News from our community & WI members from
October 2015 - September 2016
30 September 2016 - Baslow Bikers
Three Baslow Bikers met today at Tibshelf and rode on The Phoenix Greenways for some easy off road cycling. Stopping for coffee at Brierley Forest Park and a picnic further along the trails just before the rain came down! The trails are in perfect condition for bikes, horses or walking and surround meadows, woodland and ponds where formerly there were coal mines and railway tracks. A great way to spend time with WI friends.

28 September 2016 - WISA
After clearing the hall and kitchen following our fundraising lunch quite a few Baslow WI members stayed on for the usual 4th Wednesday WISA (WI Social Afternoon). As always they enjoyed chatting over their craft work and computer projects enjoying a cup of tea/coffee and a quiet time for a couple our hours. WISA is always a great time to meet old friends and new people.
Christine and Jane's craft work above, do these two ever sit totally still?
28 September 2016 - Fundraising at Baslow WI
25 September 2016 - Julia's Denman visit
This was an excellent trip to Denman 'History Cruise on the Thames'. We filled a 96 seater double decker coach for the trip to Tower Pier with commentary from lecturer, Peter Lawrence, as we passed places of interest entering London. Then boarded a 400 seater boat which we had to ourselves, so plenty of room to move around, with covered area to get away from inclement weather. We were lucky, the weather was great apart from one short heavy squall. Very interesting and knowledgeable commentary from Peter as we went down river to beyond the Thames Barrier, passing so many wellknown landmarks which all look so different from the river. On the return we went further up river to beyond Battersea Bridge and we were extremely lucky to see Tower Bridge raised to allow a barge to pass through. Good packed lunches were provided by Denman. There were 12 – 15 men among the participants which helped to swell the numbers – and increase the income.
One day courses like this starting on a Sunday evening with dinner and then a lecture are a brilliant way of filling bedrooms on a Sunday night, participants then vacate rooms Monday morning, leaving early by coach, so not getting in the way of students arriving on Monday. A few more similar events are planned, including a twilight cruise which should be magical with so many of the fantastic buildings lit up. Julia

An amazing amount of awesome cakes, biscuits and scones were delivered including three huge trays donated by a local bakery. Every single thing was sold and nearly £500 taken. We love supporting Ashgate Hospice, it is very local to Baslow and has helped many of our members and their families. As you can see by the photos even though they were busy they still had time for lots of fun and laughter.

17 June 2016 - Women of Steel, Sheffield
Two Baslow WI members, Ann and Lorna attended the unveiling of the Women of Steel statue in Barkers Pool, Sheffield today. The statue, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings, is a wonderful reminder to us all of the brave women who worked in hard and dangerous conditions in the steel industry in Sheffield during World War II whilst their men were away fighting. Ann and Lorna were interviewed by Rony Robinson from Radio Sheffield and also met the Assay Master who showed them one of the silver medals made at the Assay Office and which were given to the 102 Women of Steel present and the 306 families representing other women unable to be there.

11 June 2016 - NFWI Annual Meeting
Melanie from Chatsworth WI was our delegate at the Annual Meeting this year in Brighton. Both resolutions were passed by a large majority they were relating to:
(i) Care of people with dementia in NHS hospitals.
(ii) Food waste.

8 June 2016 - WI Monthly Meeting
Vivienne Milburn made a great WI speaker this afternoon. She told us about her work as an independent antiques valuer and auctioneer. She incorporated a mini quiz into her slides about changing fashion in the antiques world and our Assistant Treasurer, Valerie, was the winner. As is becoming normal for Baslow WI we had a fantastic collection for the Chesterfield Women's Refuge. Lorna will deliver this later this week. We were spoiled at tea time with cake, biscuits and all sorts of yummies! We were pleased to welcome visitors to our WI for this very popular meeting.
|
2 June 2016 - Baslow Bikers
Four Baslow Bikers met for a cycle around Carsington Water and Hopton. They started with a 'wee drop' of sherry and a lemon cake, cycled for an hour or so and stopped for a picnic lunch! They ended the ride back at the car park with a map consultation session planning a future ride. A great day out, more talking and eating than cycling with perfect weather, good company and with lots to look forward too later this year! Maybe more friends will join us another time. Everyone is very welcome.

This Bank Holiday Weekend Lesley, one of our members at Baslow WI, is exhibiting her beautiful art and embroidery work at her studio which is open to visitors as part of the Derbyshire Open Arts weekend. Everyone enjoyed it so much they are already talking about where to go next year!
20 May 2016 - Industrial Heritage Walk
Sue Ayres was our walk leader today and Judy Bennison told us the history of the sites as we went around. We enjoyed our lunch break at Meringue Bakery & Cafe before continuing the walk back to the car park. Judy has sent us this report:
'During our "Industrial Heritage" walk we explored the area of Brampton that was such an industrial powerhouse in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Standing in a pleasant, green space in the sunshine it was hard to imagine being surrounded by potteries, clay pits, brickworks and collieries. We heard about Brampton stoneware that was produced by the 10 potteries in this small area and also about the way that the potteries worked together in an association that bought in bulk, agreed prices and fixed rates of pay. At the end of the walk we saw some photographs of typical pots, which many of us recognised/remembered and I showed the ladies an old pot bottle or jar that I dug up from my garden in Barlow!' Judy

18 May 2016 - Lunch Club
17 May 2016 - Membership at Baslow WI!
Rumours have been going around that the membership list at Baslow WI has closed... Please read this message from our Correspondence Secretary :
'The membership list is NOT closed at Baslow WI, we still have places for anyone who wants to join regardless of where they live. There seems to be an idea going around that we have a big increase in the number of members. This is not true, we have the same numbers as we had last year and it is not at the highest level ever. The membership changes, it can't always stay the same. As ladies move, pass away, move to other WIs or just decide not to renew their membership, familiar faces disappear and the WI moves on.' Lorna. |
13-16 May 2016 - Baslow Bikers
Baslow Bikers joined with some of the Monday riders from Go Cycling DDDC for a weekend away. Bridget organised the house rental and three great cycle rides for us. They cycled approximately 60 miles during the weekend and had an enormous amount of fun.
11 May 2016 - WI Monthly Meeting
We began our May meeting with the talk and video presentation by Janet Hiles representing Mercy Ships. We were all shocked at some of the suffering we saw and also absolutely taken aback by the generosity of the staff on the ship who pay their own travel expenses and work for no salary just very basis accommodation and food.
Kate our President took us through the WI News and Information and then we moved onto the discussion regarding the resolutions to be voted on at the NFWI Annual Meeting in Brighton on 11 June. Kate used the PowerPoint presentation from the NFWI website and it helped greatly in the understanding of the two resolutions: Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia - Baslow WI voted against the resolution. Avoid food waste, address food poverty - Baslow WI voted for this resolution. Our members also voted to give our delegate discretion in the case of an alteration to either resolutions on the day of the Annual Meeting. After tea/coffee/cake and biscuits we resumed the meeting. A draw for a £200 bursary at Denman was won by Judith Coker. The raffle was drawn and we finished with 5 minutes of fun when Lorna told us how to bath a cat and clean the loo at the same time! As usual our members great generosity showed with their donations for the Chesterfield Women's Refuge. This month the theme was cleaning products - although it should be noted that other items are always welcome, except clothes. |
9 May 2016 - Baslow Bikers on the Monsal Trail
Baslow Bikers joined the Monday riders on the Monsal Trail again today but this time it was different - not rain - just gorgeous sunshine and a warm light wind. Fantastic! A small group did the shorter ride to Millers Dale and back and the rest of the riders went to the end of the trail, 14 miles return. Everyone enjoyed the welcoming refreshments served at Hassop Station Cafe along with plenty of chat of course!
|
5 May 2016 - Baslow Bikers on The Five Pits Trail near Chesterfield
Four Baslow Bikers met at 10.30am at St James the Apostle Church, Temple Normanton - what an unusual church! The sun was glorious and we were soon stripping off layers! We survived the 'Adventure Trail' parked our bikes and walked into an amazing bluebell wood, then enjoyed a picnic lunch on high ground with distant views over farmland. We were back at our cars by 2.30pm after an excellent day out! Thanks Muriel for being our leader.
Note: Baslow Bikers are not all WI members - interested? Contact us via this website. |

25 April 2016 - Baslow Bikers go to school!
Baslow Bikers went on their usual Monday ride with Go Cycling Derbyshire Dales on the Monsal Trail and today this was followed by a Bike Maintenance Session led by Ruth Taylor from DDDC. We all learnt a lot and appreciate the help we get from Ruth. Our 'Roving Reporter', Jane, suffered a puncture here is her report...
'It's a long walk back from Cressbrook, especially when you're pushing a bike with a flat tyre! Why would I get a puncture, why me? But I'm a lucky devil! Ruth our DDDC Leader cycled to Hassop and back to bring me an inner tube, not only that, within minutes Ruth had dismantled my bike and replaced the inner tube. Impressed, I was gobsmacked, this girl's a Cycling Dynamo, a Hero!'

14 April 2016 - WI walk for ACWW
Eight Baslow WI walkers met at Little Longstone for a walk on fields and paths around the villages of Ashford in the Water and Great Longstone. They stopped for a coffee en route and ended up at The Packhorse Inn for lunch. £45 was donated to ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) and will be added to Baslow WI's annual 'Pennies for Friendship' collection. The Derbyshire scenery here in the Peak Park is amazing even on this drizzly day.
13 April 2016 - WI monthly meeting
ARKWRIGHT MILL was the subject of Cliff Lea's talk this afternoon at Baslow WI. It was like being back at school in a history lesson, most of us remembered learning about the Industrial Revolution. Cliff was an excellent speaker and encouraged us to visit Cromford Mill which is very local for us.
We welcomed visitors and potential new members today. The Bring & Buy and NFWI Raffle were well supported. Members swapped books and signed up for outings, walks and bike rides. We had a lovely tea with biscuits and chocolate cake and tray bakes. Tickets were on sale for our main fundraiser for our President's Charity, the Air Ambulance. It will be a Soup & Sweet lunch in September. See diary page for details. Members were extremely generous with their donations for Chesterfield Women's Refuge. Lorna, our Correspondence Secretary has a car full of bedding, toiletries etc to deliver tomorrow. Thanks everyone who helps by donating each month. |
11 April 2016 - ACWW, Derbyshire House
Six Baslow WI friends headed off to Derbyshire House, our Federation HQ, for the ACWW Midland Supporters Day to catch up on project news and information about the Triennial Conference this summer. We were updated by Sam, our ACWW rep in Derbyshire, and amazed to hear that Derbyshire WIs raised £5,365 through their Pennies for Friendship collections, £867 from walks and £1,600 through other donations. Volunteers organised sales tables and we were able to purchase fantastic cards, crafts, plants and preserves. Some of or members bought the lovely beaded sunflower broaches. A simple and healthy lunch of soup, and fresh fruit was served to us before the afternoon session with tea and cake to send us on our journey home!
|

It was interesting to see the Chesterfield Marina Development getting well underway - what a transformation! Thanks to Sainsbury's for giving us permission to use their car park and to Muriel for leading the ride.

29 March 2016 - 2nd Facebook birthday for Baslow WI!
Two of our Team Members are administrators of our Facebook page. Since opening the page on 29 March 2014 we have had great fun building it up and learning how it works. We have made friends all over the world as far away as Tasmania with many in Australia, Canada and New Zealand as well all over the UK.
At the time of writing this report we have 1,105 'likes' on our page our target was to be at 1,000 by our 2nd birthday so we have beaten that! Where will we be by our 3rd birthday? If you haven't got your own Facebook page please do consider opening one or just take a look at our page via this website by clicking on the little f at the top of this page. Three of the Baslow WI Communications Group met today for a 2nd year celebration lunch at Fischer's Baslow Hall. It is rapidly becoming an annual event and we love an excuse for a party! |
27 March - Easter
23 March 2016 - WISA
23 March 2016 - Computer workshop for WI members
Seven Baslow members joined Angus for his first WI computer workshop held in Baslow Village Hall. Working with tablets and laptops the members had plenty of questions for their tutor and I am sure went home happy with what they had learnt. Thanks to Lorna for the photo and for Angus giving up his time for us.
|
Report received from Judith - 25 March: Seven WI ladies assembled in Baslow village hall, armed with an assortment of iPads, tablets and laptops to meet Angus, our IT tutor and expert. We hit a snag as soon a Angus began his talk as the broadband router resolutely refused to work and it took half an hour of wire waggling, phone calls to "experts", head scratching and cups of tea, before it finally decided to co-operate and we were able to get started. Angus tried to establish how much each of us knew and what it was we wanted to be able to do and understand . It soon became apparent that we all had different needs and this made the job very difficult for Angus, who showed a great deal of patience as he worked his way through our various mis apprehensions, fear of the unknown and general ignorance about our various devices. We all went away knowing more than when we arrived, feeling more confident in our abilities, and for some of us a few short cuts to functions, all of which should make the IT world seem a little less threatening and a bit more user friendly. Many thanks to Angus.
18 March 2016 - WI visit to Belper's Strutt Houses
Nine of us joined Diane McHarg our leader for a walk around the Strutt Houses at Belper. There is so much to see and learn at Belper we plan to return for the open houses and gardens day later this year. Thanks to Diane for giving up her time to meet with us and lovely to see Janette and Paul from Heage join us today also.

9 March 2016 - WI Monthly Meeting
The Baslow WI Monthly Meeting today was busy and lively. We had an excellent speaker, Mark Johnson 'Ratcatcher'. In his lively and very entertaining talk he told us about his work as a Pest Controller we heard about everything from rats and mice to bed bugs and fleas! Mark's contact phone number is: 07977 519676 if you want a speaker or a pest controller!
We had a lovely Easter themed Bring & Buy Table, book swap, raffle for Air Ambulance and our Treasurers were busy collecting everyone's spending money. Members were very generous with their donations for the Chesterfield Women's Refuge. We started off a collection for the 'Saving Denman Appeal' and as always our donations for refreshments were given to ACWW our international charity for women. What a busy two hours! |

Jane and Liz are former colleagues, now they are both retired and enjoying life in the WI. They are the most regular Baslow Bikers to be seen out on the Monsal Trail on Monday mornings with the 'Go Cycling DDDC' cyclists. This week it was a freezing cold but bright sunny day for them. Well done - keep up the good work you are certainly setting the rest of us an excellent example!

4 - 6 March 2016 - Clean for the Queen
As usual Baslow WI members like to be where the action is. This week it was taking part in the campaign 'Clean for the Queen' in preparation for and celebration of Her Majesty's 90th birthday. Take a look at what some of us got up to. Our editor is hoping for more photos but is concerned that some members are lost under the mountains of rubbish they are collecting and therefore unable to click onto their computers!

6 March 2016 - Mother's Day
5 March 2016
After considerable planning by Christine, our Jumble Sale Chief, everything came together like clockwork despite the threat of snow following quite a fall the yesterday! We had more jumble than ever and made an excellent profit. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who helped in any way, delivering leaflets, collecting, sorting, selling and of course buying jumble! We couldn't do it without you. The money as always will go firstly to the continued running of our WI and will also provide 2 x £200 bursaries for members to attend Denman, the WI college.
1 March 2016
1 March 2016 - Annual Council Meeting
The Winding Wheel was the venue for the DFWI Annual Council Meeting. A full Winding Wheel, Chesterfield was packed with Derbyshire WI members having a wonderful day listening to two excellent speakers; Mandy Hickson an RAF pilot and Judith Hibbert an extraordinary singer/comedienne/entertainer. Members had a great time spending their pocket money at lunch time on the wonderful goodies and craft items for sale. The Denman Dip raised enough for two bursaries and our Denman Ambassador, introduced the new 'Save Denman' appeal. The 2016 Board of Trustee members were introduced. A great day and, as always, heaps to look forward to in the months to come. If you are reading this, are a woman and not a WI member join NOW! You don't know what you are missing!

A great
film and eye opener! Thanks Beeley for organising it and inviting us from Baslow. |
24 February 2016 - WISA
The Baslow WI Social Afternoon was once again a very popular meeting. Taking very little organisation members gather together in Baslow Village Hall bringing with them craft items or computers to work on. Tea, coffee, cake and biscuits are put out to share. Two hours just to chat with old and new friends does us the world of good! Members or visitors are all welcome. WISA is always on the 4th week of the month except December!

19 February 2016 - WI walk
Nine Baslow WI members joined Angela for her walk from Calver around Stoney Middleton to the plague village of Eyam. It is a lovely local walk with interesting history associated with the boundary stone where villagers used to leave money, in vinegar - thought to kill infection, for supplies left outside the village during the plague. This walk was recorded as having 11,000 steps on Valerie's Fitbit bracelet - is that enough to work off the calories eaten at the coffee break?!

17 February 2016 - Baslow WI Lunch Club
Fourteen Baslow WI members met together for their 2nd Lunch Club meeting at the Derwentwater Arms in Calver today. It was good to meet up friends from Go Cycling Derbyshire Dales District Council after the Christmas break.

It was great seeing so many of our newer members out today.
