Members donated jam, chutney, cake, fruit and vegetables etc and we made a profit of £101.40, £25 of which was donated to the Community Orchard and £76.40 will go to this year's President's Charity; Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport. 25 - 27 September 2015 - Derbyshire Denman Weekend
Five of us from Baslow WI were lucky enough to get places on the Derbyshire Denman Weekend.
Three, Ann, Lorna and Mary were on the "Let's Make Cheese" course with amazing tutor Louise Talbot a dairy farmer originally from New Zealand. We all enjoyed the cheese making experience and came home with a VERY heavy cool box full of our home made dairy produce including, butter, cream cheese, feta, ricotta and mozzarella! It was a busy two days but so enjoyable apart from all the washing up! Thanks Denman and thanks to our wonderful Denman Ambassador, Bernadette for organising it for us.
More news on courses at the DFWI Denman Weekend is expected come back later please!

Report sent by Christine: Having settled into 'Hampshire' my room for the two nights, I went along to the textile studio to meet Marilyn Pipe, our "Ribbon Embroidery" tutor. Twelve of us from all over Derbyshire had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend painting and then stitching our 'Poppy Fields' masterpieces. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend, thanks in no small part to Bernadette who organised it wonderfully.
Report sent by Julia: My fifth visit to Denman, and the best bedroom I have had so far, the 'Wiltshire Room': Walk-in shower, double bed and excellent digital radio. Well done to Wiltshire Federation. I joined 13 other ladies from Derbyshire WIs to discover more about The Royal Palaces of London. We learned about how the whims and lifestyle of different monarchs have influenced the development and layout of London. The course included a full day trip to Hampton Court. The emphasis from our tutor, Peter Lawrence, was on the Tudor period, and following the tour of the Palace we had plenty of time to explore whatever we wanted or just to relax in the sunshine. Peter is a retired Royal Protection Officer and was able to share a few special stories with us. I love going to Denman, it is a great way to meet new friends.
22 September 2015 - Derbyshire Day
The Derbyshire flag was officially adopted on 22 September 2006, now thought of as ‘Derbyshire Day’. The colours represent Derbyshire's green countryside, its rivers and reservoirs. In the centre of the flag is a Tudor rose, which has been the county badge since the 1470s. The rose is gold in colour rather than the more usual red and white to differentiate from the emblems of Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Thanks to Ruth the organiser for making us all so welcome as she always does.

We have called this the '5 Sue Walk' because 5 out of 10 walkers were named Sue! Everyone met at Grindleford Church and enjoyed a leisurely walk to the David Mellor Factory at Hathersage where we met up with Lorna and had lunch. We walked back to Grindleford along the river. The scenery and the weather was fantastic. Before going our separate ways we had a cuppa and made some purchases at the Community Shop at Grindleford Church - what a find! They have some amazing stock in there, including beautiful cards by local photographer, Ian Fretwell.

Ashover WI members were working hard in their tea tent and we enjoyed some amazing goodies purchased from them helping them boost their donation to local charities.

We have heaps to look forward to during the remainder of the summer/autumn and winter 2015. Check out our diary page for full information.
THE HONORARY WASHER UP - (With apologies to Windmills Of Your Mind)
Round like a saucer or a teacup A side plate or a pan He's a-standing by the sink girls Washing up as best he can The cutlery's all soapy and the water he must change Scrape the food from off the dirties and the plates all re-arrange And all that you can find is damp tea towels left behind Mari-igold gloves so pinky And so awkward to pull on The apron drenched with water And the bubbles are all gone Crockery is put away and cutlery in the drawer The kitchen is all tidy and just as it was before And all that you can find is damp tea towels left behind Martin Venning |

Today 5 Baslow Bikers met at Poolsbrook Country Park and cycled to Rother Valley Country Park. Easy cycling, all off road, but horrid weather for July! Never mind we enjoyed the cycle, the company, the picnic and the wine provided by our leader, Muriel. Next time we plan to cycle along the banks of the Chesterfield Canal. Let's hope we don't end up in it! Anything can happen when we get let loose!

Some of us, who are members of the Gym, Cycling, Tennis and Swimming Club, decorated this window. We are not flower arrangers just enthusiastic amateurs. We had lots of fun playing with the flowers and enjoyed the time we spent together doing it. |

Others we saw were Stitchwort (similar to Saxifrage), Water Avons (Apricot hanging bell flowers), Bedstraw (golden strands of small flowers) and huge Verbascum (giant silver hairy plan with soft leaves similar to Foxglove but taller with yellow flowers). We ended up at The Bull's Head where some of us had a pub lunch, others had a picnic along with some of the landlord's finest ale! Join us next time - everyone is welcome. Full details of all our activities are shown on our Diary Page. |
This meeting was attended by over 5,000 WI members. Lorna, one of our secretaries at Baslow WI was a delegate. HM The Queen, opened the meeting accompanied by The Princess Royal and The Countess of Wessex. Singing Jersualem and the National Anthem brought a tear to many eyes.
Speakers were Lucy Worsley, historian, Baroness Grey Thompson, sportswoman and Helena Morrisey CBE, businesswoman and mother of nine! All three women, very different and truly inspiring in their own way.
We were entertained by the Bleadon Belles, the winners of the Singing for Joy choir competition and a fashion show by the Kingston University final year students who have worked in conjunction with WI members on some amazing and quite outrageous designs for both men and women!
This was an incredible day for everyone at the Albert Hall and those watching around the UK via internet links. Thanks go to NFWI for organising the day and DFWI for getting so many of us from Derbyshire to London representing our WIs and the Federation.
