his stories of the children and parents he has had to deal with over the years. This was a busy meeting with a few visitors and one who is hoping to join in the autumn. Many of the members wore red/white/blue to follow on the Queen's Platinum Jubilee theme. Our sales table was busy, the donations to the Elm Foundation were very generous as always. Worryingly though, lots of blister packs from medication were filling Lorna's sack for recyling in Buxton... Thank goodness for our GPs keeping us supplied and mainly well.
