News from our community & WI members - March 2015
27 March 2015 - Celebrating our 1st year on Facebook
One year ago today Baslow WI set up a Facebook page. The aim of our page is to be a community page, relevant, informative and fun, not purely a WI page. In our first year our posts have over 3,000 'reaches' and our page has 480 followers, or 'likers'! Our Joint Secretaries, Ann and Lorna are administrators on the page with Linda, a DFWI Trustee who has helped throughout the year. Ann and Lorna enjoyed a celebration lunch at Fischer's Baslow Hall and are now looking forward to a 2nd Facebook Year for Baslow WI. Keep commenting, liking, sharing and posting please!
26 March 2015 - Devonshire Group Spring Meeting
Baslow WI members were hosts to the Devonshire Group of Derbyshire WIs for the Autumn Meeting. This was 'A Spanish Evening'.
Baslow Village Hall was decorated in red and yellow with flags and bunting. Naomi Hatch 'Nemmy' brought Flamenco to Baslow with a vengeance and had us up on our feet or dancing on our chairs! Julia led the kitchen team who provided us with a fantastic selection of tapas and Ann, Linda and friends ran around with drinks, sangria, juice, water, tea and coffee. It was a great evening attended by over 60 member from the Devonshire Group. Our Group Corordinator Lorna inspired us to make this a party night rather than a meeting with speaker - well done Lorna. |

18 March 2015 - WI Walk
Linacre Reservoirs was the meeting place for the walking group today. We started with a cup of mulled wine and some sausage rolls made by our dear friends Mr Marks & Mrs Spencer! The walk took us through woods and fields and around the three reservoirs. After a really frosty night the morning was perfect for a walk. Farmers were busy ploughing and volunteers were leisurely cutting back undergrowth enjoying the spring sunshine. It was a good, easy walk followed by lunch at the Three Merry Lads.

21 February 2015 - Baslow WI Annual Jumble Sale
At our Jumble Sale this year we received enormous support from friends and the local community. We raised £864! This money will be used for the running of our WI and for two educational bursaries for members to spend either at Denman College or locally. We would like to thank everyone who helped in any way - it was pretty hectic but certainly worthwhile. Each year we hold a Jumble Sale to fund our WI, other events throughout the year are in support of local charities.
18 February 2015 - Planning a 'Spanish Evening'
Baslow WI is part of the Devonshire Group. The Group is made up of seven Derbyshire WIs; Baslow, Beeley, Chatsworth, Curbar Calver & Froggatt, Eyam, Grindleford and Moorseats. Every year we have two Group Meetings - Spring and Autumn. It is Baslow's turn to host the Spring Group Meeting this year. Today five Team Members got together to plan 'A Spanish Evening' to be held on 26 March at 7.30pm in Baslow Village Hall.
We hope it will be a successful evening and that everyone will have fun at the Flamenco Dancing workshop, tasting tapas and Sangria. |
14 February 2015 - St Valentine's Day
13 February 2015 - Radio Four
It was Friday 13th but not unlucky for Baslow WI. Our President, Kate, and Press Secretary, Jane, were heard on Radio Four's Gardeners Question Time (see our post for 23 January). Kate asked a question about growing the perfect parsnip, hers are known for their very odd shapes! Jane's question was regarding the growing of bluebells (or not as is this case) under the WI oak tree at the entrance to our village. They both came over 'loud and proud' and Jane managed to promote both Baslow WI, Chatsworth and The Duke of Devonshire in a matter of seconds!
|
11 February 2015 - WI Monthly Meeting
Christine Thompson the Vice President of Baslow WI was our speaker this month. She gave a fabulous talk about how she became the Head Seamstress at Chatsworth House. She was also appointed as personal maid to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire wife of Andrew the 11th Duke. We can't wait to hear her speak on that.
The Social Time included members telling their 'Best animal story with a visual aid - not live!' This was great fun and entertaining, lovely to get members talking and laughing together. We were thrilled to welcome a new member - Liz. |

The first meeting of the WI Centenary Year was a great success. We welcomed two new members, Elaine and June. 10 January 2015 - Gift to Baslow WI from friends in New Zealand
5 January 2015 - Val Pickard
Baslow WI members joined Val's family and friends in a celebration of her life at St Anne's Church Baslow today. Val's grandchildren took an active part in the service, the youngest playing the harp. Val was a member of Baslow Flower Circle and that group arranged the beautiful flowers in church.
Remembering Val:
Val has been an active member of Baslow WI since 2008. In 2009 she joined the Team as Assistant Treasurer to Ellie Adams the Treasurer. From 2010 - 2013 she was Treasurer and in 2013 she again became Assistant Treasurer to Vikki Watson and helped with the Drama Group. Val enjoyed many WI activities and outings including the walks - once Vikki had persuaded her it was OK to wear trousers, she was a lady who liked to wear dresses! Val particularly loved her visits to Denman College where she did cooking courses and joined in all of the companionship that the College offers. Even after her cancer had been diagnosed and her terrible fall Val continued to come to meetings in her wheelchair and join in when she could. Baslow members will sorely miss her, particularly her great friend Vikki. Lorna

24 December 2014 - Valerie Pickard
Our dear friend and former WI Treasurer, Val, passed away peacefully today at her home in Baslow her family were with her. We have been informed that Val's funeral will be held at St Anne's Church, Baslow at 12.45pm on Monday 5 January. Friends are asked to wear flower brooches as Val was so keen on flower arranging and a very active member of Baslow Flower Circle. |
24 December 2014 - Facebook
In March this year Baslow WI set up a Facebook page. It has proved to be a great success and we are benefitting from sharing news, information and photographs with WIs and people all over the world. We have followers in Canada, New Zealand and Tasmania to name a just a few further afield and many in Derbyshire and around the UK.
We would love more of our own members to 'like', 'post' and 'share' on the page and hope that this will happen in time. Please take a look at our Facebook page. You can view it directly from this website or visit - www.facebook.com/baslowwi Looking forward to hearing from you! |
17 December 2014 - Christmas walk
Vikki led our Annual Christmas Walk to Chatsworth. We met at Baslow Village Hall for drinks and nibbles and walked through the Kissing Gate into the park and up to Chatsworth House for lunch in The Stables Restaurant. After some retail therapy we wandered back to Baslow wishing each other a wonderful Christmas and looking forward to our next get-together. We were pleased to have three new members with us today, and we haven't scared them off - yet!
16 December 2014 - News from our Kiwi friends
Denise, our contact in Hukanui-Hamua WI, North Island, New Zealand reports:
"We are shearing lambs and ewes at present. Had a fine weekend, so we have dry sheep for today. Hoping to do another day on Wednesday. My husband likes a day in between, so he can take the large mobs of ewes and lambs back to paddocks and bring other ones down to the wool shed without mixing up and mis-mothering any lambs. We have them on the ewes for another 3 weeks, to get back some condition after shearing and then they are weaned! Elaine took a photo of Daisy (actually from the photo I can see it is actually Ernest!) before he went on his final trip! Fantastic prices for beef at present and Ernest earned us over $1500. Very good money for very little work for most of us and grazing and drenching donated by Elaine & her husband Doc." Hukanui-Hamua WI are a very small rural WI and Ernest has been their fund raiser over the past two years. That’s the joy of WI, sharing experience and learning how others manage and survive in their communities worldwide. |

10 December 2014 - Christmas meeting
Baslow WI members gathered together for a festive drink and meal cooked and served by Jo's Pantry. Children from St Anne's School, Baslow, visited us and performed a beautiful selection of Christmas hymns and songs. We enjoyed another visit also ..... from a Christmas Fairy (our very own Gill Watson)! We had a wreath making workshop led by Sam from Fresh Ideas, Chesterfield and we all went home with fantastic wreaths to hang outside during the Christmas period. Just to make the day even more special we welcomed Elaine as our 64th Baslow WI member!

Local historian and retired GP, Dr David Dalrymple-Smith, gave a very interesting talk on the history of Baslow church. Eight members of Baslow WI joined other local people in a walk around the outside of the 12th century building and the ancient church porch before going inside. David gave a vivid account of the people and families whose names appeared on memorials and explained the changes to the church that had happened over the years.

18 July 2014 - Community Orchard Treasure Hunt
Very many thanks to all those in the village who supported our Treasure Hunt on Friday 18th July. Fortunately we avoided the thunderstorms and had a warm, humid evening just perfect for wandering slowly around hunting for clues and then enjoying a superb barbecue, the last because of the sterling efforts of Richard Shipstone and Anne and Malcolm Roper. First prize went to Mike Woffenden's team - although it did have seven members - and we made a small profit to go towards this year's apple day'.

7 - 10 April 2014 - Denman
|
I'm back home from an excellent visit to Denman College. It was very enjoyable, if hard work and I learned a great deal. Denman have the most expert tutors and my course in Silk Shading was no exception. Hazel Everett, our tutor who trained at the Royal School of Needlework, taught us in a very friendly and informal manner. I will post a photo of my finished embroidery of an Iris when it is completed. Progress is slow as it has to be done so exactly.
Denman was very picturesque in the spring sun with the tulips and blossoms colouring the grounds. I'm so glad I attended the course and made new WI friends. Lorna |

19 March 2014 - Inspiring Women Working Together Conference
Kate, Baslow WI's President attended the conference at York Racecourse this is her report to Baslow WI members:
I attended as your representative a day conference held at York racecourse. Why such a prestigious venue? We were over 300 Presidents from WIs as far afield as Kent in the south to Northumberland in the north. Our Hosts were the NFWI Board of Trustees who gave us all a day of inspiration, we were given a series of short presentations on the work they all do, covering every aspect of the WI, the way our finances are used and how the WI enterprises help to raise further revenue on NFWI’s behalf. The importance of our own Denman College was not missed out, an inspirational place not to be missed, offering a wide range of courses and activities. Did you know there are several different bursaries that you can apply for directly from the college?
But on to our centenary year 2015, the baton has left Wales our birthplace to travel around every, yes every, county! The baton arrives in Derbyshire at the end of June for a week; let’s make sure we can be a part of one of these historic changeovers. It arrives in London at the Albert Hall for our annual conference in 2015, links from the conference will allow everyone to see and also be linked in to this milestone day. How are we going to celebrate the 100th birthday of the WI here in Derbyshire? Kate

Baslow Village Hall was filled to capacity for our fund raising event in support of Edale Mountain Rescue, our President's Charity for 2013. Tickets had been sold, tables laid, raffle prizes collected and we were all set for our big night! Amazing pie and peas followed by fruit meringue was cooked, delivered and served by Jo's Pantry assisted by our own WI members acting as waitresses. The meal was followed by an antiques talk in the form of a quiz and 'pretend' bidding by TV personality James Lewis from Bamfords Auction House, Rowsley. James brought various items, some worth very little but others valued at tens of thousands of pounds to talk about. We would like to thank local people and businesses for their help and generous donations to our raffle including; The Duchess of Devonshire, The Cavendish Hotel and Five Little Ducks at the Post Office, Baslow. Profit for the evening is in excess of £700 and altogether this year our President's Charity has made around £1,300. Congratulations to Lorna, her Team and the friends and family of Baslow WI members.

Many thanks to Judith for hosting such a friendly gathering and good luck with future fund raising for your charity.

11 September 2013 - Baslow WI meeting
The speaker on 11 September was a representative from The National Forest. Her PowerPoint presentation was a real eye-opener, most of us didn't know about the work that has been going
on so close by. We will certainly be visiting to find out more and supporting such a worthwhile local enterprise. Jane, our Press Reporter, couldn't let the opportunity pass and told the speaker about our own tree planting experiences! See 90th celebration page of this website.

22 August 2013 - Shakespeare
Eight Baslow WI members joined a Derbyshire WI Federation outing to Stratford-on-Avon to see an outstanding production of 'As You Like It'. The cast were having great fun which contributed to the overall enjoyment of the audience. There was music, some ad libbing and even a small amount of audience participation. At the end of the performance everybody came out happy and smiling. If only young people could be introduced to Shakespeare with such performances, they would be inspired. Of course the Baslow ladies had to have lunch at Carluccio's before the performance! Overall, it was a most enjoyable day with an excellent coach driver. Thanks go to DFWI for organising this for Derbyshire WIs.
28 August 2013 - WI Social Afternoon - WISA
This meeting in Baslow Village Hall was not well attended. Many people were away on holiday and the event had not been entered into our July Newsletter. Apologies go to members who would like to have attended.
7 & 8 August 2013 - Bakewell Show
This year we were blessed with good weather for Bakewell Show. The WI marquee was dressed in green and white using banners and bunting. The "have a go" at rag rugging was popular especially with children. Members from all over the country visited the show, many helped by stewarding and judging cattle and sheep as well as on WI tables. We were pleased to see competition entries from local WIs as well as individual members. Our Baslow WI President entered her fabulous goldwork evening bag. See you there next year - it's a great day out!
5-8 August 2013 - Denman Summer School: Enjoy Oxfordshire

She also had a lunch at Jesus College and spent a morning in the Ashmolean Museum.
Julia told us that the accomodation and food at Denman College was better than ever. Inspiring us all to book a visit!

17 acres of well maintained gardens. Accomodation is all en-suite either in the main house or in purpose built blocks. The college offers students wonderful facilities in which to work including the Computer Room, Cookery and Craft Schools.

We all enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the town before returning home.

Stephanie Roper, "Wardrobe Angel" was our speaker at the July meeting. She inspired us to alter and recycle our clothes rather than throw them away when we have had enough of them. It was a lively meeting with our WI County Chairman, Chrissie Booth, present as well as visitors from other WIs. At monthly meetings we have a sales table, book swap and we advertise outings and walks organised for our members and friends. Never a dull moment!

The money raised will be added to that collected at various events and raffles throughout the year and will be presented to Edale Mountain Rescue at the end of the President's term of office. A representative from Edale Mountain Rescue attended the event, gave a short talk and drew the raffle.
Charity law affects WIs
The WI is a charity and under charity law is only allowed to support other charities that are local and may benefit our members. We are proud to support many local charities whenever we can particularly one so vital as Edale Mountain Rescue.
