4 December - News from Festivals Committee
Our President, Christine, received a letter from David Dawson, Chairman of Baslow Festivals Committee, thanking her for the help received from Baslow WI members this year. He noted that his committee has raised just over £2,000 for the village funds and £450 for Helen's Trust. The money will fund improvements around the Village Green and a 'Welcome to Baslow' sign will be erected.

Wonderful things about Derbyshire to enjoy this month.....
The Village Show!
The Village Show!
One of the many things I love about moving to Derbyshire is the opportunity to reminisce about growing up in the 1970s and the fantastic village show! We are so lucky that there are wonderful people who dedicate so much time, effort and energy to make these events happen every year. Definitely worth a visit! |
Well Dressing - Another wonderful tradition that is thriving thanks to the efforts of local people and village communities.
July 2018
Well Dressings have taken place in villages all over Derbyshire. A stunning sight in the beautiful early summer of 2018.
History of Well Dressing It is thought the earliest well dressings were a pagan giving of thanks to the water gods. The early Christian Church accepted the practice rather than outlaw it so well dressing had a religious theme. Today some have a religious theme but others have different influences - as seen in a small selection from the area. Derbyshire sits largely on limestone. Limestone is a porous rock and rainfall swiftly runs into the fissures and gaps of the limestone pavement. Therefore villages were sited where there were springs. |
Jams, Pickles and Preserves!
Saturday 6th October is Apple Day at Baslow Orchard!
As fabulous members of Baslow WI I trust you are watering and nurturing your fruit and vegetables during this dry period. On Saturday 6th October Baslow Orchard Group will be hosting Apple Day. Baslow WI will have a stall with produce and items to whet your appetite on the day but also as we head towards our Centenary Year. Watch this space but in the meantime please prepare extra jars for us to sell on the day. Proceeds towards WI Funds and the Baslow Orchard Group. |
If you have not visited Baslow Orchard take a stroll up Over Lane from School Lane and you will see the sign just after the walled field on your left. The Orchard Group organises these events and if you would like to get involved contact Caroline.
Gardens in June
This week I visited the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show twice!
I visited on RHS members day with a friend and on Friday went back for more. Towards the end of the day meeting a WI friend and member Alison for a glass of fizz and some folk music from a Sheffield based duo - Captives on the Carousel.
The Best Show Garden was 'The Great Outdoors' by another Sheffield resident - Phil Hirst. His inspiration for this garden is from the countryside around Sheffield. "A few minutes out of the city is a landscape of sheep grazed meadows, bleak heather moorland and ancient oak and birch woods. Reflections of this countryside have been recreated in this garden". Something we at Baslow WI know, understand and love..... |
Open Gardens
There are a number of gardens open locally to get your flower fix over the next few weeks.
June 2018
There are a number of local events taking place in Baslow during June.
